View Full Version : STOLEN: Dmax/trailer/COPO Camaro

Unfortunately, you read that correctly...last night (8/13/2009) COPO Pete had his 2500 Duramax + trailer + white COPO Camaro stolen from outside a hotel parking lot while he was eating dinner. He was in the Toronto area I believe, as he was getting ready & helping with a drag race this weekend. The trailer was found this morning at the edge of the Indian reservation nearby, but the local authorities have no jurisdiction within the reservation...[his wife had her truck stolen last year and it was found burnt on/nearby the reservation as well].

Anyway, Pete called and asked that anyone/everyone keep an eye out for any ZL1/400thm/4.56, or white with blue guts '69 Camaro parts, that happen to pop-up for sale. The truck is a truck, but lots of blood/sweat/tears in that Camaro...

Scary thing is, they're horribly close to Port Hamilton...

I live about 2 minutes from the reserve in Brantford Ontario. I will keep my ear open for anything as I know a lot of guys down there from my lacrosse years. I have seen the white car at the Ontario Nationals and loved it. I will go out that way tonite and travel some of the spots I have often wondered about. My truck was found out there 6 months ago stripped to the frame.

No one likes to hear of something like this but when it happens to people like Pete & Vicki it really pisses you off. Two of the nicest folks you'll ever meet and they've both had more than their share of trouble over the past couple of years.
I hope someone on this site finds the scum who did this. If so, please post their name, address and GPS location. Justice will be duly dispatched.

It's a black crew cab short bed 4x4, Chevrolet...last time I saw it Pete still had the stock 16" PYO wheels on it, and it seems like he may have an 'SS' hockey stripe on the nose as wel (I wouldn't swear 100% to that last part). I can't remember which trim level the interior was, but it has the newer nose so I know the truck is '03+...

Chevy454
08-14-2009, 09:44 PM
BTW: both Pete & Vicki had there cell phones in the truck when it was taken...my phone shows 2 calls to Pete's cell @ 10:24pm & 10:28pm (just rang and rang)...does anyone know if you can gps a phone *without* it being answered, or can at least track it to which tower Pete's phone was ping'd from when I called? Pete told me on the phone the authorities stated you can only track a phone if it was answered...but it also took the authorities 3 *plus* hours to arrive after the initial call! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Well, yes and no, it is my understanding they have their own police.

The O.P.P seldom over step them and aren't going to in this case IMHO.

Many people from Hamilton know all too well about auto/truck theft and the native reserve.

It was in the local paper last week that over 450 vehicles have been found stripped down out there this year alone. I often think one of my camaros will end up there. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bs.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bs.gif

They may not know what they have with the camaro which might, make it easier to find who has it, if they try to sell pieces. Perhaps the Canada dept of interior should revisit it's reservation agreements if they are going to be nothing more than a safe haven for illegal activities. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bs.gif

I believe they can triangulate a cell phone even if it is not being used. The phone also send out one last "ping" when the battery dies, this can be triangulated (from cell towers) and the phone located.

Verne_Frantz
08-15-2009, 05:00 AM
If that's true, it sounds like an extra cell phone which is left in a trailer or vehicle strickly as an anit-theft device might be worth it. Hide it in the vehicle then call it after a theft and have it traced.
Trailer wheel locks are a great idea to prevent it from happening in the first place, but if it does, it sure would be nice to pin-point where it is after it's gone.

My hope is that someday, I'll read that one of these thefts was caught in the act and the final result is dead bloody bodies in the parking lot. I've heard of way too many instances of this happening. Parking lot security at conventions should be the TOP priority whenever organizing any event where nice cars gather. One way in and one way out with 24-7 checks in the lot.

WHILE A NEIGHBOR WATCHED

she never called the police even though she thought it was "unusual" for people to be in our driveway at 3 am and was "frightened" that they would see her ... thank goodness they moved shortly after that

when I did report it in the morning they NEVER showed, just took a report over the phone, apparently it happens all the time and it is a waste of their time to drive out

This summer here in Athens a guy shot and killed his wife and to male acquaintances, and then he fled. The found his his car a few days later when the cell phone died and sent out a "ping". It was in a wooded area in a ravine.

I don't know how accurate this information is but it explains cell phone tracking.
Apparently a cell phone that is on can be tracked. If it is off it can be located from it dying ping when the battery dies.

They don't ****ing care and live outside the law. Had a buddy loose his Dodge 3500 dually, 24' enclosed aluminum trailer & 4 sleds + gear 6 years ago up there.

If you have any hope of seeing the car again you need to offer a ransom - a large one, and it might make it's way back to you. Otherwise it will leave there in pieces.

I'm shocked that there is this rampant car theft going on from inside these reservations and nobody is doing a thing about it. This is a complete outrage if you ask me.

On the other hand, it could also make for a great diversion for other car thieves. I can't help but wonder why the trailer would be left outside of the reservation. If nobody is going to do anything to them, why not just take it all?

This is fantastic news!! Pete did the smart thing...kudos to him and anyone who provided him with the support and advice.
Last time I passed a Chev dealer you could still buy a DMax. I am wondering if it was the truck they were after in the first place. How could they have known what was in the trailer.
Theory on why the trailer was left...you have to sell it as a complete unit...nothing really valuable to part out.

Cant wait to hear Pete's first person account on this.

Get some rest first!!

PS Lets start a tread on security...I know there are lots of ideaswe can share without exposing our vulnerabilities.

Ironically, the perps did offer a bit of "advice"...disable the truck so it can't drive, whether it's via a kill switch or whatever...if they're not moving in 30 seconds they walk. Just something for us *all* to think about...

I am glad the Camaro is home and everyone is safe, foremost. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bs.gifI am really disturbed that these crooks are well known enough that a phone call can turn up the car that quickly, with or without a reward. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif I would say turn over all info to the local authorities, but also living near a res I am fully aware of the lawlessness and the lack of any internal controls or responsibilities.

Hoping we all can learn from this terrible experience, that Pete has endured.

With all the considerable resources and contacts, our site members must have, surely we can put together a variety of do it yourself security and immobilizer tutorials ?????

I've never met Pete, but would like to extend my best wishes for all your future endeavors.

Hey guys. Thanks for all the support and to all the folks that posted on so many sites about this horrible news. What a roller coaster ride emotionally and physically.
Once I realized the complete rig was taken, I know time was very very precious. The odds of recovery looked very bleak and non existant.
Dealing with the cops was very frustrating and time consumming. A good friend suggested a reward right away to get there attention, cause usually the cars are parted out in the first 24 hours.
I knew in my heart that they were after the truck and the truck only, but the trailer was a bonus and I'm sure they could hardly wait to see what was behind door #1!
My friend went out on the reserve at noon the next day and put out a big reward on the condition that the car came back in the same shape they recieved it. Any damage would result in less money. It took 3 hours for the call(s) to come in.
Saturday things were lined up for a Sunday morning deal.
Sunday got up a 6am and drove the 2 hours back. We got a hotel room 20 minutes away from where it was going to happen. The next 48 hours you could have made a movie. Came home Sunday night with no car and negotiations started all over again on Monday. Finally @ 6pm the exchange was made off the rez in a church parking lot. Can't give any more details than that right now, but I still can't believe the car is in my shop as it was literally hours away from being parted out. Indians told me the car was "scary fast" and that it was the fastest car they ever drove.
You gotta do what you gotta do. There is going to be some changes around here! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Thanks again for all your support.

Sorry for all your grief but way to think on your feet and get the reward out and ultimately the car back .

Pete, that is fantastic news. Glad to hear your car is back in your hands. It sounds like you had to do whatever it took to get the car back, which is exactly what most of us, especially me, would have done. I would have taken out a loan out to get it back. They make trucks and trailers everyday. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Does this mean that if you go on the reservation, get your car, shoot them and then return to non-reservation soil, that reservation police can't do anything to you? And since the shooting didn't occur in their jurisdiction, the local police can't do anything either. That seems to be the way it should work, doesn't it? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

In any event, I'm glad you got your car back. I just have a problem with people who feel they have the right to take or destroy something that is not theirs.... Although I guess this is an interesting theory when the issue involved Native Americans....

Really Happy to see you get the copo back Pete I know it would pretty much kill me to have that happen to mine.
I don't transport mine long distance with a pickup anymore but when I did I always pulled the starter or fuel pump relay out of the fuse box and took it with me even when I just went to eat and still worried about it.

Well, taking the fuel pump relay out has become immensely popular and it's quite easy to open the hood, rob a relay from a different station and you're back in business. Kinda like the ingenious guys that would remove their coil wire and carry it in their pocket. Well, if I want your car I just pull a plug wire, it becomes the new coil wire and I just drive your car away with a miss and only 7 cylinders. I'll fix it later. People think these cars were so hard to insure because they were so fast and dangerous but that's just not the case. They were hard and very expensive to insure because with "427" advertised on the front fender, there was a very good chance you'd be followed home one night and your car would disappear down the road before you could even finish paying it off. This is the real reason people would remove those side "Yenko" stripes. It wasn't that they couldn't get any races anymore, they simply just wanted to keep their cars!

But I can't believe there is this much car theft going on in those regions and nothing can be done about it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif Something needs to be done before it gets violent and someone gets seriously injured or killed. Also Municipal, Provincial, Federal Goverments and Court system do not have a clue what to do and from my observations are so terrified of the native situation/ land claims they refuse to take a firm stand or opinion, but rather put their their heads in the sand, or give appearances of going through the motions and accomplish nothing, while spending big taxpayer bucks.
