Pretty wild pile up!! Reminds me of an icy day on the interstate around here, they just keep piling up...

There are obviously dozens and dozens of YouTube clips where there was a fatality, so yes, let's try to keep the footage contained to where drivers walked away.

Here's one from the "flying race car" file, Lemans style...

This one is a classic:

A 1960 Sportsman Race at Daytona. A massive 68-car field, with Banjo Mathews, Fireball Roberts, etc, and I think that's a 1959 Cadillac Convertible Pace Car. At 1:54 into this highlight reel, there's a massive 37-car pileup (the largest wreck in history). Everyone walked away, but the carnage was incredible.

Some of you may enjoy watching this whole 3:23 film. Lots of real oddball cars on the track, and I swear I catch a glimpse of a Studebaker. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

Yeah, some great nicknames back then.

Hey, what ever happened to BuckShot Jones, the Nascar driver of the 00 car a few years back? That was a helluva nickname and matching car number to boot!

Wow, check out that NHRA footage, and at :22 seconds in, you can see Bruce Allen's car is literally cut in half, LENGTHWISE, right through the interior. Unbelievable... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

Kenny Bräcks almost fatal crash. It it a fence pole and it shattered the car. Luckily the cockpit section is very strong and were kept intact.

Kenny is now recovered from the severe back injuries he got in the crash He is racing occasionally in Sweden and is seen on TV-shows now and then.

Rob, I'm glad to see those "kill switches" NHRA requires us to have worked so well for that guy. That would have been my first move as a Safety guy. Looks like it finally ran out of fuel & rubber....

I guess a track official tried getting to the kill switch early on but got hit in the head with shrapnel from the tire/wheel, so that's why it eventually ran out of fuel...

was the driver holding the brake? Otherwise the car would have kept moving.. Why did he not just shut it off then? I don't get it.

The driver was knocked out on the initial wall hit...the throttle hung and the front end damage locked the front wheel(s) basically making it like a line lock. Last I read, there was some discussion that the throttle was possibly stuck open prior to hitting the wall and is what caused the carnage, but the driver says it's still fuzzy...

I was there for that one. I also remember Eddie Hills violent explosion that knocked him out, but don't remember what year. Maybe 2001?

If you check the time on the video it takes over 60 seconds for the safety crew to arrive. That is way to long.

With todays electronic widgets it would be pretty easy to have sensors that detect a hit on the car and instantly shuts everything off.
