Hi,

Thanks to everyone for their kind birthday wishes.
As to the NCR's - all from the brass era - so pre 1915. Also from the small candy store types (highest sale you can ring-up at $ .59), to the really big ones including one that is a free standing floor model. That one is 6 cash register in one, and has a electric motor from 1907 that still works. Oldest? That is 1895 - but rarity trumps age. I have a wood one with an in-laid design and side by side cash drawers (from around 1901), that is the star of the collection. Chaa -Ching! Cool stuff Gary!.

As you probably well know, Kettering designed a few NCR units before leaving and starting Delco including the first electric cash registers...most likely the design you have?.
Kettering and Durant are my favourite early automotive pioneers and I've read a few books on them both.. Kett was an amazing man and the creator of many things besides the electric starter...like freon, leaded gas and single telephone lines that carry multi calls at the same time plus the man who made the modern diesels really work...lots more too!.

Are the original wooden crates the NCR registers were shipped from the factory in worth much?.
A couple years back I asked a guy who bought an old store I used to go to what happened to the old NCR register I used to see there.. He told me he sold it quickly to a collector for some amount I forget but mentioned he'd recently found the original wooden shipping crate for it when cleaning out the basement.. He told me he'd save it for me if it hadn't gone to the dump yet...should I be calling him and following this up?.

HI Back,

The woodencrates do come up on eBay every once and awhile. The usually go for 75 - 100. It is a shame that the crate didn't go with the register - as the crate will usually have the serial number and other shipping info - that matches the original mfg. label under the drawer of the cash register. As a side note, NCR was the first mass producer of machinery that would allow a purchaser to specify - and custom make their register to their needs or wants.
