I have two 1970 Novas that were never undercoated or repainted. Both have Customer Interior and Exterior Decor Package. Both had the gas tank blacked out. This was much like the assembly manual considering assembly line reality.

I have seen many other original Novas but none with the gas tank blackout.

Has anyone else seen other Nova with gas tank black out?

My 69 survivor SS nova has a lot of black on the gas tank, not fully blackened out. It to was never undercoated. Its a late 68 build.

That is it. Just blacked out on the sides and rear? What interior or exterior packages?

Yes, they were just lightly blackened out on the sides and rear area of the tank, going forward to about where the tank bends.. I'm willing to bet this was done at the factory to eliminate any headlight or other light glare at night off the gas tanks because much of the tank is exposed when looking at it from the rear of the car... Just a thought, maybe this is not the reason...

My 69 L78 Nova has a blacked out tank as well, looks to be original as some of it is flaking off

What type of material was used??? I take it that it was just a satin color of black paint used. Can anyone show some pics of what it looks like.I have to drop my tank due to a fuel leak i have on top somewhere.A lot of the black that was there came off from the leak and would like to put it back the way it was.

This was a large area of contention back in '99 +/- at the Nova Nationals..... Very few real world examples of this blackout treatment.

I don't know that I've seen any that I could absolutly say had black paint. I think there were some, and if it was paint, I'd expect it to be a flat/satin laquer. That would explain the paint flaking as the paint wouldn't stick well to the tank. Most I've seen have undercoat, even if the car doesn't. Kinda makes me wonder if there were three phases. Nothing, blk, then undercoat, due to process changes. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

I will try to take some pics of my 69 tank, it definitely has flaking black paint on it (no undercoating on car)and it looks like it fades out towards the front of the tank, also looks like they sprayed it after it was installed as there looks to be black paint blown around the tank itself

My 68 has some black paint on the tank, mostly on the sides but there is a little on the bottom.
