Here's a picture of the 69 Sports Department sign that was in one of our local high school papers way back in 1969.

The picture was taken in the showroom of South Bend Gates Chevrolet.

I have one of those lighted signs in those pictures that hung in the dealership here in town. It is the one with the redline tire and mag hubcap "CHEVROLET SPORTS DEPT" what is something like that worth, as i have never seen another one like it as well. Geoff.

Geoff,
Single sided or double sided? They produced them both ways. Yours sounds like the 69 version. Condition is everything with these plastic light ups. You can get somewhat of an idea from the auction link obove. Nicer ones will bring a bit more and worse of course less.

It is the sigle sided version, let me take some pics of it here in the next few days and i will post them, as for the condition, it does have some cracks and the end that plugs into the wall has been cut off, but it works, just wondering what it is worth. I dont want to sell it, i have just never seen another one like it and was curious, it has a lot of sentimental value for me. Geoff. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Should be a double sided one arriving here any day from another source....... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif I think we need a bigger showroom!

I have collected nearly every single Chevrolet Sports dept. promotional item ever made,
from it's inception beginning in April 1968,to all the way up to 1976 during the Olympics.
They didn't offer the 69 Sports Dept. sign light as a double, only a single.
It was never offered that way in any of the ad material, and it's frame design won't allow it.
Here's just one I found hanging in Fencl-Tufo Chevrolet many years ago without any flaws.

The 1970 Sports Dept. sign light was newly designed and was available as either a single,
or a double sided thanks to it's new construction and easy slipout rear panel.
These were pretty expensive back in their day.
I have both, but only took pix of the single.
This one came from Celozzi-Ettleson Chevrolet.

Rick
If it did not have so much sentimental value to me, I would. It originally came out of Richardson Chevrolet here in Salinas where i was born and raised. Interesting story on how i aquired it. about 1987 a friend of mine had a buddy that was working at the dealership that had it and has been family owned since the 1920's and passed down to the two brothers, well anyway one week the two brothers went on vacation. One brother ran the parts dept, the other ran service and new car sales, someone at the dealership ordered the attic over the parts dept, cleaned up( too much junk) these two brothers had collected stuff in that attic since their parents owned the dealership.Whoever the guy was that ordered it cleaned up thought this was going to be his chance to clean up as they were gone and was siezing his chance.( of course when the two brothers got back he was fired for doing this) They had a dumpster delivered to the dealership and my friends buddy was the one tossing stuff and this sign was one of the things that he pulled out of the dumpster( that someone else cleaning up had thrown away)gave it to my friend and i proceded to bug him about that sign for about 5 years, as i had a 66 ss chevelle that had those hubcaps came stock with. Well i finnaly got it ($100. a lot of money i thought at the time) now that dealership is gone as of 4 years ago and this is one of the few things from the 60's that still exist from there.
