I need a color match for the red color of a 60s - 70s era one piece Lakewood Scattershield.

Thanks! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif

Here's what I have now. Photo does not show you the flourescent hue to this paint which I find hard to believe was the original color.

Appreciate it!

call Lakewood. They may give you a rattle can brand and number for you to use. Its not a flourescent hue or tone. Thats for line painting or marking your grass or yard for a dig. HA!

Sam, The one on the Black Survivor looks about the same color as yours, I believe Williams face plate has louvers and not holes.

Louvers in the old days. I never remember holes for air circulation.

I got a reply from Lakewood Tech:

<span style="font-style: italic">Sam, The only information I can find on the &quot;red&quot; color for the bellhousing is Pantone 485. Hopefully any automotive paint supply store will be able to help you with that color. Good luck! Jim</span>

I checked Pantone on the web and there are alpha characters like &quot;C&quot;, &quot;M&quot;, &quot;U&quot; following the 485. what are these referring to and does it pertain to paint? Thanks!

The C, M and U refer to:

C=Coated
U= Uncoated
M=Matte
V=Video

More here:
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Pantone has also renamed the colors in the tables. Pantone 485 is still the same red you’ve always known, but older versions of the various tables used in typical publishing programs like Quark, Illustrator and PhotoShop may have added different tags to the color. You are no doubt familiar with the fact that Pantone 485 has for many years had a coated and uncoated version, logically called Pantone 485C and Pantone 485U. But, you may encounter Pantone 485CV, CVC or CVU in the tables of older versions of the publishing programs. CVC and CVU were suffixes for &quot;Computer Video Coated&quot; and &quot;Computer Video Uncoated&quot; to signify that this was a video simulation of a Pantone Color. This suffix would sometimes be truncated by the publisher, which is why it would sometimes be represented as 485 CVC in one software program and 485 CV in another.

Once again, what Pantone attempted to do is make things simpler and more logical. The printed color guides and the color in the digital tables now match. The color tables in the latest versions of Quark, Illustrator and PhotoShop reflect this. Because the new guides are printed on Coated, Uncoated and Matte papers, the codes are either C or U or M. In the short term, of course, this adds to the number of possible codes since many programs which have not yet been updated are still in wide use.</div></div>

Hope this helps!

Thanks Bruce. I saw the reference to those descriptors but wasn't sure what that meant for painting metal. I think those letters are for printing, but am not sure! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/crazy.gif

I'll get w/ Space Age Paint store tomorrow and see what they say. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif

Sam,

I wonder if the Lakewood Scattershield red paint would be the same as Lakewood Engine Stand red paint from the same era? My guess is that it is one and the same <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/scholar.gif I have an original paint Lakewood Engine stand- vintage 1972 - that I am the original owner of....it's here at my house, and you are welcome to take any or all of it to match the paint.

Bill's offer sounds like your best bet, and if it would help, I have a half dozen or so Pantone Color Guides here at work. I'll grab the oldest one and the most current and take them home tonite. I have tons of rattle cans in the garage so maybe I can find something that is an acceptable match.

If you find a PMS Guide you DO want to use the 485C for your matching. I've gone the opposite route a few times and, on painted surfaces especially, you'll get a closer match with the Coated samples.

Or, ............. you could call Howie and have him mix up a pint for you. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

2nd response from Lakewood - at least i know his source is the engineering drawings which should be a reliable source:

Jim - thanks for your reply. Very helpful. One last question. I notice that Pantone typically has a letter (or two) following the numeric color designation, i.e. Pantone 485 C or M or U. What would be appropriate for my use (painting my Scattershield)? Thanks, Sam

<span style="font-weight: bold">Reply from Rep:</span>
Sam, Unfortunately the only color code listed on the engineering drawing is 485. Jim

Here is a Vintage Lakewood scattershield that was painted Blue-it was on my '79 Trans am (I pulled the motor to do a &quot;DAY2&quot; build on my '67 firebird..)I would like to paint it back to the Factory Hue-Did you find a color close in A Spray Can???

Hector - I called our local paint shop in Mesa, called Space Age Paints. They can mix Pantone 485 C in a rattle can or in a mix for your spraying sytem. They said they could do it in base coat or single stage. They quoted a BASF brand paint, but could mix it using a bunch of other brands too. I'd recommend calling a local paint store and see what they say.

Color look's good and correct. When it is on the car,no light will shine on it,it would be hard to tell if it is off a shade or two. I would go with it.
