View Full Version : 70 L78 Camaro - Dialing in more originality

A few member have asked what I have been up to lately. So here is the explanation. I pulled the LS6, M22 tranny and exhaust out of the car to make way for the new. The motor is now numbers matching to the car as is the tranny. Headers are gone to make way for exhaust manifolds and smog. Here are a few shots.

From the top.

Looks great! When did you get the numbers matching (VIN matching?) engine for the car? I always thought the TCS was only for automatic cars though.

I believe Darren has a appropriately dated CKO coded engine. It is not the engine, born with his L-78 body.

[/ QUOTE ] Thanks for answering that for me Chuck. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif I'm sure everyone is well aware that it is not the original motor. I am not hiding that fact nor do I care that it is not the "born with" motor.

Ok, I was gonna say how in the heck did you find the original motor. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif So what is that TCS for exactly, I thought it was automatic only but maybe I'm thinking of the anti diesel solenoid. Isn't the L78 also supposed to have that fuel line support bracket that bolts up to that front carb mount stud? Looking good!

That's been a topic of discussion on my car too Bill. My car didn't have the clip on the back of the dual snorkle and the PCV hose has always been routed to the front.

It's been pointed out to me by many 'experts' in the field. I know how it was delivered and I know how it's gonna stay. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

At least that is what the assembly manual calls for. Maybe they stopped using them at some point. They are a PITA and Dennis would have know if he had them the first time he tried to take the air cleaner off.

I never really thought about the TCS setup so what does it really do, pull timing? I know I've seen it on a bunch of LS6 cars but never really noticed it on the L78 cars. The 70 L78 Camaros had a bunch of really strange 1 year only things going on so we still have a lot to learn. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

mockingbird812
06-12-2009, 07:40 AM
Been learning a bit about TCS (Transmission Controlled Spark) with my '70 Nova recently and basically it does not allow vacuum advance of timing in low gears: 1st & 2nd for TH400 and 4 speeds. It is an emissions reducer.

resto4u
06-12-2009, 09:14 AM
TCS= temp. controlled spark. Not transmission controlled spark.

-----In light of that, Sam, would a guy be wise to make the set-up non functional one way or another??? It could easily be done in a way that still appeared as though the set-up was fully functioning. Sort of like gutted smog-pumps.......Bill S

mockingbird812
06-12-2009, 07:20 PM
Hey Bill,

You bet I plan to discretely disconnect this system (haven't figured that out exactly).

I still contend that, altho temperature is an input to the TCS system, the primary input is what gear the transmission is in, therefore TRANSMISSION Controlled Spark. Temperature input is a go, no-go sytem (I think http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif). Vacuum advance is available while car is cold, but once the water temp switch (I don't think it is a sender but rather a switch) says its warmed up, then the vac. advance is cut out (in low gears).

al8apex
06-12-2009, 08:55 PM
The switch on MY 70 Z28 4 speed is a TRANSMISSION Controlled Spark switch, it does not allow any vacuum to the distributor until it is in 4th gear, one of the FIRST things bypassed or thrown away too ...

You can actually re-route the vacumm lines on and around the TCS switch itself, it will continue to look correct and will void out the operation of the switch.

Its pretty much ready. Just a few items to sort out and some fine tuning but it should be roadworthy now. Just need to wait for a break in the rain to get it out on the street. I have video of if running but it is too large for Photobucket. Trying to work around that..

D...if you are using a Win XP(that's what I remember you having)...you should have Windows Movie Maker installed on your system...

Just load the file into it...and output it to a smaller file size (it's pretty self explanatory http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif).

Then you can load it up to Photobucket! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Thanks guys.. The exhaust is a Parts Place system. Probably took about 2 hours to install it. Pretty much fit like a glove. As nice as it would have been, I couldn't really justify a Gardner system. At 1/3 of the cost I am pretty happy with what I have.
