Going thru and documenting everything on the L79 - outside of the smog everything is as it was when the car was bought new. Dates are perfect, original chalk just some very cool stuff.

The one thing that has me stumped is the distributor date. I know there were two distributors in 68 for the L79 - the (444) being the early version. Engine assembly date was Feb 20, 68 while the dist is dated July 21, 67. Could it be that this distributor just got cast aside when the new version was released (478) finally making it on to my car months later? The other question is if you were to get a service distributor would there be the paint stripe or was that an assembly line only practice to identify the distributors?

Wow that is a nice Chevelle! Robert Jones in Pennsylvania has an original motor 68 L-79,same color combo as yours except his is a convertible with a 12C build date. I can check with him and see what # is on his dist.

Love those aircraft landing lights too..... had them in all of my cars back in the early 70's.

I've got a 444 distributor dated 8A31. When did they switch to the 478? I bet that 7G21 distributor is original to the car. The rest of the car is just too unmolested.

Jeff,

For what it is worth, my 69 Camaro with 12K miles was built the first week of Jun, 1969. The steering box is dated 257 of 1968.

Bob Jones L-79 has a 7G21 date on his dist with the yellow stripe! Must have been a L-79 thing.
