Congrats on a cooolllll carrrrrr !!!! i guess the hideaways were not working early on..and that's why GM switched to the vacuum hideaways...and are they the "simulated mags" in that original pic?..dig the red stripes...cool color pic...
So what is the story on the original owner buying the car ..and keeping it so long?? If you don't mind my asking...I just think that is one of the coolest parts of a car like this !!
Thanks for sharing.... Max

I thought that you had to get front disc brakes with a big block 67 Camaro? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

The only 67 Camaro that required front disc brakes was the Z/28. Disc brakes were optional but not required on any other 67 Camaro.

Bruce, mine has drums. Also, in '67 the disc option required the Rally ("Disc Brake") wheel, like your brother's Camaro. From '68-on it didn't--you could get steelies with hubcaps/wheelcovers on disc cars and the Rally wheel became an option, I think on all cars drum or disc.

To get a bigblock i believe you had to order the SS package which included discbrakes. No factory bigblocks with drumbrakes. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Same with Chevelles. Disc were an option on the 67 and 68 SS and part of the 69 and up SS package. The 67 and 68 had 4 piston calipers.

Someone commented that the light doors were not working in this photo. I think on mine if I turn the engine off with the lights on the doors stay open. Then, when the key's off and I switch-off the lights, the lights go out but the doors remain open. I'll have to go check that. I think the photo depicts a "normal" condition.

I was at a car show with my 69 RS. I parked and got my lawn chair and was sitting by my car. There was an older lady sitting on the ground next to me. She commented on my ar being a very nice car. I told her thanks I love my car I only wish it was convertible.
sappy787
09-30-2009, 08:35 AM
She paused and then said my brother who is ill has a 67 convertible and he bought it new in 1967 from a dealer in Texas. She said he told her it was on the show room floor and had just rolled off he delivery truck.
sappy787
09-30-2009, 08:37 AM
I didnt think much as I figured it was a plain convertible. Her husband showed up a little later and I brought the camaro convertible back up. He says oh yes it has a 396 and its a true 4 speed. Needless to say they now have my attention. He mentioned someone offered them 9k a couple years ago. So they just left it in a garage hid from her brother who was fighting Ahltimers Disease. She said he tried to drive it to Colorade a few years earlier and got lost
sappy787
09-30-2009, 08:40 AM
A few days later I went and looked at the car. They put a new battery in it and fired it up. No smoke or knocks and it sounded damn good. I knew I had to have the car. I had no idea about the pace car thing. I saw it as a 396 convertible 4 speed. I bought it that day and drove it home. I started trying to decode the cowl tag & vin and couldn't decode L181A. I emailed CRG and they congratulated me on having a 67 Indy pace replica.

For some of the comments earlier the Z was specified for Disc and the L35 and other 396's were drums but could be upgraded to disc. In 67 when you ordered disc brakes there was no option but to get the rally wheels as there were clearance issues with the current steel rims and they did not re-engineer and offer them up for the Camaro for the 67 model year, later they would become an option. Links to the GM letters/announcements are listed below. For the Z the disc brake info is on page 2, the L35 and L78 do not listed as an upgrade for disc as it was not offered in base trim but again could be ordered with them as an option.

Merle had the Camaro towed from Colorado to Iowa. Iowa is where he is living now. He told the mechanic the car didnt sound right and he wanted it gone thru. The mechanic said Merle told him it was a pace car he bought in Texas while in the miliary.
sappy787
09-30-2009, 08:18 PM
Merle said he and a friend went to the dealership and the car had just rolled in and was being put on the showroom floor. He inquired and was told initially the car wasn't for sale. Teh salesman advised it was a display car for a new Chevy promo. Merle said he stayed persistent and they ended up charging him an additional fee to buy it. I dont recall what the mechanic said but it was some sort of a special fee he agreed to pay to get the car. That fee was above and beyond the invoice price.
sappy787
09-30-2009, 08:20 PM
He said Merle also agreed on some sort of contract that he would leave the decalls on the car for a period of time. The mechanic didnt recall for how long. Merle told the mechanic it was a special car and he would never part with it. Merle told the mechanic he was to leave the decals on for twom months but took them off after a month. Thats why te picture with the decalls has to be when the car was NEW.

Merle's familt has confirmed the mechanics story. He was in college and a military officer going thru pilot training when he got the car.

Last point on '67 disc vs. drums:
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a234/BE427TJ/Y-Net%20Photos/DanaChevrolet1967NewCamaros.jpg
The car in the foreground has drums, thus the FC wheels and, in this case, P01 wheel covers. The second car has discs and thus the Disc Brake wheels. The SS427 Impala also has discs, as can be clearly seen. Dana Chevrolet, 1967.

The first 67 in the picture above has Firestone D-70 14 Wide Oval Redlines....
The second 67 has Goodyear Speedway Widetreads in D-70 14! Not because of the rally wheel option just because Goodyear was the little known second vendor in both plants ( see how close the redline is to the rim bead comparatively)...FYI

Well to perfectly honest. I have had many nice old cars but had never bothered to join any sites.
This whole BB pace car thing was a accident anyway. So I figured I would give the site a chance. ( This post is not to all members as some are very helpful and just appreciate a rare car)> But some such as Zeddler have other thoughts)
I ended up being suprised at how many busy bodies such as yourself that are just out to get info, buy or just out to pick a car apart.
I was too quick to post pictures and give info. It didnt take long for the emails trying buy and people like you who just wanted to pick the car apart.
So today is the end of posting any info or trying to get any. So I figure emails will stop with posting it is SOLD !!
Goodbye & Goodluck !!

I just found it interesting to see how you were so bummed on the Pace Car site that the motor was decked and now it was all a big mistake. Those who have been around long enough have a pretty good idea of what you are up to...in fact, we think it's quite amusing. Another ZEDDLER Quote straight from your own home page:
I think all car nuts have a "Dream Car List" of the special cars that they would hope to own one day and I am no different. Although there are probably a dozen that I wish I could acquire, I have tried to be realistic based on my expected financial situation in the foreseeable future and have narrowed down my list to 3 very special cars. In no particular order, they are: '67 Z-28 Camaro, '67 Camaro Indy Pace Car, and a '70 SS454 LS6 Chevelle. If I become rich and famous one day http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif, then I'd like to also add the following: '67 L36 Corvette, '67 RS/SS396 L78 Camaro, and a '70 LT-1 Corvette. If you happen to own one of these special cars that you'd like to pass along to another enthusiast or know of one for sale, please contact me.
Wow funny that says a 67 pace car in there. It must be all me making this stuff up.

That is too funny! You are a Police officer and you are outright lying in a public domain. I give any moderator on this site permission to access my PM's to prove that this is a complete fabrication on your part. Will you do the same Snappy?
As many know I haven't updated my website in years and no longer "collect" Camaros. I am looking for a nice '67 SS, not a Pace Car...and if I were looking for one, it would be a Festival car with docs and the "real" original motor...no one that has been fabricated like your stories here. I even wonder if ol' Merle is a figment of your imagination also? Please, we see what you are up to and know why you came here trying to sell your car...now that your work is done, stop making a fool of yourself and move along...
If you are so sure that I sent you an email, please forward it to any moderator on this site. Keep it intact so that my ISP can be seen - don't fabricate another cut and paste story like you did above. I can assure you that doesn't exist either...just like the numbers on your block!!!
