View Full Version : Taught the teen daughter how to drive today!

First time ever behind the wheel, other than driving the lawnmower for the past 2 years. She actually did really well, other than obsessively concentrating on the turn signal and ignoring the brake pedal at times.

I had her drive her great-grandmother's Firebird that has been in the family since new. She was actually named after her Great Grandmother.

The really bizarre thing is that Grandma Rose use to have this weird habit of using her left hand to activate the console mounted shifter whenever she'd drive. And what happens when dear daughter gets in the car? She starts it up and then reaches over with her left hand to activate the console shifter! Cue the Twilight Zone theme now....

Here's a shot of her very first burn out on the gravel parking lot of her school....(allegedly unintentional, she claims). <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif

That's funny about the left-handed shifting! So when will she get "Hemi-privileges", Steve?

Ha! She asked if I would teach her how to drive a manual transmission.

I think first, she needs to master using the turn signal and brakes at the same time, before we throw another pedal in the mix.

Cool stuff Steve!.
Any English roots and British cars in your family history?.

I'm through two of the six kids driving so far and laid stick cars on them within the first few drives..
After a few stalling starts and rough shifts they get onto things quickly!.

Oh, what fond memories that brings back. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/crazy.gif When it was time for my twinkies to start driving, (they're 30 now) only one of them attempted to drive my three on the tree Silverado. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/no.gif That didn't go well and opened the door for my first truck with an automatic.

Needless to say, boys are different. Never say " gas it up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyk1w2uKOag&NR=1) a little".

Good Luck Steve!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Small world...my 14 yr old daughter got a dose of driving lessons just last week. It wasn't in anything cool (a 496 Suburban and then a Duramax dually!), but still a lesson. She's started talking about jobs & car payments, but she's apparently inherited the muscle car gene, because she keeps mentioning new Camaros & new Mustangs... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/crazy.gif

You wimp Chris. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif Let the kid have a little fun. I couldn't even see his leg shaking and he seemed to do pretty good other than maybe a little clutch slipage. Let'er rip Mike! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/burnout.gif

That's funny Rick, it was only the third or forth time driving the Chevelle.

After two months he was catching a little rubber in second (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4INE7AFcc8E) <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/3gears.gif
