View Full Version : Black 396 air cleaner lid
I am sorry if this is a dumb question but are the 65 Corvette 396, 69 Camaro 396 open element or with cowl induction use the same black air cleaner lid? I have a friend that is looking for one and was asked this but I did know for sure. Thanks in advance.

I believe so.
Jason
I think originally 1965-66 396 Vette & 67 396 Camaro shared the same lid be it chrome or black,part#6422356.
Then lid #6421832 came into effect and was offered on 1966-68 Corvette & Impala w/327 & 427cid.,1969 Impala w/Spcl.Hi-Perf 427cid.and 67-69 Camaro w/396 & 427cid..be it chrome or black.
Rick, if the part number changed then did the lid change in configuration?
That was usually what happened w/their parts in the past, but sometimes something as lil as a cosmetic change would even garnish a new assigned number I've noticed, while other times not.
I don't know if that was the case here.

Would the air cleaner # on the top of the cleaner be the same #s??

The #356 lid w/#816 air cleaner on the 1965-66 396 Corvette shows a notation of CHROME and a price of $8.15 in the 1966 parts book.

I recently purchased this air cleaner http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayIS...=STRK:MEWNX:IT. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260543154583&ssPageNam e=STRK:MEWNX:IT.) I am sure that the base is original but would like to know how to determine if the lid is correct. Thank you for any info. Tom.

The '65 Corvette 396 (L-78) had a black air cleaner lid, and it was the ONLY 60's Corvette that did. There was no such thing as a '66 Corvette 396; '66-'69 Corvette big-blocks were all 427's, and they all had chrome lids.

JohnZ is correct. My dad has a 65 396 Vette. The black air cleaner cover really contrasts well against the chrome of the valve covers and ignition shielding.

[/ QUOTE ] Post a picture of the underside and a better picture of the top side. My guess is that it is original but not sure of the application.
Sorry,my last reply shoulda said the P&A 1969 parts book dated 3/1/69 for Vette/Impala/Truck that calls out CHROME for $8.15 on page 3-39.
Based on what John said, that makes sense,as they were likely reflecting the latest design which woulda been the chrome finish for the 427cid. 66 Vette.
Maybe there was more of a design difference with the #356 vs. #832 lid then just chrome vs. black, based on their different part #'s,specific model applications & prices shown...while both offered at the exact same time too.
I'd like to see these two lids next to eachother.
