I have a 66 Biscayne 427/425 Biscayne and would like to know what class it would have been in in 1966. I have had mixed opinions and thought I'd turn to the experts on the SYC.
Thanks in advance,

[b] My Impala used to run SC/C at West Hampton, a NHRA track.

Hello Dog427425,
Thanks for the info and that was a very cool car. So what time/mph did the car run? Did it have any mods? My Biscayne is a real 427/425 that is in stock condition. I am in the process of making it into a "Day 2" look. It was raced back in the day and not a Trailer Queen but in very good condition.
Thanks again,
Dave L.

I'm pretty sure it was factored into NHRA's B/Stock according to it's HP/LBS.

Mark,
That's what several of my friends said.

[b]Dave

It ran in the 12's at over 100 mph, with 4.11's, headers, and some modifications -
it was very competitive for the time ('68 /'69) - check out the win stickers!
(Keystones & chrome reversed, way up high and the undercarriage painted white)

Glenn,
Those were the days. Perfect Day 2 car like so many of us had. I was tearing off original wheels/tires, carbs and intakes the first day I bought the car. Who cared about having an original numbers matching car back in the day! I just wanted to be faster than the next car. How long did you own it and where did you race at?

Most I've seen were in B/S however I've got pictures of Bill Izykoski's car in both B&C/S. This car is one of the best known '66 Biscayne stockers. I also have a picture of one at Aquasco and one at York US 30 and both are classified A/S.

http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=182571 scroll down to the pic of Paul Vitale's 67 Impala SS

This was today at Martin US131 Factory Stock/FAST race. This 427 Impala SS is really moving.......don't forget, manifolds, Polyglas tires, etc.....and it's a 4 speed.

I had it from '68 - '70, it developed a nasty habit of ripping the trailing arms off the bottom of the car which would then cause the trans cross member to tear off the frame. I'd go for the shifter and it would barely be sticking out of the console!
I raced it at Islip and West Hampton, and Connecting Hwy, 150th St & the Conduit and about 100 different lights throughout Nassau County!

Norm Fryer's 007. Bill Izkowski and a local home town favorite was The Pied Piper (Valerio Bros.) with help from Grump, also ran in B/Stick. I think the 427 Fairlanes and Mopars ran in A/Stock back then. Slicks, headers, air bags gauges a Hurst Competition Plus shifter and a super tune (balanced, clearanced with some head, carb and distributor work was about all you did or needed back then. Don't forget the Cragars! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

I've posted these before but ... a buddy owned this L72 4spd coupe back in 84/85 , N50's , glass bumpers , headers and tunnel ram iirc it ran high 12's . It's back in the US now being restored.

My original NHRA class guide shows 8.56 for Stock and 8.66 for Super Stock...I didn't bring any rule books with me to Michigan, so someone with a '66 book handy can chime with what class those factors fall into.

I don't have the NHRA books but here's what I found in the 1969 AHRA Rule Book.

Formula/Showroom Stock Class: B/S B/SA

Hot Rod Division: Single 4 Bbl puts you in Formula 2 and Multiple Carbs/Factory FI/Factory Supercharged bumped you up to Formula 1. The 8.56/8.66 factor puts you in C/HR.

The 1967 AHRA Rule Book shows the following:

Showroom Stock: A/S A/SA

Factory Production: FP/DS

Formula 2 Hot Rod: B/HR

Modified Production: B/MP

Sorry but I don't have a 1966 book.

What is the deal with the crunched car next to yours in the first picture?

Jason,
That is actually Dog427435's car and maybe he can answer your question.

Ok, had a chance to grab my '66 rule book...woulda been in A/Stock (7.00-8.69). I forgot there wasn't a Super/Stock class per se *yet*, so the 8.56 factor would've been the one you'd have used in '66...

That was a mint SS I had sold to a friend of mine - he ran a red light and was tagged on both sides!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif
We flat towed my car to the track with it that day.

My '66 L72 Biscayne was factored "B" stock and ran 13.0's @110 when new at Minnesota Dragways back in the day.

I don't remember ever seeing any '66 L-72 big cars running in "A". If they did fit into there, I don't think they were competetive and the owner would drop to "B" where they were. Like mentioned earlier, Billy Ilykowski's(sic) was probably the most well known one (B) in the country. I tell 'ya, those L-72 cars were absolute terrors. I've heard other stories of these cars ripping out their rear control arms also. Changing subject slightly, now I know people worship '67 435 HP Corvettes like the Shroud of Turin, but if you'd line one up in a race with a '66 427/425 HP Corvette, my money's on the '66 L-72 'Vette!

A '66 Biscayne was a natural 'A' car until the '68 season when it went to 'B', but dropped further to 'C' and then 'D' stock before finally resting at 'B' in '73. Anyway, here's what NHRA showed back in the day, and that natural class(es) each year for a '66 L72 Biscayne...

Original NHRA factor page(s) (http://www.yenko.net/attachments/NHRA_66factors.jpg) - 8.56 [stock] or 8.66 [super/stock]

1965 class breaks (http://www.yenko.net/attachments/65nhra.jpg) - AA/S [note: assuming an early '66 built car during remainder of '65 season, if not in class guide they would weigh the car @ track & divide by advertised HP to determine class]

1966 class breaks (http://www.yenko.net/attachments/66nhra.jpg) - A/S
1967 class breaks (http://www.yenko.net/attachments/67nhra.jpg) - A/S [would've added weight to reach 8.70/hp factor] or SS/C
1968 class breaks (http://www.yenko.net/attachments/68nhra.jpg) - B/S or SS/D
1969 class breaks (http://www.yenko.net/attachments/69nhra.jpg) - C/S or SS/G
1970 class breaks (http://www.yenko.net/attachments/70nhra.jpg) - D/S or SS/F
1971 class breaks (http://www.yenko.net/attachments/71nhra.jpg) - D/S or SS/F
1972 class breaks (http://www.yenko.net/attachments/72nhra.jpg) - A/S [would've added weight to 9.0/hp?] or SS/F
1973 class breaks (http://www.yenko.net/attachments/73nhra.jpg) - B/S or SS/F

Hi Rob,
So if my L72 Biscayne had headers and slicks what class would it have been in back in the 60's?
Thanks,

LOL...it would depend on the year, and whether you're talking Stock or Super/Stock.

Hey Sam: what year did NHRA start allowing you to move down a class? Seems like you were still stuck where you were at in '70, maybe??
