Hi Bruce, Here's the write up on the red 1970 Nova. Sammy is always getting on me about building something I could drive. I’ve told him in the past, I’m working on it!

Well I went a little too far!

The first thing was to have the car redone. That was accomplished by Ken Schoenthaler out of Donahue, Ia. He did the paint and body work. The motor was built by Pete from Pete’s Automotive in Pa. Pete is Sammy’s buddy. Pete also did my 69 L-78 Nova motor. When he was putting it together, He said, “This motor is going to thump on the bottom”. Well, it thumps on both the bottom and the big end! The rest of the car was done at my place, in a span of about three months.

Here are some of the details of the car. I tried to build it the way it would have been built back in the day.. The motor is a 454, .030 over. Hydraulic Comp cam,631 lift with a 10.5 compression ratio that runs on pump gas. It has aluminum heads, a 1967 Offenhauser cross ram intake with two 600 Holley carbs, The motor puts out 550 HP. It has vintage headers, a vintage trans loop, vintage S&W gauges and Sun tach. It also has a Hurst auto-shifter, with Hurst line lock. It has a real Vitar trans from Vitar Engineering, in New York. I had a 12 bolt chevy rear end ready to go in, but due to the torque for the motor I went to a Ford 9 inch rear with Vintage Lakewood traction bars. There are no electronics in this car. I run a foot brake car. I come off the line between 1,500 and 1,800 RPM’S. I can do a 60ft in 1.50. My best ET was a 11:20 in the quarter.

And the best thing about the car? It is ALL the fun I’m having doing it!!

Regards,
Benny

Hey, you know I love the car! I was under it before I was all over it. So when did you put the American racing wheels on the front?

Benny has some fun projects. It started out as a drive it on Sat night, take it to the strip Sunday car. It quickly became a Sunday race car. That seems to happen a lot. It's shot in correct for the year cranberry red.
It was hand lettered by a local sign painter/tatoo artist named Jobber. He also did the Vitar camaro for us.
And to think we met Benny with his silver COPO camaro in Monmouth probably 8 years ago now. The cars are cool. Making friends like Benny are even better. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

The East Penn Plumbing car is the type of car you would see doing battle at all the local drag strips in the area. This nova would even double as a Pro Stock stand in at Raceway Park's Sunday Pro Stock eliminator program in Englishtown, New Jersey back in the day. A great looking car painted and prepped out in Donahue,Iowa which lately has become........Nova country! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Very cool, love the tower clamps and the other stock/day 2 details. Even cooler is the 11.20 time slips. Neat stuff.

Wow Benny, that's cool! I like the personal touch with the "East Penn Plumbing" lettering.

Looks like you've stepped it up a notch again on the serious-race-car-scale... no more passenger rides in that beast.

Anyway, I like it!

Awsome! For us that were too young to remember the way these cars really looked back then your car is a real wake up call.I know that sometimes we get too caught up in thinking that back then these cars looked like they do when we find them all patina'd out today.Old pictures just dont do them justice.A car like yours really gives people a glmpse of what these cars looked like when the paint and lettering really shined.

I recently bid on and won a single cragar supertrick center cap like the one they used in the 1971 season that covered all the lug nuts.If I can ever find a second one ad fureout how they mount they will be on my car.I am a freak for the day race car look, and your car is da'bomb:)

BBBenny has become an even better man since he has been thinking Day-2! That nostalgia thing is in all of us just takes longer for some guys to get it out! The first and reverese only thing was getting to him too. Wait till you see the East Penn Plumbing nova next season. The old Dutchman will have to pull those shoulder belts a little tighter and maybe even take some motion sickness pills. Stay tuned! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif

How did you come to name it "Flying Dutchman"? Does anyone ever give you static about other cars that have had the same name? I was thinking about naming my Nova the Flying Dutchman (since I am of Dutch heritage), but maybe I should think of something else...
