Hi Bruce, Here's the write up on the red 1970 Nova. Sammy is always getting on me about building something I could drive. I’ve told him in the past, I’m working on it!
Well I went a little too far!
The first thing was to have the car redone. That was accomplished by Ken Schoenthaler out of Donahue, Ia. He did the paint and body work. The motor was built by Pete from Pete’s Automotive in Pa. Pete is Sammy’s buddy. Pete also did my 69 L-78 Nova motor. When he was putting it together, He said, “This motor is going to thump on the bottom”. Well, it thumps on both the bottom and the big end! The rest of the car was done at my place, in a span of about three months.
Here are some of the details of the car. I tried to build it the way it would have been built back in the day.. The motor is a 454, .030 over. Hydraulic Comp cam,631 lift with a 10.5 compression ratio that runs on pump gas. It has aluminum heads, a 1967 Offenhauser cross ram intake with two 600 Holley carbs, The motor puts out 550 HP. It has vintage headers, a vintage trans loop, vintage S&W gauges and Sun tach. It also has a Hurst auto-shifter, with Hurst line lock. It has a real Vitar trans from Vitar Engineering, in New York. I had a 12 bolt chevy rear end ready to go in, but due to the torque for the motor I went to a Ford 9 inch rear with Vintage Lakewood traction bars. There are no electronics in this car. I run a foot brake car. I come off the line between 1,500 and 1,800 RPM’S. I can do a 60ft in 1.50. My best ET was a 11:20 in the quarter.
And the best thing about the car? It is ALL the fun I’m having doing it!!
Regards,
Benny
