Mine was a 65 Chevy II Nova SS. I paid $3oo for it from the local gas station owner. Born with a 194 c. i six (replaced with a 327/300 )and a powerglide. Sold it to a friend who put a straight axle on it and used it as a drag car.

Make sure you're sitting down to hear about this fine treasure. My first car was a 'Vette.

1977 Chevy Chevette - Rally 1.6

It wasn't the ordinary Chevette... it was a Rally! The Rally came with the fierce 1.6-liter 4-cylinder instead of the mundane 1.4. It had the special gauge package that even included a tachometer. Dark navy metallic blue and gold rocker panel stripes.

I had geniune imitation fuzzy sheepskin seat covers, a big ol' power booster equalizer / amp (you know... the $20 version you'd buy at a swap meet), 6 x 9 speakers in the hatchback area that were just stuck to the metal with the magnets on the back of the cones, and the coolest part of all.....

Genuine 4-lug Cragar S/S rims with white-letter tires! 50-series tires in the back and 60-series tires in the front.

Also, I quickly realized how convenient it was that the back seat folded down. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

’55 Ford – bought it in ‘63 at 14 with money made from pumping gas at a Shell station after school. $1 an hour off the books!
Primed it, dropped in a 430 Lincoln and a 3 speed, buckets from a Grand Prix and ’60 Dodge taillights!

My first was a 69 Nova I bought when I was 15. The car was just a "plain Jane" 307 car but had a 327 in it when I got it. The body/floors were rough, was nothing real pretty but all I cared about was going faster. I remember making weekly trips to Super Shops, Midwest Auto Specialties and Summit Racing in Akron spending my hard earned gas station job money on speed parts...

I added a nitrous power shot system, 411 gears in the 10 bolt rear, very good B&M shift kit in the turbo 350. Motor was mildy built with an Edelbrock Performer Cam, stock bottom half, stock compression/pistons, Edelbrock performer intake, Holley 600, Blackjack headers and Sonic Turbo Mufflers that turned down just before the rear axle.

I put the nitrous system on my senior year of High School. My buddy had a 72 Plymouth Scamp with a built 340 and nitrous. We had the fastest cars in our senior class. I remember street racing another buddy that had a 65 Mustang with a built 289/4 speed. I literally blew his doors off and remember smoking the tires and burying the tach at 8 grand with the NOS system on!! Car was really fun. I also had a big ole' Hurst Indy auto shifter sticking up out of the floor. Everyone thought the car was a 4 speed. The trans that was in that car was the best I ever had. That thing would literally slam into gear and chirp the tires between 1st and 2nd gear even if you were not "in it." http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

I parted the car out and sold it back in 2000 and kept the motor/trans. The motor is now sitting on an engine stand in my garage. Someday I want to go through it and rebuild it and maybe put it back into a Nova..

Thats how I acquired my first love and passion for Novas!! Here are some old photos of the car...

1957 Belair post with a 283 bored to 301, L79 solid cam, 2.02 fuelie heads, finned aluminum vette valve covers, holley 750 and a built aluminum glide. Marina Blue with black and silver interior. My dad and I took it apart and basically just cleaned and painted everything replacing what it needed. It was so solid though no metal work. Paid $750 for it!

Quite right.

Here's the Z11 back in 1977. All 145 pounds of me at the time (most of that was the hairdo). I had saved every dollar I had since I was born and bought it for $2,700. One of five kids, my parents were rather frazzled and could never keep track of who was who. I thought it was kind of weird when my dad OK'd the purchase and helped sign the paperwork. When we got it home my mom says to him: "You know HE is 14 and his brother is 16!" He just looked at me with that Al Bundy, head-shaking look and walked to the living room and sat down on the couch in front of the TV. My brother ended up getting a Daytona Yellow SS396 4-speed Camaro a month later. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

1969 Z/28 when I was 16 (1975). Cortez silver. Used to drive around w/open headers a lot. Sold it in 1977 for $1600 to buy a '77 Kawasaki KZ1000. Sounds crazy but they were plentiful back then - just another used car.

My first was a triple black 69 Chevelle SS, I bought it when I was 16. Engine must have put out well over 400hp, I was always out of gas and the rear tires went bald all the time for some reason http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif. I blew it up doing burnouts during the homecoming parade, parked it wondering how bad I hurt it. Went directly to the homecoming game, I had a great game, caused a fumble on the first play from scrimmage and we ended up blowing them out. Wasn't until the next morning that I pulled the dipstick, what a sick feeling. Didn't get it back on the road for months, rebuilt another 396 in an open garage, then had to sell it to go to college. Bought a 76 Toyota Corolla, for college what a step down. I would've killed myself in that Chevelle though so in retrospect it was the best thing that could have happened. Wish I had that car back it was a monaco orange car originally. Fond memories of that car.

My first car was a black on black '65 Impala SS when I was only 12 years old. Cost was $50.00 and all it needed was a battery. Got suspended from Junior High School for driving my own car to school...

Purchased three more '65 Impalas before I turned 13 (white, yellow and green). Most expensive one was $75.00 because it didn't need anything. Played musical engines, tranys, interiors, etc. with them in order to learn about "Chevrolets". So much for matching numbers on those cars...

Gosh I miss the days of cheap solid classic cars.......

Mine was a 1971 Chevelle, antique white with a black gut and black vinyl roof. Had a 307 with the air cleaner lid turned over to sound "tough." LOL! Bought it back in 1990 off the original owner with only 47,000 on it. Best thing is that I still have the car sitting in the garage. Only thing is now it's 1995 Corvette bright white with a black gut and black vinyl roof. Oh and it's gotta a 350 now too. otherwise, the car is still pretty much the same way I bought it. I've always heard stories from the older guys asaying they "wish they had their first cars again." Well, I did everything I could to be able to say that I still do.

I went thru 3 cars in my senior year in H.S. ... The first was a 65 triple black 442, which was owned by a local gas station owner. I paid $800.00 for it. Had a blast in that car for about 4 months. Then some kid with more money than brains offered me twice what I paid for it, so.....

I took the profits from the 442, and bought a real nice used red 68 SS-396/350 h.p. Chevelle. Same thing happened to the Chevelle after a few months of my pounding that thing whenever the time was right. Some guy REALLY wanted it, and paid me way more than it was worth.

By then I had enough cash for my dream 67 white Vette coupe. Small block, blue interior. Actually I bought the Vette from a gas station owner too. I drove the Vette, the last half of senior year. Then came the wild summer after H.S. graduation.

One hot Sunday afternoon, I was cruising along a country road in my Vette, with my girl friend, and didn't see the 69 GTO slam his brakes on in front of me, to make a turn. The GTO was jacked up in the back. I slammed into his undercarriage, and squashed the Vette, in a cloud of dust, up to the windshield. No one was hurt, but what a mess of tiny pieces of shredded fiberglass, mixed in with antifreeze. This was to be my 1st experience restoring a car. No frame or engine damage, because the GTO sat so high, but I learned at an early age, how to do fiberglass work, and paint. It took about 6 months, but it looked perfect when it was done. Luckily, I haven't wrecked a car since.

Anyway, those were my first 3 cars. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif All hot rods!

<font color="blue">My first car in 1976 was a 1971 Dodge Charger R/T 440.
My dad would not lend me the extra $$$ to buy a 1967 Camaro SS 427 / 4 speed (street race car)so this was all I could afford.

The ad said 71 charger - custom carburator - excellent condition - $1400 firm.
The custom carb turned out to be a chrome air cleaner.

I went and looked at it &amp; told the guy I would take real good care of it but all I have is $1100. He liked me &amp; said OK.
What a great car. 13.99 at the track just like I bought it &amp; I drove it everywhere/everyday.</font>

Well my second muscle car was a 1969 RS/Z28 hugger orange black stripes and vinyl top. I purchased the car in 1979/80 in Franklinville, NJ. All was going well on my way home to a suburb of Philly until I decided to get on it in my home town. Well I attracted attention, unfortunately I was pulled over and given several summons (noise , no registration excessive speed) geez give a kid a break. I was a block away from the tag store for registration. I kept the car until the spring of 1983, when I was married and needed funds to buy our first home.

1976 Datsun B210. More rust than metal. Bought it from my uncle for $100. Would backfire every time you wound it out a bit. Oh, the seat would also spontaneously recline!! That was fun.... got to learn about engine work with hat one... thank you Chiltons!!

2nd car.... 1970 Camaro SS Silver black soft top 4 speed... with the most powerful 305 on earth... no idea what that engine was but it went like a bat out of hell!! That sucker would do the best burnouts going a bit sideways down the road. Loved it!! 2nd engine in the car LT1.... nice.....

Sold it in 90... regret it to this day... the guy I sold it to sold it to a guy in Sweden.... never see that one again...

I love this thread since it brings back the memories. My first car was a 1977 Camaro LT, gold metalic exterior with tan cloth interior and auto. Like some others I bought it from an auto mechanic. Wrecked the car to the point of being close to totaled and Dad made the insurance company total it to teach me a lesson. Saw the car later repaired and another teenager driving it and he eventually really killed it by running into the back of a semi-trailer.

Next 2 cars were 1974 Nova Customs, 2 doors with 350 an automatics.

Well in my last post I said stay tuned.... well after 24 years of persistence my second and favorite muscle car is coming home. I received a call on 10/14 of this year a day before my mother passed stating the owner was finally prepared to sell. It certainly was a bitter sweet moment, but the great pumkin is on her way home. She still has her orig drive train and loaded with options. Sammy will be proud .. the car will be day 2 just like the way I originally had her. Its been a long journey and I'm glad she is home. Nick, A '61 bubble with dual quads? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I like!

Wilma, New Yawk ain't that far from Illernoiz so watch it! And to set the record straight, I bought the car from Fred Flintstone.

Hard to really say which was my first car. I drove a '53 Chevy for a while, then a '55 Olds Super 88; both while in High School and both titled to my Dad. The first car I bought was the '57 BelAir that's still in the garage.

My first car was a Nova also...a brand new Hugger orange 70, 307, floor mounted 3 speed, and rally wheels.

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i115/bpritchard/70Nova4.jpg

Picture was taken by my dad just after I drove it home from the dealership; note the Monroney sticker still in the rear quarter window. Rally wheels lasted about 2 weeks, replaced by Keystone mags that looked similar to Torq-Thrusts only with darker spokes. OEM exhaust lasted about another 2 weeks, replaced by a set of duals with glasspacks from Midas. Sold the car after 5 months because it wasn't fast enough. Bought an R4 red 69 Dart Swinger 340 with a 4 speed and 3.55 Sure-Grip...had loads of fun with that car!

Rick,

Every vehicle in my life that I have purchased new, I kept all related paperwork...except that one http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif As best as I can recall, the window sticker was a tad over $2700 and I believe I paid about $2400 plus tax and fees. I do remember my car payment was $77/month. Bought it from Egizio Chevy-Olds in Naperville, IL.

The story continues...

Well my car finally arrived this morning. Below is an article I wrote for the AACA region club. I shared my youthful experiences related to being a car nut and the journey I have traveled with this car...

She’s back…

As I have mentioned in the past, we antique and classic cars enthusiast play an important role in preservation of these historically significant cars. Well these cars also play a role in preserving our youth and for me, it brings me back to a simpler time.

I would like to retrace my steps in being a certified car nut. Really, there is no denying that if there was a certification test for this distinction, I would pass with flying colors. I am going to delve into how I became one and why I have chosen this year and model car. It started in the spring of 1967 while on my way to elementary school. That is a point in time I remember vividly; first I heard this car tearing down the back roads of suburban Philadelphia (NewtownSq). The tone of that exhaust, the lope and sound of the solid lifter camshaft left quite an impression. It was a white with black stripe 1967 Camaro. In subsequent years I came to learn it was a schoolmate’s brother’s 1967 Z28 Camaro, one of 602 built for the Trans Am racing series.

Fast forward a couple of years to the summer of 1969, I was on Bishop Hollow Rd in my home town of Newtown Sq., Pa. riding my bike, when an orange 1969 Z28 power slid into the Sun Oil research facility. Years later I became friends with Bill Scott and told him about the orange Camaro and he stated &quot;that was most definitely Mark Donohue driving his personal car, likely picking up some parts I had fabricated. He was a mad man behind the wheel&quot;. Scotty worked at Sun Oils R&amp;D facility but was on loan to the Penske race team. In fact Bill Scott, known as Scotty was Penske’s chief mechanic on the Grand Sport Corvette and was a member of Penske race team until the early seventies. The Penske/Donhue race team dominated just about every form of racing from Lola, Formula One and Indy, but none more so than the 1968 &amp; 1969 Trans Am racing series running the Chevrolet Camaro. OK now you know how I got hooked on these cars.

Mark Donohue met his untimely death on August 13, 1975 as he prepared for the Austrian Grand Prix. Well the loss of Mark had an effect on me and my goal was finding a car identical to the one Mark drove into the Sun Oil facility.

In the fall of 1979/80, I found such a car in Cherry Hill, NJ area, a 69 RS/Z28 originally delivered to Jay Chevrolet Haddonfield, NJ. On my way home I crossed over Commodore Barry Bridge into Philly and all was going smooth, but as I entered my town Newtown Sq. the excitement got the best of me and I ran through the gears. That was a mistake because I was immediately stopped and ticketed for several violations, no inspection, excessive speed and noise (geez give a kid a break). Believe it or not I found out years later that the police officer was a Camaro lover too but unfortunately that didn’t prevent him from giving me the tickets). I rebuilt/restored the car in 1979-80 and had a blast driving it. A job transferred me up to Long Island in 1981 and shortly thereafter I met and married my wife in May of 1983. As with any young couple we wanted to own a home so we sold the car in June of 1983. I advertised the car for sale in Super Chevy and Larry Beard, from Crockett, TX drove up and purchased the car (my wife said Larry and his wife were literally jumping for joy when they saw the car).

Larry sold the car in late 1985, and I tracked the next owner down thru the TX, DMV. So for 20 plus years I have called the owner 2-3 times a year hoping he would part with the car. Basically the conversations were always the same; he would ask &quot; How much is it worth now?&quot; and nothing more. This past Oct 14th I received a call from the owner, Mark S. and he stated he wanted to sell. Two weeks later I was on a plane to TX. The car needs some work as it hasn't been run for over 15 years, but it still retains its original drivetrain and some of my modifications. Well she back home, and needless to say my goal is to relive my youth and have a blast from the past. I will need to rebuild a few things, but our first outing will be on a date with my wife like we had 27 years ago. http://www.yenko.net/attachments/437537-Sidearrival.jpg http://www.yenko.net/attachments/437537-CarArivedi%26I.jpg

54 Chevy when I was 15 (no it wasn't new... I am not as old as Verne). Puke green. Three on the tree.

Paid $75. Previous owner had run some kind of barricade and smashed up the front a bit. I rigged the headlights in with popsicle sticks and rubber bands. Had to change out the rubber bands every couple of weeks or a headlight could fall out and be pointing straight down, hanging by the wires.

Master cylinder went out and drove it with nothing but a parking brake for several months. Didn't get really hairy until the park brake handle broke off. Replaced it with a set of vice grips. Actually took 4 other kids to school in that car driving it that way for a couple of weeks before removing and rebuilding the master cyl in the driveway.

Threw a rod and still drove it another couple hundred miles until it came through the side of the block. Sold the car to a guy for 10 bucks because he wanted the radio. Hooked up a chain and... you guessed it, the front bumper (or what was left) fell off on the first tow away attempt. What a POS. But still, at least it wasn't a RABBIT!!!!

Lynn about 15 years ago a guy who lived near a shop where I worked owned a dodge pickup with a slant 6 in it.It threw a rod,and he drove it with the rod embedded in the side of the block every day for who knows how long.Had a hole in the side of the block you could see the internals flailing around.Sounded like a dead miss, but it drove.Leaked just a small amount of oil thru the fairly large window, surprising to me.Old engines were so cool sometimes.

I tried to find my Silver and black 69 Z only to find out it had been crushed. Tried in vain to find a buddy's Tahoe Turquoise 67 Z. It originally was owned by a GM exec and boy that car was fast.

Have a blast.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. She's a keeper.... I won't say which one Sam. The car has been repainted, but untouched since I sold it in 1983. All the modifications I installed are still on the car headers , traction bars, exhaust and anti-theft (hood cable lock) brings back memories. Just a dose of reality, the car barely runs at this point, but that's a good challenge. Bringing them back to life is most of the fun. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Found this photo of my first car a a race at Argenta Newfoundland in the summer of 1972. Our track was the US Airforce runway at NAS Argentia. My first car was a 68 Camaro in Corvette Bronze. Poor photo as the fog was rolling in. Car on the left is a 68 442 convert that I owned the following year. The Camaro was a 275 horse 327 that was equipped with a TH400 by the time this photo was taken.

I received a call on 10/14 of this year a day before my mother passed stating the owner was finally prepared to sell. It certainly was a bitter sweet moment, but the great pumkin is on her way home. She still has her orig drive train and loaded with options. Sammy will be proud .. the car will be day 2ed just like the way I originally had her. Its been a long journey and I'm glad she is home. Stay tuned for the journey ahead. </div></div>

In the fall of 1979/80 I found such a car in Cherry Hill, NJ. I remember driving the car home and in my town getting stopped and ticketed for several violations, no inspection, excessive speed and noise (geez give a kid a break).

Larry sold the car in 1986, and I tracked the next owner down thru the TX, DMV. I will need to rebuild a few things, but our first outing will be on a date with my wife like we had 27 years ago. http://www.yenko.net/attachments/437537-Sidearrival.jpg http://www.yenko.net/attachments/437537-CarArivedi%26I.jpg </div></div>

I hope you are happily reliving your first Vette.

I answered an ad for a 56 Chevy 210 post car. Lady said if I could get it out of the garage before her husband got home I could have it for $500. because she was cleaning out the garage. I feel bad for the guy now, but I was only 15 and didn't see the big picture. I never kept the good cars in the home garage. :-) Think that guy stayed married long...Might have a pic of the 56, somewhere.

I know this is an OLD thread, but i have to add mine. My first car was in 1989, I bought a 1970 Malibu 307. Gold with black stripes and would burn the tire off of the right rear. I paid $100 for it and drove it home. I rolled it over on a dirt road about 6 months later. That was the end of that one and I have been hunting another one since.
I finally got my Mom's 1966 Mustang 289 Coupe that she bought when I was 6 (1980) and have been s l o w l y working on it between customer's cars.

1976 Datsun B210 - Cost me 100 bucks! There was more rust than steel! My dad and I put one hell of a lot of bondo on that car <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif It would backfire ever time I wound her out a bit and then shifted.

Every once in a while the seat would give way and the seat back would drop backwards.... that was interesting.

The night I bought it my buddy, who knew how to drive stick, took us for a crazy ride through a wooded lot near my house. Nearly wet myself from laughing so hard!! How we didnt slam into a tree is still a mystery. There were also some backfire flames seen from the muffler as we came up the NJ Turnpike.

I decided to drive it to school after a stick driving lesson from my dad..... I got stuck during rush hour in the middle of an intersection! I kept stalling.

The antifreeze was turning a bit frothly and brown. Got to replace a head gasket for the first time! A great experience.

This was also the car that I taught a buddy of mine to drive stick in a snowy parking lot... damn that car would do great donuts in the snow!

Sold the car a few years later when I bought my 1970 Camaro SS... sold it for $100 <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif

1970 Dodge Coronet R/T 440 Magnum auto. Bought it in June of 70 off the showroom floor of Lynn Hickey Dodge in Oklahoma City. This is the only photo I have of it taken in April of 71 when my daughter was 11 months old. Had to let it go not long after the photo was taken. Couldn't afford the huge $124 a month car payments, not to mention the insurance. Traded it in on a 72 VW Bug with $76 payments...and no air conditioning. Funny, I would absolutely die driving around Oklahoma with no air now days, but it didn't seem to bother me back then. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

Well I finally got around to working on the orange Z I purchased back in 2010. The engine and trans were last removed when I rebuilt them in 1978. I wish I had pictures of that but unfortunately do not. In 1980 I had Radar @ K&amp;G Speed and Machine (Philly/Havertown,Pa) do my machine work. He was really on top of his game. Fast forward to Oct 2012 I removed the engine and trans for a refreshening. I dropped the engine off at a local engine builder and I told him make sure you don't deck the block. I said this to him a couple of times. The last time we spoke we discussed the cam selection and a couple of other things and I reminded him again not to deck the block and he started to chuckle; then he states you'll always know its yours because your name is stamped on the block under the timing cover. I guess Radar at K&amp;G stamped it back in 80.

While waiting for the engine to be completed and dyno'ed, I've repainted the engine compartment, retaped the wiring harnesses, refinished any fasteners that had overspray/corrosion, replaced the carpet, repaired and installed the 8 track(I forgot the fidelity I was missing), installed all new rs actuator hoses and light switch, freshening up the trans with new bearings and syncro's and finished a hundred other things on the car that I've been meaning to fix. The aftermarket exhaust is on so when the engine is finished I should be up and running very quickly.

The most rewarding thing is the satisfaction of working on the same car as I had done 30+ years ago as a youngster.

1976 455 Trans Am purchased in 1988 - had a 350 L82 out of a Corvette in it. I later tracked down the numbers matching engine which got dropped in a Buick LeSabre. My family doctor ordered this car brand new in the fall of '75. Here I am at the same Army base runway dragstrip that Canuck referenced in his earlier post - Argentia, Newfoundland about '92.

Most have fond memory's of their first car....Not me. The first car I ever had registered was this R-code 64 Ford Galaxie. Mostly all stock drivetrain-wise, 427,4 speed. What I really wanted was 66 Nova SS (or at least ANY Chevy)not this Ford. But it was 300.00$ (in 77) so I bought it hoping I could get a Nova down the road. I hated this thing, too big, and seemed slow (nobody would help me with it either). Ended blowing it up all over the highway two months later.....

I still have my first car, a 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Originally equipped with a 307/4BBL, THM200 trans, and a 2.14 open ended 7.5&quot; 10 bolt. I used it as a daily driver for 10 years logging over 100,000 miles on it in addition to the original 65,000 it had when I got it. It has been through quite a few changes over the years also. It is on it's 3rd engine, 7th transmission, 3rd rear. Currently it has a pretty healthy 1969 LT1 350 that I built with headers and a true dual exhaust system, a 2004R OD trans from a Monte Carlo, and a 3.73 8.5&quot; posi from a wrecked 87 442. I also upgraded the rear suspension with Hotchkis pieces as well as added the much larger 442 sway bars. I removed ALL of the computer controlled when I installed the 350 in it. I repainted it in 2005 from the original white to a gray/silver combo as well as installed a pair of factory power bucket seats I found in a junkyard.

Here it is in 1998 after I changed the wheels...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/BlueSS454/86%20Cutlass/Cutlass.jpg

and right after I painted it...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/BlueSS454/86%20Cutlass/P5111556.jpg

I took it off the road 4.5 years ago when it would no longer pass NJ State inspection. Now that it is over 25 years old, I don't have to worry about that anymore. I need to drag it in the shop and do some work on it to make it road worthy again. I love this car and I really miss driving it.

Circa 1983. Its a GM-Holden 69 HT Monaro. Orig fitted with a 350,p-glide &amp; 10 bolt, Aust.only had small blocks in all our production cars. I fitted a 396.TH400 4.11 narrowed 9&quot; combo ,it ran mid 12s as a daily driver on 14x10 USRacing 'slots' with 265/50 T/As.
Should have kept it, they are selling for AU$70-100K now. Was a great car that was raced hard every Fri/Sat nite until I sold it after 6yrs.

Here is my 71 Nova. I got it 2 weeks before my 16th birthday. It was a 29,000 1 owner car with a 307 and a Powerglide. This is October 1991.

And here it is again, 2 years later. This is the summer before my senior year in high school, July 1993. Other than the color changes and change to a black interior the car is still stock

Here it is mid 2000's. The 307 was replaced with a 406 and the Powerglide was swapped for a TH-350. The original 3.08 gears were replaced with 4:10's. The body, paint and interior are still holding up pretty good

And here is where it still sits today. This is a 2009 LY6 6.0 backed by a 4L80.

My first driver was a 1966 Chevelle Malibu 4 door sedan. I bought it out of the local paper for $300 in 2000. Stored indoors its whole life after getting hit on the right front in 1973. I fixed it but kept the fixed areas in grey primer. It had a 1969 250&quot; six and a glide with 3.36 gears. Timing gears broke so I swapped in a 283. Also installed front WS6 sway bar and F40 rear sway bar and a power brake booster and some Rally wheels. Absolutely the most reliable car I have ever owned. Car is on the far right in the photo. Sold it my first year of college (2003) to a local guy and he still owns it.

My other &quot;1st car&quot; was my 1967 Chevelle that I still own today. Raced on and off its whole life. I got it with a 305 and a powerglide stuck in it but not hooked up. Bought in 1997 out of Chester Pa. I put a hot 350 in it with a 4 speed and 4.10 12 bolt. Went 13.0 @ 102 at Atco raceway in 2001. Was one of the fastest cars in high school at the time. Attached are a few photos of it racing in Philly back in the day.

My first car was a 1970 Chevelle Malibu 307, Gold with black stripes. I paid $100 for it and drove it home. That was 1990 so it was just and old rusty car. I drove it for about 6 month and rolled it over on a dirt road. Sold it for $150 and thought i got a good deal. The guy I sold it to took the motor and trans and put in his truck and sold the body to a junk yard.
Wish I could buy it back for $150.

Yes - I'm afraid so. Not many places left where you can go and hold the part in your hand before you make the purchase.

LOL! - that's because it IS Atco!

I traveled on the ciruit for about 15 years with the NMCA/NSCA. There were 8 to 10 races per year, all up and down the east part of the country. One of the stops was Atco. Typically we would start in Florida in Feb or March and work our way north as the weather got warmer. One or two events in Ohio and Michigan and then finish up in Columbus or Memphis (depending on the association) in October.

Seven years ago I posted the story of buying this car, selling it, and luckily getting it back. Well after many years of searching I was able to locate the person who sold me the car. I tried searching the Philadelphia Inquirer paper archives to no avail, although I found it originally in one, probably the evening Bulletin. Since I purchased it in New Jersey I decided to search the Camden area paper archives (inspired by PeteLeathersac/Andy)and located the original NJ ad. I knew the ad had to be very specific because I only wanted a hugger orange, black stripe RS/Z identical to the one I remembered Mark Donohue driving in my town as he did a power slide into the Sun Oil facility. To correct the record this was actually my second muscle car, but first Z28.

Once I found the ad which contained a tel# I googled the tel# and located the area of where I purchased the car. The area code was not in the ad but knew it was 609. I really had my doubts this would pan-out. What were the chances that the seller had the same tel# and still lived at the same address. I called and there was a recording of a young person. I thought I hit a dead end, except I remembered that several new area codes were added. I next called using 856 and left a message....and a minute later I received a call back and BINGO the caller Paul M. had owned the car. Well wasn't completely convince he owned the same car so I kind of interrogated him a bit, and he knew the car had fiber optics and a console 8track and other options. I mentioned I knew the dealer and town and he said he didn't think that was correct. He paused for a moment and said &quot;I have the protect-o-plate for that car let me check and now my jaw dropped. After looking at POP, he said &quot;you're are correct it came from Jay Chevrolet in Haddonfield, NJ. Paul actually went with Bill to order the car, and also picked it up with him. Paul is the second owner, and purchased it from his best friend Bill M. in 1971. Bill had to sell because he and his girlfriend were expecting a child.

I will post more info later and pictures when he sends them to me. BTW since he had the POP/VIN he had searched for the car through the PA DMV, and did a VIN search about three months ago and knew the car was located in NY.

Oh and one more thing, he sold the Z28 to buy a 67 big block corvette, and he still owns that car....

I invited him up to visit, drive some cars (especially the orange one) and he's bringing me a present <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif He is as excited about finding the car, as I am about completing the history puzzle. These cars have a story to tell, and Paul sharing its history and gaining a new found friend.... well it doesn't get any better. Paul is a true muscle car enthusiast, and has the same passion as we all do. The original owner Bill lived in Turnersville, NJ, so that's my next search.

Just amazing how everything came together for you Steve also great example of what may still be out there waiting for someone's time/effort spent backtracking.
Awesome you get a new friend out of the deal plus especially cool how Paul's a real car guy who was actively looking for the car!

Love reading these stories and seeing the pics. Now I get to share my son's first car. We spent 18 months looking for the right Chevelle, but the prices just wouldn't let the math work. Instead he &quot;settled&quot; for a 1968 Corvette Convertible.

It's a two owner car, with the second owner purchasing the car in 1973. Born with L79, M20 with 3.23 posi. Corvette Bronze paint. Car has been off the road for 10 years, so all of the major systems require refurbishing, but we have until the end of the summer, before he wants it for homecoming.

We started simple disassembly and are having a great time digging through all the numbers. After we pulled the fule tank, we recovered the tank sticker. Talk about a pretty excited kid!

We'll keep sharing as we get further along.

Taz,

Thanks for the suggestion. The car actually came out of central Michigan (not mush better than WI), but spent a large chunk of it's life in Texas and Georgia. Frame has scale, but no real rot, and the birdcage is perfect.

We just got lucky that the daughter wasn't mechanically ready for the work it needs and that she didn't mess with too much of the car.

You're spot on with the fun part. Son is out in the shop toady tearing out carpet (inservice day at school).
