PJ,
If I understand the component you are referring to, i think it ensured a grounding contact between the hood and the cowl when it was closed and helped reduce interference with the radio.

Are you talking about the hood stop bolts that are designed to keep the hood from going through the windshield in a front end accident?
They are about 2 1/2" long and are bolted into the top of the cowl.
Rick
I am talking about the little bracket that look like rabbit ears and are attached in the center top of the firewall and they stick out to touch the hood when it is closed on the chevelle.I will take a pic tonight at the car cruz

Ok, that probably is for the radio equipped cars. It helps ground the hood to the car to help eliminate static.
Pretty sure it's with AM and AM/FM radios as well as cars equipped with 8 tracks.

I checked the AIM, Rick is correct, it is for RPO U63 and U69 (AM and AM/FM radio). Sorry for any confusion PJ. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

BTW The hood ground was used on Novas too. However they only appear on the pre December 1969 cars. Mid year production change eliminated them. There is a Service Bulletin or Service News item on how to deal with customer complaints and what part number to install if needed.
I believe that the screech as the hood opened or closed cause more complaints than the static did.
I researched this a few years ago, I just looked into this again since my BB is an early car this item is on my shopping list.
Greg
Thanks Greg
do you know the mid year date that they were discontinued??
and can you post that bulletin if you have one??
thanks

Peter,
My take on these grounding clips is the same as Greg's. Seem only to show up on early production cars and deleted around the December timeframe. I've got some of those NOS if you need one.

my friends chevelle is an Atlanta built car, built on February 19 1970. This car has all the documents of an original ss and it has the ears. I wonder if the discontinued ears was for all plants???

Peter, Anythings possible, but I rarely see these on cars built in 1970. See quite a few on the early cars built from August to December of 69. I also have the book of 70 TSB's and will have to look through it to see if I have the copy Greg has regarding the service complaint.

This clip was listed as removed from production on February 2. 1970 according to the Tech bulletin 70-T-33, Number XV, Dated June 23, 1970. However December is the latest I have observed on Novas.
My scanner is not hooked up but the part numbers are as follows:
3980183 - Nova
3980141 - Chevelle, Monte Carlo
3980146 - Chevrolet
The recommended screw for Nova, Chevelle, and Monte Carlo is a 10-16 x 1/2" screw similar to 9419305.
So looks like I need a different one than the Chevelle.
Greg
Ok so my friends chevelle built in the Atlanta plant Feb 19 /70 has one then they were still putting them on some cars.
Interesting.
