Does anybody have any photos of the 1970 Firebird that was built into a phase 3 car by a Motion Employee back in the early 70's and featured in a magazine?

Thanks, but no,that wasnt it. The car was a 70 style,It looked to be black with a single white stripe down the center that wrapped around the back and down the sides(the article was black and white). It had a low 1970 Camaro spoiler and L-88 hood, and had a 454(maybe 427)phase 3 engine in it with headers and mufflers with turn downs. It was built by one of the techs at Motion as his personal car. I belive the guys last name was Sanders. It was featured on one of the supercar sites a while backand I had the magazine with the car in it,but I no longer have it.

"slide negative woopsy" very common with lay-out people who couldn't tell Pontiac from Pinto.

Thats the car. I own a 73 Firebird with a 427 bigblock,L88 hood and for a while I had the low spoiler on it. As you could imagine this car influenced me. Not many people knew it even existed. Thanks.

Thanks. If you have the rest of the article iit would be great. I have been jonesing to paint my car black with pearl white Motion stripe and put the low wing back on it. Like II said, this car was one of the things that kept me wanting to build my Firebird.

I did a Zaba seach of Ronald Saunders from New York last night and came up with a lotf hits. There were one or two that were in the very close vicinity of Baldwin LI,and many of them overall were in their 60's. I am thinking of dropping a few bucks to contact a few of them.

Here are some pics of my car right now

I run a real 1965 dated 427 with GM l88 replacement heads and a real GM L88 cam from 1969. The car ran a best of 10.49 thru the mufflers at 3475#. The wheels always come up.

Back in the day I ran it as a full race car with fiberglass nose and doors and lexan windows, but if you look you will see the low Camaro spoiler on the back. The car is now all steel except the hood and front bumper, has a full interior and all real glass ect.

10.49 in good air, high 10.50's all the time. My friend raced Pro Stock and Modified production back in the early 70's and I learned a lot about how his old cars ran. It is a 2 bolt main 427 bored to 439,stock GM crank, manley .250" longer rods,JE 43cc dome pistons(11.2:1 actual compression) the GM L88 replacement heads are out of the box with a bowl blend, and have 2.19/1.88 3/8" stem valves, the cam is actually an old GM #282 grind. Back in the late 60's GM designed a cam for circle track racing 396's that had rectangluar port heads. They took the intake lobe off the L88 cam and put it on both the intake and exhaust with a 106 lobe seperation angle and 106 intake centerline. It put a lot of mid range power into the small engines with the big heads. My friend used a few different versions of the GM cams in his old cars and we decided to try this one in my car after I wiped out a .630" lift race cam. The 1150 Dominator actually started life as an old 6214 IR carb from an old pro stock engine too.
The rest of the combo is a 2 speed powerglide with a super hard hitting 5000 stall convertor, and 4.88 gears with 30" tall tires. Simple as pie and reliable to a fault. I had the exact same combination except for a .600" lift cam in my car for about 700 runs with nothing but oil changes. I even shot it with nitrous and ran well into the 9's a few times. I did nothing to it but changed the oil and when the rods came out the side I just built a new shortblock, even reusing 6 of the pistons. This one only has about 150 runs on it,so it's hardly broken in. Its the right tool for a 7500 rpm job.

One of the coolest things is that when I drop the pipes and drive it to the line, you are actually hearing exactly what a 1970 Pro Stock car sounded like back in the day,7000 rpm burnouts and all.

Hello, I have a 1976 Firebird Formula bought at Benjamin Pontiac,Inc 2 minutes from Baldwin motion performance and I believe it is possibly a "Ratbird" due to the fact it has the L-88 hood,1970 454 LS-6 850 Holley 12 bolt 4:10 rear end, Hurst 4 Speed, M-22 Muncie, the little round low profile air cleaner as seen in other pictures. I'm trying to figure out how I can document this car if it is the real deal? Thanks, Chuck

Motionized ‘70 Firebird as OP and Cars Magazine spread + recent inquiry/posting ‘76 Formula.
Here’s a Black ‘72 that may as well be here w/ the others as below 03/80 Newspaper Ad, noted as Baldwin Motion?
:beers:
