I have a 68 GTO I am currently redoing the interior on. The car still has the original interior. The strange thing is both bucket seats have the release on the passenger side. Is this standard for 68 or a factory mistake? The tracks on the driver seat are correct with the slider control on the outside. I would rather not buy two pairs of seatbacks just to get a pair for this car. I guess I could buy a 66 seat of backs and cut the release holes myself? Also, the driver's armrest has an ashtray in it. Because of this the armrest pad is shorter. Does anyone sell the shorter armrest or is my only route reupholstery?
Thanks,
Jason http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Jason--
Unless the workers were hammered at the Pontiac factory that day, I'd say those aren't original to your car. My '68 did not have such said issues.
So, I'm not 100% clear on what you're doing with the car. Are you having new seat covers put on? Or are you simply buying new seat backs? Essentially, you have two passenger seat back frames on your car at the moment. You just have to find a driver's side seatback frame. I'm pretty sure you can get any GM A-body frame for 68 or 69.
Also, in terns of the driver's armrest, I'm pretty sure the front should not have an ashtray. Only the short, rear pads had the ashtrays in them. They make reproduction pads for both the front and rear and are not expensive at all. However, others can chime in here, but I'm pretty sure you need a set of FRONT armrest bases and pads. Check out Performance Years. They should have everything.
OK, just saw the pad there. That's definitely a rear pad and base on the front driver's side. You definitely need a new base and pad for it.
Nice car. Exactly the same color as my old one except I had a GOLD vinyl top on mine. Even had the Ivy Gold interior without a console. I'd go through Legendary for the reproduction seat covers and armrest pads (they should have the base too). I like their stuff the best.

Thanks for the quick reply! I am sure the interior in the car is original. Both seats had not been messed with, one had a soft trim sheet and the other a IBM punch card. I'm changing the interior to black and do not want to leave dyed panels on the backs of the seats. I put them on for now because the weather is nice and I want to drive the car. Don't make fun of the wrinkles in the seats. It was cold today and they have seen zero "sun time" http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. will post pictures of the armrest with the ashtray. You can see it in the first picture of the original interior.

Yep. That's a rear armrest base and pad. You need a front one.

Hmm, that's right, the rear ones are slanted. I still think that arm rest is not correct. I mean, what is the point of having an ashtray under the driver's arm. It's pretty useless from a design standpoint. Perhaps that armrest was for a 4-door LeMans?
Was your car built at the end of the run in '68? I could see them throwing some odd parts on it just to get the thing built and out the door.
Hell, that's pretty cool then. I'd keep the oddball parts if they're original to the car! Just makes purchasing a little harder. I'd e-mail Legendary and ask them about the pads. They should have a reproduction to fit, I would think.

I can't remember, but isn't that "69" on there a year code?

I want to try to keep the parts original to the car but am not too concerned with it. The car is a GTO clone(Lemans) that came highly optioned: 4 speed, AM/FM, Rear defogger, remote mirror, deluxe belts, rally IIs, rally gauges, disc brakes, tinted glass, ride and handling package, rear speakers, and a few others. Its just too bad they didn't kick the radio and get the GTO option instead. That is why I had no problem changing the exterior and interior to black. It was originally gold on gold. After the car was taken to metal and the body work was done I could not do the gold. Thanks for the input. It may be a 4 door piece. What are the odds that someone would find another gold rest to install though? I think the ashtray on the driver's rest is a great idea. A smoker hangs is cigarette out the window and can put the thing out right there. In fact, there were a few half burnt doobies in there when I got the car; but that is a whole different story. Thanks again,
Jason

Am I correct in assuming the 66 repro backs are the same as the 68 backs but without the button holes cut out?
Thanks,
Jason

The 68 backs are currently made as far as I know. I have a some black 68 interior parts that I'm not using as my car has parchment.'
Also Just dashes recovers the arm rest pads.

Thanks. I know the 68 backs are currently made. The problem is I would have to buy 2 sets of seatbacks to get 2 passenger sides. My question is, are the 66 repro seatbacks the same as the 68 units with the exception that they don't have the release tab hole cut out?
Thanks,
Jason
