View Full Version : L78 Engine is back in!

This past week I dropped the engine back into my L78 and got it running yesterday. I'm going in teh opposite direction as Darren, I am taking off the TCS and exhaust manifolds in favor of headers. For cam break-in we installed the original exhaust but left the AIR tubes disconnected. Here are a couple of progress pics, some of you may recognize my friend James in the "muscle" tee shirt. The guy driving the fork lift is my good friend Don, we did the re-install in his home shop.

The engine pulls real strong and the car runs great with a fresh engine and M20 transmission.

There is still some work to do; for some reason the carb will randomly flood out at idle. Some of the wiring needs to be finalized, and yes the vacuum advance tube is "way" too long.

Valves will need a final "hot" adjustment before we leave for the Penticton, BC car show in a couple weeks! The headers won't go on until after that trip.

Sam, SAME weekend as Camaros at Carlisle(PA), the Biggest, Best Camaro show in the country.

I'll be leaving Sea-Tac Wednesday night, the 24th for my eighth consecutive year.

Wish these conflicts didnt have to happen, but there are only so many spring/summer weekends for all these misc shows

Hope to see your posted pics after the event.

Regards,

I finally got my buddy to upload the dyno video from his camera - Here is the L78 just after cam break-in making a pull - 295 RWHP and 323 ft lbs out of a stock rebuild. This is through the stock exhaust and with the rev limiter set to 6 grand.

Nice job, noticed that P/S pulley, what is that off of.? 70 Solid lifter should be an 1105 DD I think. Car looks really unique with SS wheels on it. Were they available as an option for a 70 Camaro.?

Nice. I should throw mine on the dyno to see where I ended up.

I kept saying to people my L78 car felt pretty darn close to my 2000 SS for overall power/speed. My L78 had an unknown cam/piston combo with 71 oval port heads, headers and Holley 750. My 2000 SS with the automatic put down 320 rwhp and I thought the L78 was really close in power, just the L78 felt like a beast compared to how smooth the LS1 is. Sounds good Sam! Get it fine tuned and it probably will be around 310-320 rwhp.

Hey man, that car looks sharp! Nice, seldom seen color, that beautiful RS split bumper front end, small spoiler (it appears), and a solid lifter L-78.....wrap it up, I'll take it!

Jim, those SS wheels were not available on the '70 Camaro SS. It came stock with either a 14 x 7 steel wheel (CL code) or the 14 x 7 re-styled rally wheel (AV code - picture from nastyZ28.com)

http://www.nastyz28.com/faq/wheel/rally.jpg

Since I plan to enjoy the car by driving it, I have bolted on a set of 16x8 Torq thrust wannabees with radial rubber, which is much easier to drive on our rutted and bumpy roads in Washington. (See StrperSS's photo above)

As to the PS pulley, I am running what came on the car. If the 1105 DD is correct, I sure would be in the market for one!

Thanks,
-Sam
