Has there ever been any particular reason for them not to reproduce the Uniroyal tires? I could use a set. I wouldn't risk driving very far on my old ones.

You will have to contact Coker on that question. The parent companies still require a lot of paperwork, money, etc. for tires too be reproduced with their name on them. Kelsey is exclusive for Goodyear, Coker deals with Michelin on the BFG's and Uniroyals and with Bridgestone on the Firestones. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif

Thanks Rusty - was the DOT date code a standardized (I would think so) format or did each manufacturer have their own system?

Is the "2" at the end of your code for 1972? I think the "AJL7" is Uniroyal's plant. That portion of the code does not appear (nor is there room for it) on my tire. I have been told my tire is for a Jan 70 built car.

Yes it is/was with our COPO car. Our 396 car came with whitewalls but I don't know the brand.

The code on my tires was H0730T ; six digits, same as yours, so I don't know what's "incomplete" http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Maybe you could tactfully suggest that 'Shirley' consult with 'Ken' and see if they can come up with something http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

It's aggravating....I received a very prompt reply and it coincided exactly with what I was told when I bought the tires, so I figured they really had their you-know-what together regarding codes on the older tires. The information in which you have given does not appear to be the DOT number which indicates the week and year the tire was manufactured.

All tires sold in the United States are required to meet the standards established by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Compliance is indicated by the DOT symbol imprinted on the tire's sidewall. Next to the DOT symbol is a code representing the manufacturing plant, the tire size, certain optional information, and the date of manufacture. In a 4 digit code the first 2 digits indicate the week, while the last 2 numbers refer to the year. (For example 4809 means that the tire was produced the 48th week of 2009.) In a 3 digit code the first 2 digits indicate the week, while the last digit represents the year. This designation was used before the year 2000. (For example, 129 means that the tire was produced the 12th week of
1999.) The complete DOT code is required on one sidewall of the tire. A partial DOT code may be seen on the opposite side, however there may be instances where the DOT is only on one sidewall.

The DOT required a TIN (Tire Identification Number) on all tires beginning in 1968, but at that time, the manufacturers were permitted to use their own proprietary coding formats. The regulation was modified in late 1970, and DOT mandated a standard format for the coding beginning in May, 1971, with the last three digits signifying the week of the year and the year. The format was revised again in 1999 so the last <span style="font-weight: bold">four</span> digits signified the date, with the last two being the year.

As far as I know, for the proprietary codings used from 1968-early 1971, only the Goodyear codes are known (thanks to Kelsey Tire).
