Since noon today all airtraffic is grounded in norhtern Europe due to an volcanic eruption on Iceland. The ash cloud has spread over northern europe. The risk of malfunctioning engines on aircrafts has forced all airports to close down. No one knows for how long this will be, could be weeks or even months before the situation is back to normal.

In history this has happened before, in the 17th century one Icelandic volcano was active for over a year blasting ashes in to the sky and caused a climatic change for several years.

And we're to fly into Dublin on the 30th. Might be a slight delay due to volcanoes. Bet no one saw that one coming.

I still have a jar of Mount Saint Helens ash that my parents collected years back during a trip when they got stranded in the same airport shutdown situation. It's part of my daughter's geology collection now.

My wife and I are flying into Paris,I hope,on the 24th.I'm a bad flyer as it is.Didn't think I'd be worrying about volcano ash though.Plan on going up to Normandy and visiting Juno and Omaha beaches. And pay my respects at the cemetaries.
