When Building the current engine in my race car I pulled an engine block out of my core bank{bottom shelf of the garageLOL} and after I looked at it I thought it might be worth something more then the average bigblock.A soon as my machine shop guy saw it he said I should sell it and I would have enough money to buy a new Dart block.I had a full rotating assembly and needed an engine NOW,so it got machined .060" over and in the car it went.I figured I would see if I really have something special.Future plans call for a 4.25" crank kit,and I have 2 more 454 blocks sitting around doing nothing,so if this thing is worth something I might just sell it when I finally pull it.

It is a 427 block with the casting # 3869942.The date on the side of the block{none on the rear} is real rough but looks like it ends in 5.THe code on the deck didnt translate into anything in any of the available code books, but if I looked through all the codes and tried to mix and match what means what,it looks like it might be a full size 1966 cop car motor. It's a 2 bolt main with the canister type oil filter and uses the grooved rear cam journal.Does anybody think this is a really sought after piece?

Thanks.

------There are probably a number of 66 Corvette guys that would love to have it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/drool.gif .......Bill S

Can you share the mystery Suffix w/ us?.

And who was it here restoring the '66 State Police Biscayne Post car...wasn't it an L36 car and does it have the original or correct engine?.

I had the block decked,so the code isnt there. It was something like IP IE or something like that. Its still in the car and being raced, but I wondered if this was a real rare piece or not.Thanks.

I don't think it was a IP code, if it was a 2- bolt main block. I don't know what a 390 hp code was but the IP would have been a 4-bolt main block.

Casting applications:

3869942 8 427 1966-1975
3869942 8 396 4 1966-1969
3869942 8 454 1970-1976

as stated above, there are a LOT of Corvette people looking for a block like this (before it was decked and bored) and apparently paying good money too

IMHO AFTER you decked the block is not the time to ask if it is worth anything, as the bore AND decking has diminished its worth

the engine shop guy told you it was BEFORE you did that, I am surprised that he didn't tell you to bring in one of your other blocks ... or talk you out of it UNTIL you found out what it was worth

I would have figured that it was worth less undecked since it had another car's partial VIN on it.It was bored fresh .030" over when I got it,but I had $700 worth of .060 pistons so I went another .030.It has about 130 runs on this bore job which means it shouldnt need to be bored again, but if it did, that wouldnt be a big deal.Another thing was that the block was dropped and the outer starter bolt boss was broken about half way up,and I had it NiRod welded and it looks like nothing ever happened, but since I paid $250 for the block as a damaged piece,it didnt really mean anything to me.I also have 2 sets of date code correct closed chamber heads, and a 6223 crank that is currently in the engine.I would imagine that a corvette guy would want to restamp this engine anyhow.I guess if when I pull it,it is still on one piece{I threw the rods out of both side of my original LS6 engine the last time} I will try and sell it.Thanks,it sounds like I have an interesting piece.

The funny thing was that I bought this block from my old machine shop guy who was retiring. He called me up and told me to come rummage through all his bigblock parts before the recyclers get there. After getting some heads and oil pans and other small things he told me he had some done blocks,a .040 over 400 and a .030 over 396.Turns out he didnt even remember that it was a 427.Both blocks were dropped off there many years ago.I bought both of them, the 427 is in my race car now,and the 400 is awaiting the finishing of my 73 camaro, but it may make a quick stop over under the hood of my 89 Mustang just for fun.Its funny how we find thing when we dont even need them.
