M22 TRANS DATE

I LOOKED AT A 69 CAMARO X22 CAR TODAY. CAR HAS BEEN SEATING FOR ABOUT 15 YEARS ALL DATES LOOK GOOD BUT THE 4 SPEED IS A M22 P8S16C DATED NOV 16 OF 68 HAS THE VIN STAMPED ON IT ALSO THE CAR IS A 02D BUILD COULD THE TRANS BE THAT EARLY FOR THAT BUILD ??

It may be difficult but a good photo of the trans stamping is needed to render an opinion.

Having said that two things stand out.

At that time Muncies were stamped with the last digit of the model year. The stamp should be 'P9S16C' not P8. A Nov 16 trans in Feb built car is odd but M22s were rare [2,117] in '69s. I know of an 01C '69 with an Oct 19 M22.

A P8S16 dated Muncie was accually built Nov. 16th of 1967 for use in a 1968 model year car...

The A-B-C ratio code didn't start til Oct of the 1968 callender year (1969 model year) so the P8S16C is either a restamp, or some P#'s have a small what looks like a lower case c at the end, but if you look close its more like 3 sides of a square...

Either way any Muncie dated P8XX is correct for a 1968 model year only... Crash

TAKING A PICTURE WOULD BE VERY HARD TO DO I HAD TO SCRAPE OFF GREESE AND CRUD TO SEE THE NUMBERS LAYING ON MY BACK DONT THINK IT IS A RESTAMP ? SO THE STAMP P8S16 DOES NOT MEAN IT WAS BUILT IN NOV OF 68 ? I KNOW M22 WAS RARE SO I THOUGH IT WAS POSSABLE TO RUN THAT FAR BACK ?

1968 and older Muncies used nuts and washer to hold the shift levers onto the studded shift shafts sticking out of the trans...
1969 and late Muncies used bolts to attach the shift levers...

At the end of the 1968 model year any left over Muncies would have been put into the replacement parts system, NOT used for 1969 production(shifter won't interchange)...

Sounds like an obvious restamp. 1969 cars always use the P9 code, model year, not actual year. Shift linkage also changed for '69 using bolts instead of studs on the side cover. #306 on the side cover. '68 used a #685 side cover.
