There was a tsb for GM instrument clusters a while back, don't know if it's still valid. The speedo did the same thing on my 03 Z71 Suburban. After going round and round with the dealer, and reporting it to the NTSB, the tsb finally came out. The work around is to cycle the ignition key on/off, this brings the speedo down to 0 in 5 mph increments. There used to be a guy on ebay that rebuilds the clusters for a lot cheaper than GM, try a search he had a lot of good feedback. The stepper motors are what goes bad.
By the way, that vehicle was the last GM vehicle I ever bought, a $50000 POS.

Common problem. Replace the cluster and move on. It will also need to be programmed, if you are thinking of doing it at home.

I have the same problem with my 05' Duramax and my tach does the same too. Sometimes I have one or the other and sometimes neither.

My '03 Yukon did the same thing at around 85-90k miles.

I'm dealing with the same issue. On my way to Rosemont I glanced at the speedo and was shocked to see I was running 135 @ 2200 RPM. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Below is a link to a guy who repairs them for $169 ($189 for the entire cluster) including shipping BOTH WAYS!

In the mean time there's a 'reset' proceedure you can do. Turn on the ignition and click the key forward just shy of engaging the starter. Each time you do this the speedo needle will work its way back toward zero. It may take five to twenty clicks depending on where the needle sits. Mine works correctly for days, then out of the blue it goes nuts again. And most recently, it worked its way back to zero on its own! Go figure. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif And FWIW, my local dealer told me I'm looking at $600 to $800 for them to do the fix.

Go here. (http://www.mrwhizard.com) http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

They are easy to take out and unplug by yourself. You can also still drive the vehicle without it. I used my GPS for figuring out my speed. Got it back and put it back in. was virtually painless.

And FWIW, my local dealer told me GM is covering the '04s up to 90K miles, but the '05 models up to 100K. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif Seems strange to me but then common sense is pretty rare these days!

Oh GM, why so hard to get the most basic things right?

Thanks Dennis but we've since replaced the '03 with a '07 Denali. Much better build of a truck!

Sounds like a bad stepper motor in the cluster...there's a step-by-step "How To" over at DieselPlace on replacing them. Like someone said above, GM is covering certain years up to certain mileage, so it's worth checking before dropping any $$$...

I just started to repair my 03 Silverado. Very easy to remove the cluster and take it apart. I bought a new stepper motor on ebay for $3.00. When I get it I just need to unsoldier the old one and solder in the new one onto the circuit board.

Since were on the dash topic, anyone have a CD stuck in their stereo unit? My '04 2500HD won't eject the CD, lucky for me its one of my favorites! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif If you take the cluster out - is the head unit sitting right there for easy removal too?

My biggest bitch with my 2000 Sierra has been the CD player. Had it replaced 3 times/4 if you count the time the dealer tried to replace it with one that looked like it had spent an hour tumbling in a dryer. Another time they didn't even check it after swapping the unit, I was PO'd when the first thing I did was put in a disk and it didn't work. They also required two service calls, one to remove the unit then 3-4 weeks later back to get the refurbed unit installed. It quit again after the warrenty expired and I've never bothered to fix it, figured it was pointless. Fortunately the disk ejected. Other than that, it's been a great truck, plan on keeping it another 10 yrs.

On my 2003 Hd2500 Silverado the Oil pressure guage started reading buried up or down about 2 years ago 55k.The speedo just started doing it about 2 months ago.I noticed it moving kind of clicky for about 2 days, then I drovr past a parked cop and looked down at the speedo and was doing almost 90,but the cars around me were psssing me.Now it reads 120 when sitting in the driveway.I noticed the turn the key trick right away, then I took the cluster apart and manually pushed the needle baqck, and the next day it was buried again.Truck just rolled 90K,I guess I'm screwed.
