Can you help identify this Aluminum 427 engine?

A Little back story.


My father purchased a 1967 RS/SS Camaro and has had it ever since. Original paint, original interior... 28,XXX Miles.

Around 1975 he went to Houston, Texas and bought from a guy an aluminum 427 block and matching heads from a 1968 or 69 Corvette, Manual Transmission but he can't remember the color of the Vette though.

He recently took the motor out to replace gaskets and to fix an oil leak and took some pictures for me.

Can you help identify this motor, I see it has the Winters Casting mark on the front of the block.

BTW here is another one he restored and his '10 Camaro.

Engine is a ZL-1 and the heads are for L88's and ZL-1's from what I could find on the internet....what are the dates on the block and heads?

Where is the date on the block?

I know he said the guy removed the VIN from the block and put his own number on it but I told my dad he might be able to do some kind or acid etching to bring the original # back.... Like the police do to get serial #s off guns that have been filed off.

So it is a ZL-1 block, there were only like 70 of them made right?

I think they were sold over the counter for a number of years. Maybe someone with more knowledge can help out...as the stuff I am finding is on the internet and easily accessible!

according to heartbeat city...the 1969 ZL-1 should have an intake p/n of 3933198...

The intake does not match the ZL-1, we know that. It is some high flow intake with rectangular ports.

what is the casting number on the backside of the intake? You do have a factory intake there...the ZL1 intake will have numbers ending in 198 and is a rectangular port...the number you posted a picture of for the intake is the firing order.

Soooooo, who is going to omment on the 074 heads on this engine? Acording to the people in the know on the L89 Nova thread they were totally wrong for THAT engine. This should be a 12.5:1 engine with these 074 heads?????

the 052 cast number means it was of the original design as opposed to a later GM block..there were many alum blocks made beside the original 'original' 69 that came in the cars...A few clues to look for. Does the block have screw-in freeze plugs..or press-in? Is there a small stamped 2 or digit number on the rear of the block in the center above the bell housing mounting flange..same number would be stamped on the main caps...a date code and small cast number may be located down on the side of the block near the motor mount area. Some of the known original ZL-1 blocks have the VIN stamped on the front pad and others have the VIN stamped down along side the oil filter. If it is one of the real blocks, you may have a small fortune there. Regardless, it is an awesome street motor!!! A few more pics may help. Good Luck.

074 heads are the only factory correct ZL1 heads...there is nothing wrong with those heads on this engine...yes, that is the correct advertised compression...
ZL1 = 427 cu in and L89 = 396 cu in....same stroke different bore, thus different pistons...

Nathan...do you know how long that car has had the "stinger" hood on it?...

My Dad got that hood in 1968 if I remember correctly, just a fiberglass hood.

BTW for those saying the heads don't work on the motor they have been on the motor for almost 40 years.

HAHA poor washing machines,they the brunt of the mess when they live in a garage.I sell lots of stuff on ebay and almost all of it is photo'ed on or in front of the washing machine.I have seen many other adds with the same location.Most common is the orange or blue stains on the machine from soap spills.I guess its the only flat surface in most garages that doesnt have crap piled on it because the wife wont let it http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

bought a 67 RS-SS new...threw a Yenko hood on it back in 68 and soon after got a deal on a real all aluminum ZL-1 motor and threw that in there. Had the car ever since and still has original paint with the white deluxe interior..... That is one coolll Dad !!!

He loves Camaros, has resorted 5-8 of them and has boxes of original parts.

He said the freeze plugs are tap in or press in not screw in type.


That is a Yenko hood... Cool, he said he got it at a dealership new.

I really know nothing of these cars, I build high HP '05-'08 Dodge Magnums, Chargers, Challengers, and Chrysler 300s.

He said on the side of the block there is a casting mark "KTT CST"

The hood was bought from either S&N or S&S Fiberglass directly back in 1968.
