View Full Version : Delco Remy Coil ID please: "BR 425" ?

Does anyone have a coil application chart , or know what application a Delco Remy coil with a "425 BR" would be?

It was mounted in a 1972 Pontiac V8 coil bracket I picked up a few years ago (the bracket was a unique one year only item and the coil didn't look like it had ever been touched)

As I recall, that coil was only used on Pontiacs built in Canada. I'll check later to be sure.

Delco Remy Electrical Parts Catalog lists the 1852592 coil bracket for the 1115425 coil assembly

1967-73 Pontiac Firebird Parts Catalog lists the 1852592 coil bracket in GR 2.183 for a single application only

1972 Firebird 8 CYL (exc. unitized distributor)

May fit other Pontiac applications but I don't have any other Pontiac GTO Lemans Pass. Car Parts Catalogs

Wow, so that's actually the correct coil for my 72 T/A. Glad I didn't toss it out!

It has a couple dings in the cannister so I guess I'll test it, clean it up, and install it.

By the way, do you have the specs for it? I want to check the ohm rating, etc, to see if it's still good.

Steve are u sure? I thought 455HO's used a unitized ignition.

That is a common misperception for 1972. I don't know about the 455HO GTOs, but the 1972 455HO Firebird Formulas got the semi-functional, unitized ignition as a mandatory option. On the Trans Ams it was an available option. Thankfully, the original purchaser of my car didn't order that option (though it took me three years to locate an original 1112126 distributor).

For the bystanders out there, the unitized ignition was a prehistoric ancestor to the HEI distributor, used in 1972 and 1973. The coil packs in these units would heat up and then stop working, usually in the middle of an intersection or on a highway with a convoy of tractor trailers behind you. Also, the parts were insanely expensive and only available for a few years. It used an octopus-like set of plug wires with all eight wires permanently attached to a bracket that would install on the top of the equally impossible to locate distributor cap. Here's what the wires look like:

If you dont have the PHS or build sheet handy, the way to tell is with the engine code on the block (assuming you have the original block).

Here are the block codes:

WD = 455 HO 4-speed with 1112126 points ignition distributor
WM = 455 HO 4-speed with 1112133 unitized ignition distributor
YB = 455 HO automatic with 1112126 points ignition distributor
YE = 455 HO automatic with 1112133 unitized ignition distributor

My original engine has the WD block code.

I am DESPARATELY trying to find a cap and wire set for the GM UNitized Ignition just like the photos that Steve posted above. Does ANYBODY out there have such an animal or know of anyone who does and might be looking to sell? It doesn't need to be NOS - it can be decent used condition. Although I am primarily just looking for the plug wire set, I would consider purchasing the full cap and distributor if someone had a set that they wanted to sell as a single unit rather than part out. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU
