View Full Version : Exhaust clamp size.

If my exhaust pipes are 2 1/4" O.D. would I use a 2 1/4" clamp? The muffler that you insert the 2 1/4" exhaust pipe into will obviously have a larger OD than 2 1/4" - I want to make sure that a clamp described as 2 1/4" will accomodate this.

Thanks! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif

Anyone use Rick's (http://www.rickscamaros.com/camaro-exhaust-muffler-clamp-cradle-style-steel-2-1-4-1967-2010.html) or Steve's (http://shop.stevescamaroparts.com/Exhaust-Pipe-Clamp-2-1-4-Bare-Steel-120020.htm?categoryId=-1) Camaro clamps that are claimed to be repro OEMs?

My 'educated guess' is that the specified clamp size is designed for whatever outside diameter surface it will be clamping on. In other words, if you have a 2 1/4&quot; OD exhaust pipe and it will be going inside a muffler inlet or outlet, and you will be squeezing the OD of the muffler inlet/outlet, you will need a larger clamp than 2 1/4&quot;. That's my guess, and I'm stickin' to it <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif

So Bill, are you saying a 2 1/4&quot; clamp is for 2&quot; exhaust pipe?

Sam
I'am thinking you need some old enlisted guy to clue you in, or check with Ed, he is Italian, he will know what to do.

Thanks Dave - I think I remember you introducing him. Chris - that is NOT funny. Quit it!!!! Mikey is just pressing my button(s)! (BTW- the Italian from Gilbert, AZ did NOT know either - he just started babbling about millimeters &amp; metric-this and centimeters that and all his words ended in &quot;-ini&quot;. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif)

I guess that's what I would be saying, since AFAIK exhaust clamps are only incremented in 1/4&quot; graduations.

FWIW - I talked to a muffler shop manager today and he stated that industry standard is that <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="text-decoration: underline">exhaust pipe uses OD </span></span>to indicate its size for clamps and <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="text-decoration: underline">mufflers use ID</span></span>. So a 2 1/4&quot; exhaust clamp will fit over a muffler inlet/outlet with a 2 1/4&quot; ID. In other words the 2 1/4&quot; clamp will accomodate the larger (actually measured at 2 3/16&quot;) outside diameter of the muffler inlet/outlet.

Anybody buy Ricks or Steves clamps pictured above?

Thanks

Sam, how much additional do you add for the muffler bearings?

I hear these take up quite a bit of additional room underneath, let alone for the increase exhaust size.

Uh, Sam....last time I checked, 2 3/16&quot; was actually <span style="font-style: italic"><span style="font-weight: bold">smaller</span></span> than 2 1/4&quot; <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/scholar.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/haha.gif

Try the 2 4/16th clamps - i hear they fit better than the 2 1/4 clamps!!!!!
