Is there any stampings cast on the inside of these that state who made them?

I was under the impresion that Ansen originally made these for Joel and others back in the day. Those have the 739 and something like Chev or Chevrolet cast into them.

In the prime of produciton, demand was so great they actually started having some made in Japan. I'm pretty sure Ansen is the original source and CP just private labled(s) them. If this is true (I am going on conversations I had with Ansen back in 2001) I don't think Joel would buy through CP since they are not truely the original source (would not have been cost effective).

I also beleive the original Motion covers were only sold as chromed aluminum and black wrinkle. I have not found any evidence that they sold any in the plain buffed aluminum.

I think the later, like late 90's early 2000's hade a different casting or partial to what was originally under the covers. Regardless of that fact, not many of those chromed aluminum covers have aged well. These would be a great set to send out and get chromed.

I agree with everything you posted except the thought that Motion never used polished covers. The first set I ever got are actually polished, and have the large Motion emblems "cut down" to fit inside the covers. I believe them to be totally original and legit, and they are polished, never were chromed or painted. 739 on the insides...The CP's are newer and while from the outside they are identical, they were not the ones used my Motion.

FWIW only the chrome plated Motion ones I've ever had were cast in Japan.

I don't have them in front of me, but I have a set of these type for a SBF that were ordered from the Motion catalog. They are chrome plated, but I'll have to check to see if they are from Japan.

I would be curious to see if there is a pattern on the Chromies comming from Japan. Thanks for sharing about your buffed originals.

Thanks for the reply. I just picked up a set that appear to look like the ones you had on ebay. There isn't anything cast inside of mine either that tells me who made them.

I would say if there is no raised casting, then you've got a set of the more recent covers produced by Ansen for CP beginning in the late 1990's or early 2000's.

Here is a set of Buffed Aluminum covers which have both the raised casting numbers and the Japan id, obviously NOT chromed. Credit to whoever originally posted this on the site about 5 years ago.

Here is a set of original Chromed covers bought out of the Motion Catalog. They are both Chromes AND not from Japan.

I am no expert. For all I know the buffed aluminum covers could have made up the majority of what Joel sold. My personal experience has been that the chromed ones with Motion badges are the only type of virgin valve covers I have seen. I say this both on ones I have seen in person ADN what I observed in pictures, catalogs and descriptions I have read.

All of the buffed aluminum covers I have seen have either had emblems removed, attached or "restored". I beleive the majority of covers I have seen recently sold started out as buffed aluminum ones, but somehow have become "super polished" and called restored. I cannot begin to speculate on what was on the under-side of these covers.
