1967 Yenko Camaros, buyers beware

The last few weeks we have received several calls regarding 1967 Yenko Camaros, basically all asking the same questions regarding the 107 list. To save everyone a few calls, we have gone over all of our info on 1967 Camaros. We will try and answer a few of the main questions.

1.It appears Yenko Chevrolet sold at least 107 Camaros in '67, maybe more.
2.It appears not all '67s received YS numbers.
3.Not all '67s were converted.



Though all Yenko sold cars are neat, as an investment, though often times time consuming and frustrating, do your homework on each car individually, especially '67s. Even though the documentation may point to it being sold by Yenko Chevrolet, documenting a conversion by Yenko is as equally as important, as the price difference between a converted and a non-converted Yenko is quite substantial.

Though everyone within the sYc community operates above board, there are a few out there who, though shunned by the majority of the club, operate by preying on unsuspecting members.

Nothing bothers us worse then having to tell someone they just got taken, so please be careful.

4. Few, if any '67s received Yenko emblems
5. Very few '67s received the Stinger hood, or 'glas decklid


Early on in 1967 it seems Don Yenko's focus was on selling Yenko modified Z-28s for SCCA racing, called the Stormer. A continuation of the Stinger Corvair program.

Appears Yenko did not begin installing 427 engines until the spring of '67, perhaps wanting to convert only factory big block cars.

I have not seen a picture of one, nor know of any that exist today. All I have is a press release outlining the car's options.

On another press release, the 427, 450HP Camaro and the 427, 410HP (automatic) Camaro both list for $4245, while the "Z-28 Camaro Competition version THE STORMER" started at $6000.00. The car was intended for A Sedan SCCA, Trans-American Sedan Championship Races.

Though the type written list of 107 1967 VINs, titled “Yenko Super Camaros” , does not give us much insight into which ones were modified, the occupying paperwork used to compile the list does. Several handwritten sheets by Don and Donna Mae, correspondence with Ed Cole and Joe Pike at GM, Wally Parks at NHRA, Howard Sober, Inc., (transport), status sheets (with notes) from the Norwood plant and GMAC, original Yenko Chevrolet press releases, and Yenko’s own commission sheets, make it much more clear when Yenko did what, and to which cars.

As of now, with the information we have now, I would say there were at least 70 1967 427 Yenkos.

As always, the numbers could change, as more information and cars surface. Example, this week I located information on about 20 1967 Yenko Camaros that I had not seen before, and just recently learned of a couple of newly discovered 427/450HP cars, a couple of 427/410HP cars, and a small block unconverted car.

As I said before, nothing I have in my paperwork, or have seen elsewhere, indicates that Yenko was transplanting 427s into Camaros, until the Spring of 1967. Correspondence with Ed Cole, Don’s go to guy at GM, indicates that in the Fall of 1966, Don was concentrating on the 1967 Yenko Stinger project (a possible COPO), and for the Camaro and Chevy II, modifying their suspensions for SCCA racing. Don writes”….similar to the manner which Carrol Shelby offers the fully prepared Mustang for sedan racing…”

To give you an idea how hard folks are looking for '67s, and locating them, since 9-1-2009 I have shared information on 7 newly discovered 1967 Yenko Camaros.

Ranging from a couple of non-converted SBC cars to a Red/Black 427 4sp car w/POP. In the middle a Dusk Blue BBC/auto car, only the second BBC/auto Yenko I know of.

The lists on our site are pretty much up to date, at least as far as VINs go. We do know of a couple of '67s not on the list, which are legit, but that is about it.

As per other info, we do need to add some updates, but our go to guy to do that is extremely busy.

My 68 had a nose stripe and hood stripe but the 427 emblems are on the hood, but mine is some old 6cyl conversion...

Funny you ask, I have been thinking about the car alot... Bad I know!! Im sure I have sinned in regards of neglecting beater.. but its inside under a cover, I havent had time to work on it at all for the past 10 months, my wife has been finishing school and interning so my extra time has been gone, but on the bright side and im quite excited she graduates on the 18th and the law firm she has been interning at gave her a full time offer, so I get my spare time back next month I get to quit buying very over priced books and get some bonding time at my shop... I decided to check back in today with my new found excitement and had to make sure my stars were on... Beater is a little further than this this is last year, Im going to go blow the dust of the door of my building this weekend and see if its still there and get a game plan I will get some pics of the current condition when I do...

I style think that the mustang was far better than the camaro back in old day! The mustang 2011 new revamped model is totally mind blowing for the price and range of the car, compared to is famous camaro rival. But I style share some love for the two model <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

I went to the Cobo Hall show yesterday with the owner of this car (since the early 70's)and his shop mounted my Cragars ans tires last year. The car is still 100% identical-bluepaint, traction bars, Keystones and silver metalflake nose band.

The 427 is gone replaced by a 327. His GF back in the day '73-74 moved to Ca and he was going to drive out to see her so he sold the 427 for gas mileage sakes and money to offset the trip and on the way out she gave him a Dear John call. The 427 ended up in a tractor puller and is being hunted down.

The Yenko emblems were remove by the first owner because Don Yenko promised the guy a sponsorship and a discount on the car which never materialized so he took off the emblems so not to advertise for Yenko

Came with a 427 from Yenko. The owner has spoken with Warren numerous times who remembers the car for a reason: The original owner got mad at Yenko(see above) , removed all the Yenko emblems and threw(as in baseball throw) all the emblems into the Yenko parking lot.

The guy in the car is a nice gentleman (F.M.) I got to see the car about 5 years ago at his place wife and sons were great as well. This car is a real converted car 100% ...but Warren doesn't have any paperwork on the car . It does have a POP ....and I found the original owner (George) and put both owners together.
