View Full Version : Has anyone ever found a factory mistake?

Has anyone ever found some original documentation on a car that was wrong? Maybe a typo from the factory on a build sheet or a trim tag that had options that could not be ordered together. I haven't found any yet and was just wondering if any one knows of any that exist.

Does your gas pedal count for a mistake because my Toyota has a very sticky pedal.

a real cool factory mistake is a fellow that lives near me that has an X-11 on the cowl tag real 69 Z-28. Most likely the only one.

i'm sure if that happened, anything could have happened on the buildsheet/docs.

A friend of mine has a 70 6BBL RoadRunner that is a post car with a fender tag that indicates it is a hardtop.

Yes...My POP states that my car is an auto powerglide and the Tag states that it is a 4-speed. I have known the car since 73 and was always a 4-speed. 67 Nova SS 327/4-speed
Found TWO broadcast sheets in the seats...One in the rear upper seat states auto and the one in the back of the upper Bucket seat states 4-speed?? Very weird. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Our 427 car didn't have it's own build sheet but did have the right half from an SS396, in the rear seat back, that was built 75 before ours. Probably a set out on the cushion line. All the tags on the car were normal.

From my many years of 69 Camaros:

Custom interior rear trim panels on std interior car
Full dash woodgrain on a std interior car
Black D96 stripes on one side, white on the other
6/7 tach in a L35 SS
ZL-1 with an E78 x 14 tire pressure label
Missing trunk lid Camaro badge on D80 cars
Mis-stamped VIN tag ‘123339N’. I haven’t seen it but there is supposed to be a COPO with a convertible VIN ‘124679N’
Several body tag errors: build dates of 09, 051, 061, NBR instead of NOR. Convertibles with no X code are common.

That's great. Reminds me of the early 80's when a chevette rolled off the line in Oklahoma City with chevette emblem on one side and a Pontiac emblem on the other (T100?? - can't even remember the Pontiac designation for their version of the Chevette - or as guys at the dealership used to call it - the "shove it").

69 L78 chevelle block and trans were both stamped 4 digits off the actual vin

69 Camaro we are doing in the shop right now has a hinge bolt lying on top of the cowl under the top of the passenger fender that was caulked over and left. We left it there in place.

70 LS6 Chevelle with "ss" on one door panel and "malibu" on the other side.

I knew that there had to be some good mistakes out there, but some of these are more than I expected. Down right funny.

I do have one... Here is a 1969 # matched Z28 that we found a few years back and I forgot I had these pictures. It looks like the body was going to be an automatic car but the problem was noticed and these actions were taken. Kinda funny they only took out one of the screws and decided just to bend the cover over... Here you go and enjoy. Mark

I was talking to the Guy that was painting the outside of my shop office today and he told me of a friend of his that bought a 1968 Impala 396 new. After driving the tires off of it for a few years he had to rebuild the motor. Turned out to be a 427. Being the original owner, he bought and the car was badged as a 396 but would out run every thing around. Now we know why. Has anyone heard of this sort of thing before?

I know a guy who ordered a 66 Impala from Penske Chevrolet. I forget is he said it was a 396 or 427, but it was also a 4 speed car and ordered it with the specific gears he wanted and a posi.

After taking delivery and having fun with it that weekend, he quickly realized the rear in the car was not what he specified. Took it back and had Roger himself look at the car. Story went Roger asked someone to bring him a floor jack and he spun it right there. No posi and wrong gears. He got the right ones dealer installed!

Don't know if the mistake was a factory one, or if the dealer didn't order the car right.

My Dad bought a 1977 Z28 brand new. I went with him to pick it up. It had type lt door panel medalions (power window car)instead of z28.

I know a guy who ordered a band new 68 Z/28. On the order sheet he chose code U for Lemans Blue, but when the car was delivered it was Sequoia Green (code V).

I have spoken to the original owner of our 68 L78 Nova several times and he has told me he ordered the car with a black bucket seat interior and it came in Ivy Gold with a bench. He ended up keeping the car http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif and had the dealer install some performance gauges, headers, etc. the factory 8-track came in a box in the trunk for dealer install...

Not a factory mistake, but interesting nonetheless. When I first got into the hobby,I pumped gas at a local gas station where the mechaic was a GM dealer mechanic in the mid to late 60's.He was telling me how a customer came in with a 65 vette with a blown up 425hp 396,and service replacemnts for those engines were hard to find,so they threw in a 425 hp 427 and didnt bother to tell him about it.I bet that one made for a zippy combination.

Just thought of another one...

Sammy was a factory mistake...but all the defects were covered under warranty http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

He is out of warranty now, so he doesn't push things too hard...you have to be careful with those older engines http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

My survivor 69 Z has a 69 firebird decal for the jacking instructions. kind of funny...

Not sure if this counts as a mistake...
But my 70 LS5 Chevelle did not come with the HD battery option on the build sheet as most all 454's did.

I had a '67 big block Corvette that had 3:70 gears with the original dated rear end. The POP called out 3:70 gears but the tank sticker called out 3:36 gears.

A '70 Chevelle with factory A/C,so that would've meant mandatory tinted windows.
It was holding 4 clear windows.2 on the passenger side & 2 on the drivers that appeared to be original & dated to the car.

My uncle has a 67 RS 327 275hp 4 speed car with 4.10s and a 12 bolt from the factory. The car is Deep water blue with light blue standard interior. The trim tag states the paint code as being EE, but the car had a factory white vinyl roof. The car still has all the original vinyl roof trim studs on the car.
