View Full Version : '69 Camaro Exhaust Recommendations

I need a new exhaust for my '9 BB Camaro. I'm running headers and am looking for performance and not a restoration exhaust.
The one thing I would like is a crossflow muffler as I find everything else hangs too close to the ground.
Any suggestions?

I went throught this entire drill myself.
I cant talk about Horsepower gains and losses, but I can talk about fit.
I bought the MAGNAFLOW 2 1/2" Mandrel Bent,Stainless, Crossflow, X-pipe, system.
I had problems getting it to fit out of the box, but MAGNAFLOW worked with me.
I can send you misc pics. As I'm still finishing underfloor cleanup and paint, I cant show you finished installed
The MAGNAFLOW system has tailpipes, ala 67/68. I plan on doing a custom welded extension to replicate the 69' style.
PYPES offers a slip on extension to replicate the 69 "Look"
The next alternative is the PYPES system, but I investigated and found the MAGNAFLOW to come with better hangars, better clamps, and better fit
Third alternative is FLOWMASTER. With their single crossmount muffler. The exhaust pipes enter the front side and exit the ends of the muffler.

Do any of these fit with the stock hangers?
Pypes performance exhaust. http://www.pypesexhaust.com/
Have used exhaust systems from this vendor on 70 Nova, 69 Camaro, and so on.
Good fitment, solid work, and great sound.
Maybe a bit work on the center x pipe will even improve ground clearance.
Great value for the buck in my opinion.

This is what I did to my 69 Z, maybe an idea for you.
My car has some old school headers. So we ran 2.5 all the way to a flowmaster crossflow muffler. Then we ran 2.5 from the crossflow to the factory style tail pipes. The entire system was set up with the factory hangers.
It looks very stock, but of course flows much better than one of the resto exhaust system and sounds awesome.
For performance you would of course want to use 2.5 tailpipes.

From experience, the DynoMax or Pypes crossflow muffler will perform better than the Flowmaster crossflow...on our Camaro that we race in Pure Stock [exhaust manifolds], we started with the factory chambered, went to 2.5" mandrel with Flowmaster crossflow & Dr. Gas x-pipe, then to the Pypes 2.5" mandrel with Pypes crossflow & Pypes x-pipe...picked up each time, and shockingly we picked up well over 1mph when we switched from Flowmaster-->Pypes. 2.5" mandrel head pipes are the key, and tail pipe size is last on the list...as long as the tail pipes are mandrel bent you should be fine with 2.25", as the gases have cooled significantly by that point and don't need quite the volume as up front...

I appreciate all the input I have received from everyone.
So far it looks like I can get the best deal on a Flowmaster kit with the Crossflow muffler - $550 Cdn.
I can not find anyone who deals in Pypes here in Canada. I have sent them a message asking whether they have any dealers in the Great White North, but have not hear back yet.
I am going to the Ontario Camaro Show this weekend and will look how some of these systems fit.
There are so many choices and hopefully that will help me decide.

Over the past 10 years or so, I've become a big fan of http://www.torquetechexh.com/ They even sell a 3 1/2 inch system which wraps over the axle and really drarwf's the 3 inch systems that everybody seems to have these days. I've installed a few of these systems and let me tell you, if you got a decent rat motor up front, that 3 1/2 system really thunders!

I spent countless hours researching, buying and then modifying my ou7t of the box system.
I wanted the best fit, best appearing, best hanging, good performance, good sound, (I didnt care about absolute TOP performance) at a good price point.
I found a MAGNAFLOW vendor on the net that had free shipping, NO sales tax.
I had read many threads on Camaros.net and spoke with many people. My conclusion was the below system.

That is one sweet looking exhaust.
That would look so out of place on the unrestored, 40 year old underside of my car.
I know you mentioned that you wanted a cross flow muffler due to clearance, but I run these mufflers on my 67, and i promise you, you'll have great ground clearance because the mufflers are so small. They are flowmaster 1 chamber mufflers and its a 3" setup with an x pipe. I have them dumped at the rear axle because they sound better that way. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif Everytime I drive the car people say man, that sure does sound good, or they'll ask me what the setup is.
