Rob and ventured out to Smokin’ MoKan raceway yesterday for their annual nostalgia event with the Yenko Deuce.
Since it was a nostalgia event, transbrakes were not allowed, so it was old school footbraking. Normally no big deal to me, as that is how I race all of our cars, but I knew this would be tougher with a high reving, low torque SBC.
We felt good after our first pass, even with low track temp, right out of the box, she ran a 10.85 @ 122. and change with a nice 1.58 60’. Unfortunately that would be our best pass of the day. Seems as the track temp rose, and we were able to get more bite, that actually hurt our 60’s, as the ole SBC would bog a tad coming out of the hole. Looks like when footbraking, we need a little bit of tire spin to get the RPMs up enough for the SBC to start making power/torque.
First round of eliminations not a great pass, but good enough to take the win light. Second round I knew would be tough, as I was giving up almost 5 seconds on the tree, and being the other car was a high dial in, most likely would be close to his 15.60 dial in. Sure enough, a 15.62 on a 15.60. I did everything I could, leaving with my best RT of the day with a .085, best MPH ever at 123 and change, but lost by .008s, as the motor really bogged off of the line, for a 1.70. 60’.
All and all though, a great day at the race track, with a lot of nice fans, racers and of course cool cars. The crowd there seemed to enjoy watching the Yenko run as much as we did racing it.
