How sad to see some of the cars and trucks that will be sent to the junk pile. I took a few pictures but we have a few hundred in our storage lot and counting. Am I missing something. the syclone is worth way more than 4500 bucks so why would someone trade it in as a clunker?

I saw a few Impala SS's on TV here.
Just like most government programs, this one sux.
And, I thought this was a plan to improve the sales of domestic auto makers, and if so, why are most of the higher sales by foreign automakers?
Great job again, government.

Wow! And most people are getting screwed by paying sticker price on their new car in order to get the $4500 clunker trade in. Another huge waste of taxpayer money. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

Can you get me any more info on the truck? Like the last 4 of the VIN,and if there is any way to salvage any of the rare and unobtainable parts off it before it gets turned into a Hyundai?
What dealer is the syclone at ?

I wish there had been an amendment that would have excluded collectable or high horsepower vehicles from this law. I know the Govt doesn't care about them at all but when the attrition rate has allready claimed hundreds or thousands of these cars and trucks it is a sad thing to thing that more of them get killed off for this failed program... I am sure there are 454SS trucks headed to the back lots right now as well as Buick Grand nationals and more Syclones and Typhoons.....

At a dealership here in KC, somebody traded in a beautiful 87 5.0 Mustang LX convertible with 32,000 original miles. This program is literally making me sick.

I'm not quite ready to wave the BS flag yet, but I am having a hard time believing that people are trading in cars that are obviously worth considerably more than $4500.

Now this is killing me. At a local Ford dealership, a 97 Camaro SS, and 99 Firebird Formula were traded in as clunkers.
Do they get the $4500 on top of the trade in value toward a new vehicle, or is it just the $4500?
CC Rider
08-10-2009, 05:21 AM
I believe they only get $4500. Since the car can't be resold and the engine will be turned into a useless metal block, that's all the (misinformed) owner gets.

I think you are entitles to $3500/$4500 plus the dealers best estimate of the scrap value of the car -$50 administative fee.
It has me wondering, if you could get the $3500/$4500 and then not accept the scap value and get the car back after the engine has been killed?

I am trying to save the Syclone at this time, the paperwork on the GT Mustangs was to far gone and the red one was very nice car. We have started to get checks in and the paperwork flow is much better that in the beginning. Like anything new it takes some time to get it right. Keep in mind this flow of cars will stop very soon due to people that want to buy but cannot get financed as well as the shrinking dealer inventory. If you order a demostic car customer a new car it will take as long as 4 to 8 weeks in normal times but we are not in normal times so it should take alot longer. I see loaded haulers taking cars and trucks out of the storage area daily now and man its sad, the good news it will make the ones that survive worth more just as the cars we collect today have.

[/ QUOTE ]But these people are just going by "trade-in value." The problem is that the average person is not near as knowledgeable on vehicle values and the dealership tells them the vehicle's worth next to nothing so they figure $4500 is way better. Remember there are a LOT of dumb, or should I say uneducated people out there.

In a way this reminds me of the early `80's when we used to see SS396 Chevelles and Z28 Camaros on the local short track and demolition derby circuits on a weekly basis.
As it was then, many today simply don't have any knowledge nor appreciation of America's automotive heritage.

Just for shits and giggles, let me part this truck out:
Seats $200
Center console/shifter/shifter cable $350
Gauge cluster/housing $300
ECM and engine wiring harness $250
Upper/lower intake manifolds with injectors and fuel rail $700
Exhaust manifolds w/turbo $400
IC system $400
Cladding $3000
engine/trans/TC Lets say $500 core prices.condition unknown.
Off the top of my head, not counting S10 body panels,I got $5100 in parts. If it runs good and with 66k it's worth $7500 all day long.

I now have the keys to the Syclone and should get the oK on Monday to get it home. I did get to drive it in the parking lot and it runs, shifts and drives fine but it wants to die in gear but just placing my foot on the gas in gear keeps it going, with or without the AC on. The seats look like new and it really is a solid truck. I would live to find a original black paint door for the because it looks like it still has all factory paint, I will know more when I clean it up. Survivor??

Maserati becomes just another clunker
August 19, 2009
.
In a sad-but-true story, the frustrated owner of a 1985 Maserati BiTurbo recently turned his engine-plagued car into the Cash for Clunkers program.
The program is designed to remove less-fuel-efficient vehicles from the road and spur the economy through car sales. Currently about 800,000 older-model 'gas guzzlers' have been traded in.
Go Subaru in Golden, Col., had quite a surprise, however, when the owner of the Maserati came in to trade the Italian sports car for a new Subaru Impreza. The Maserati was in near-mint condition with all leather, suede and wood trim, and had an odometer reading of only 18,480 miles. It did, however, have an engine problem that made it quit 10 minutes after starting.
The owner had been trying to sell the car for several months, and had not met with any success, so he traded it in for $3,500 credit towards purchase of the Subaru under the Cash for Clunkers program.
Under the terms of the program the Maserati will have to be crushed.
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t114/dog427435/1218%20ashbridge/mase.jpg
I would imagine that the dealer could ignore the paperwork, allow the $3,500 trade in to the customer and keep the car.
All the customer knows is that they received a $3,500 credit. A dealer would have to know this vehicle is worth more than that.

That's no rare Italian sportscar, that's a BiTurbo. In GM terms, its a nicely trimmed '80s Cavalier with the torque steer you'd expect after you put an HO 5.0L V8 into it, plus it has all of the self igniting fire capabilities of an '84 Fiero. That and the reliability of an old British sports car that had been in a flood. Awful cars with no resale value. Regardless of its low miles, it looks like the leading edge of the front fender is rusted through. No tragedy here, and the dealer would be a fool to keep it. JMO....

After all the calls and work the truck is going to the junk yard. The manager doing the paperwork did not call as directed whan the final paperwork was completed so the application was processed with the goverment and approved so no going back now and a very very sad day.. One very big problem with vehicles like the syclone going through the process is the younger folks are looking at them just as an old worn out truck because that just do not know any better. We have a huge auto mall and we have taken in hundreds of the cars and trucks and I just do not even go to the holding lot anymore to look.
