William (10/10RSZ) and I picked this car up from Tony Nausieda (SCUNCIO) a while back… We are finally getting around to getting it well on the way to being completed.
Here are a few details…
1969 Z28 Lemans Blue and Black
Early Production 10D
Non style trim, Rear antenna, console,
51 k miles, Born with DZ Engine M20 Trans and BV 4.10 rear, original interior except package tray and carpet and all glass except front.
2 owner car before restoration began.
2nd owner continues to be employed as a mechanic at the same Ford Dealership since he bought it in 1970. (Ford motor Credit financed the car) After running into a ditch in 1973 he purchased a grille, Lower Valence and then parked it in his garage.
Coming out of the hibernation…

http://inlinethumb40.webshots.com/3495/2351460210059464720S425x425Q85.jpg
Ordered with Rear Ant and Spoiler… The Ant option took precedence so when the car came in the owner had the dealer add a spoiler.

Thanks for the kind words from all, William and I had intended on having it done a year ago... however (insert multitude of reasons here). That being said I can't wait till it's done, being very original and complete has made it quite a bit of fun to restore.
With regards to Lemans Blue... I have had 4 or 5 LB cars so I am kinda partial to them. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

LeMans Blue is my favorite shade of blue. I used to own a real LB/blue standard white stripe Z. I live fairly close to you, Asheville, N.C. Do you plan on showing any this year? I would love to see it when finished. Also, is the Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet show going to happen ever again?
firstgenaddict
04-12-2010, 07:15 AM
May or may not show it, I am sure it will be driven some.
I doubt Whitaker will happen again.
From my understanding the City didn't like it at the main dealership on Laurens Rd because of the traffic problems.
Mike... the subframe isn't in yet, but here are a few photos with the garage lights off and just natural light.

I'll get a better picture. They are as shipped from Norwood, I used a custom mixed black with Lemans blue overspray on the bottom and white overspray on the firewall.

that would be awesome, I'm about to spray my floors and have been torn, my current thought is black/gray PPG Concept GM underhood mix and trying to decide on overspray, your car looks awesome

Mixing the paints has been the most time consuming part of this project. Thank God the black car is around for direct reference.
firstgenaddict
05-14-2010, 08:33 AM
After prep I shot the black mix, 2nd was gray primer over spray, finally I shot the Lemans Blue overspray.
***If the car were a style trim car it would have then had Blacked out rockers the over spray would have then covered a good bit of the Blue and gray over spray.

Thank you, these pictures are very helpful, I can now see why the blue overspray appeared gray, I would never have thought to use gray primer over the black yet under overspray color.

The Original Sub frame bolts and Washer set ups, this is being discussed on the CRG as well as it seems the expensive repro's are not correct.
Original front sub frame to body mounting bolt assembly (68 and EARLY 69... change in the AIM is Sept.
RBW BOLT - lock washer - Spring washer (silver) - Flat Washer which appears to be heat treated steel.
The undercoating was shot at an almost perpendicular angle to the bolt head from about 9. The swath on the back was blocked from the undercoating and subsequently rusted.
The cupped washer was covered however after flexing during removal it flaked off easily.

Thanks Sam, I am an Artist (draw and paint) and for some reason I seem to be able to mix colors to achieve the exact finish(shade, color, tint, etc) I am seeking.
I like things to not only look correct where you see, I like them to look right when you take it apart to service the vehicle. I dislike taking things apart and finding whole inner doors painted body color or tape lines everywhere, whole underdashes painted black etc OR painted/NASTY Window regulators, makes me wonder what other short cuts were taken?
Ideally when I restore a car I would like it to gain the patina the original finishes gained through time, however on a much less aggressive (retarded) basis, if we restored cars as they left the factory, (even using 50 year old technology) and took care of them as WE do, they would last hundreds of years.

It's a COPO 427 car that spent most of its life in Ypsilanti, MI. Was in a shed from 1971-2005 and needs pretty much everything. It has about 9800 miles on the odo but you'd never know it!

Looks just great James. Thanks for the updates.
My thots on repros: the company "attempting" a repro makes the conscious effort <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif to first determine the total number of ways they will deviate from a correct original piece and then they multiply that by a factor of at least 7. That way they ensure that the piece will only look like it could possibly fit so that they get the poor unsuspecting sap to buy the worthless piece of sh*t. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/no.gif
There - that feels better now. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/eek.gif

The problem is that the person approving the prototype for production never has to use the piece.

Side note: They also said on the Soft Ray glass theirs is green Soft Ray not blue.
Anyone dealt with them before?

Thanks Sam,
It is very nice glass, and the price wasn't too bad, 350 or so for the front.
and yes... I tried to stay away from being labeled "Restoration Graffiti." thank you for noticing. I also stayed away from CAST BLAST and paint on cast parts which in turn made me fall in love with and invest heavily in Boeshield and Cosmoline.
I more or less replicated the survivors I have seen and photographed.

James - what an impressive resto. I see what you are trying to do with "no cast blast" and the like. AZ wx allows for un covered metal for the most part and I just love the real patina of metal if at all possible.
Thanks for keeping us updated!

Not only do they look more authentic, they age like they should.
When the rest of the car ages and gains the beautiful patina like it should, a resto with painted cast parts looks like a resto with painted cast parts...
IMHO the ultimate compliment would be if someone looks at a car I restored and second guesses as to whether it is a survivor or not.

I am very familiar with BoeShield T-9. I want to also recommend
a comparable product called FLUID FILM.
FLUID FILM has a unique woolwax(lanolin)formula containing no
solvents to evaporate. Always active, it will not become tacky,
providing long lasting protection to all metals.
FLUID FILM has been independantly lab tested for 7 weeks and was found to be far superior to other products. Unfortunately this lab test did not include BoeShield T-9.
Check out www.fluid-film.com (http://www.fluid-film.com) for those that believe my recommendation.
Yes I am a dealer. I would deliver aeresol cans at the 2011 MCACN, at my cost if I could get 12 pre-paid orders to cover the product and shipping of one case to the show.

We put the exhaust on the car today, there are a few differences in the rear hangers. One difference is quite significant as it actually causes the hanger to sit lower by approx 1/2".
Does anyone else have original exhaust hangers off an Early Chambered car?
Here are the originals and repro's shown together...

I let Eric know I had the originals and offered them before the system was built as we discussed the white belting. I had no idea, (I'm betting that they didn't know either) the arched rubber piece was a difference in hangers.
Dan,
10D Fisher Body date - Chevrolet finished first week of Nov.
I think your car is a few days earlier... wish this one had your interior!
BTW Eric Gardner asked if I had the clamps from the over axle hangers, I didn't, if you do have them we would like to know if they are as indicated in the assembly manual (strap type) or if they are the standard type clamp.
Thanks
James

There was a Dusk Blue on blue std 11c or 11d I missed a few years ago... 547xxx was the Vin. I should have followed up as I could have bought it right... real right. Even though all the drive train was gone and it needed a total resto it had the original paint and stripes, 4 original dated AD's, white cowl, 2 pc rotors, off white molded silver grille etc.
It showed up on the CRG right after I missed it and I confirmed it as the real deal for the guy out of Ohio.

Looks great James!
How did you achieve the low light shots?
firstgenaddict
02-11-2013, 04:09 AM
Camera and lighting trick, they are actually not low light, they are fast shutter speed...
I used a manual focus & my Fstop set to 2.8 - 3.2 (open lens) depending on zoom - using a macro zoom lens with the light meter set for spot and make sure to turn continuous to OFF (so I can pick and HOLD different lighting by aiming in either the shadows or into the highlights or anywhere in between until I get the contrast levels I am seeking.)
There are (6) 4 foot tubes in 2700k 5000k and 6000k color wavelengths (warm, cool, and daylight) (2) 8 foot tubes - Plus spot. The second picture below shows the different bulb colors in the reflection.

ALSO:
I set my camera to bracket my photos almost every time I pick it up. (what ever exposure time I choose the camera shoots PLUS one overexposed and one underexposed) 3 shots every shutter click. Sometimes there are details you can't pick up that you would like to be able to see.

James - On the subject of "bracket photo", what is the advantage of it over manipulating a single digital photo with software (i.e. photoshop)?
thanks

Photoshop is a modern day dark room if the image is too over exposed or too under exposed you still won't get the definition in the shadows or highlights they will be washed out or dark. Bracketing allows you multiple shots in slightly different light levels, the more you can choose from the more likely you are to get the shot.

I shoot close to 100+ frames almost every time I take the camera out sometimes 1000, different F stops, slightly different angles. The mistake most people make with photography is being stingy with the shutter... with digital photos you no longer have to worry about film and developing costs... shoot away.
For photography classes in art school we were required to turn in 100 negs for every finished printed Photo...the professor wanted us to get used to shooting everywhere.
I had no idea I had even got this photo until I looked later, the bee flew in an out while the camera was knocking out photos...

Sam,
Most modern day DSLR's have the bracekting function. Heck, even my 2004 Fuji had it. All you do is have to program it. In the old days (Like James says) it was much more expensive to bracket your photos (film costs). The more pictures that you shoot, the better chances are that you'll get the right one.
HDR photography is a form of bracketing as well, the middle and higher end DSLR cameras take one over exposed, one under exposed and one correctly exposed shot and combines them. Read HERE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_imaging)

I have to say there are some pretty interesting and funny comments in this thread. First of all the car is absolutely gorgeous!!! I applaud you for not adding the cowl hood and spoilers. Most people (those who THINK they know it all) would've added those items and say all '69 Zs would/should have them. I love the "natural look" of the early cars with the flat hoods---very unassuming. Second, back on page 6 some funny quotes were made concerning aftermarket items. Truthfully, I think I agree for the most part---usually the makers think "close is good enough" AND the makers are NOT the installers and couldn't give a crap whether the stuff fits or not. There are a few private guys making parts and since those parts aren't mass produced and since those guys ARE the installers THOSE PARTS FIT!!! Some of the repro stuff is in it's third and later generation of production which sometimes helps and sometimes doesn't.
GREAT CAR!!! Congratulations!!!
