LAST BALDWIN-MOTION PHASE III GT CORVETTE TO DEBUT AT MUSCLE CAR AND CORVETTE NATIONALS!
By Martyn L. Schorr
Purchased from the original owner's family in 2008, Adam Tuckman's 1971 Baldwin-Motion Phase III GT Corvette is believed to be the most highly optioned, documented and original GT built. Between 1969 and 1971, Joel Rosen built just 12 GT's!
On June 3, 1971, Dr. Henry Rollings took delivery of his air conditioned, 500-plus horsepower, 1971 Phase III GT from Joel Rosen at Motion Performance in Baldwin, New York. Power was supplied by a blueprinted and balanced 454 big-block built to LS-7 specifications and fitted with Phase III cam and valve train, open chamber ZL-1 aluminum heads, headers and an 850 cfm Holley 4-barrel. Backing up the potent Phase III engine; A massaged M40 Turbo Hydramatic, Hone overdrive and a 4.88 Posi rear. Creature comforts include a custom interior and stereo system and numerous factory power options.
Dr. Rollings paid his bill, ($16,283.00), hopped into the GT's plush interior and drove home to Savannah, GA! Between 1971 and 1989, the colorful Internist who owned and piloted vintage World War II aircraft, used his Phase III GT for making house calls, towing his Jaguar E-Type SCCA race cars and high speed touring. He put more than 31,000 trouble-free miles on his unique Corvette Supercar. In 1989, he gifted his GT to his daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Don Glasser. Dr. Rollings passed away in 2003.
“Dr. Rollings owned imported exotics, raced sports cars and flew restored Warbirds. Once he took a test ride in a 1970 GT that we had just finished for a customer, he was hooked,” said Joel “Mr. Motion” Rosen. Documented by Joel Rosen for the Glassers in 2003 and again for Adam Tuckman in 2008, it is the most highly optioned Phase III GT built. Other than being repainted in the 1980's, it is the most original GT known.
Dr. Rollings GT is being restored by John Waleck, who restored Joel Rosen's yellow Phase III GT now owned by Dan McMichael. Gary “The Local Brush” Kupfer originally striped and trimmed Dr. Rollings GT in 1971 and will apply the finishing touches to the GT prior to its public debut at the MUSCLE CAR AND CORVETTE NATIONALS in Chicago on November 21-22, 2009.
Special Thanks to Marty Schorr, formerly of Motion Performance and now PMPR, Inc. for writing this article. We are honored to have Mr. Tuckman debut this significant Supercar at the Nickey Chicago Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals. The photo's shown are of the car in as purchased condition in 2008.

which raises the question: "Why?"
Why as in why "restore" something so nice?
They are only original once and once "restored" they lack any trace to originality, it could be ANY car once "restored"
IMHO. YMMV, etc

Very ominous. Like the aerial shots! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif I do concur with Jim's comment now that I appreciate that this car was original except for the repaint. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

i hope i get to meet many of you in person at the event. it will make my wife feel better to know that i dont have so many imaginery friends.
i am very appreciative that the yenko.net site exists and i wouldnt have found the car otherwise.
this is my dream car and the idea of premiering it at the MCACN in the company of so many other radical musclecars is overwhelming.
i have several intentions for the car which why i chose to have it restored. i am happy to discuss further if you wish to contact me.

Thanks Bruce. i hope everyone enjoys it. I feel so lucky to have found it. The family just located the GT's hitch which was used to tow his Jag. Since its Day2 i am going to leave it off but bring it along to the show.

This is an awesome bit of Motion history and we at MCACN are honored to have Mr. Tuckman choose our show as the place to unveil it after restoration.
More Motion history in the making!

The repaint in the 80's was not the original color...
I sure am curious to see how it used to look. Could we see just one vintage pic?

Looks like another example of the owner finding the right car...or did the car actually find the perfect owner?.

As promised, I spoke with a friend who was very into the muscle car scene around the time the DR had the Corvette and he remembered the car. Story goes that the DR wrecked the Corvette raacing it Roebling Road Raceway in Savannah and tore up one whole side. My friend and another guy repaired the car for DR. and at that time he decided to change original Motion color of white and black stripes to hugger orange. According to friend he also installed the hono-drive on car to make more drivable with 4:88 rear gears. I have invited friend to comment on car. He has intimate knowledge of it and always wondered what came of it after DR. died. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

[/ QUOTE ] The factory never installed Hone-Drives in cars so there is no way possible it's on any build sheets but Baldwin could have invoiced it for the Motion work. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbang.gif

I noticed the valve covers have the larger cut down emblems. Does the hood have the larger emblems too? Just asking because i'm trying to figure out a possible time date of when cars got the longer emblems. 71 Z28 small block car with the long emblems cut in chromed (mostly flaking off) ansen valve covers. Anyone have any thoughts on why these might be chromed over the aluminum ? The Vette looks great and sorry for the slight hi-jack on the thread...Jeff

Jeff. The emblems and valve covers are original to car. You are correct, the long emblems were shaved down to fit in the covers.

09-19-2010, 11:21 PM
I believe the valve covers used were different sizes not the emblems. But I could mistaken. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif
No the emblems came in 2 sizes. The earlier ones are longer and were cut down to fit in the valve covers. BTW, awesome car.

Remember, this car will be a part of our Cars of Motion/Baldwin Motion cars Invitational display at the Muscle Car & Corvette Nationals show November 20-21. www.mcacn.com (http://www.mcacn.com)
You will find Marty Schorr and Joel "Mr. Motion" Rosen right next to it both days!
Many thanks to Adam and all of the owners who have made the commitment to be a part of what may be the largest display of real-deal Motion machines ever assmebled under one roof, along with both of the men who put the Motion name on the map.

When I saw this ad in Car Craft Oct 1971 I first thought it was Adams car to the upper left, because of the stripes on the rear fenders. But then I realized there where a lot of differences. Does anyone know if the cars in the ad are Baldwin Motion-, Motion-cars or built by individuals ?
