View Full Version : 1969 Chevelle L78 Monaco Orange

I have this on another site but thought I would run it here too.

This is a friend's L78 Chevelle that he bought new in 1969. It's the first time the car has seen daylight in 30 years. He had someone tub the car a long time ago and they screwed it up. Basically when the frame was narrowed and they welded it back together, the rear frame rails sat too low. When they bolted the body to the frame, the body buckled on both sides. I need some opinions on how to fix it. It obtains the original Monaco Orange paint on the car. I hate to see it get painted if it's not necessary.

He currently doesn't have the original motor. He let a friend use it years ago and he blew it up. He has spoken to the guy recently and he thinks he might have it tucked away in his garage still.

I know I need to get better pictures and will as soon as I can. He took it out of his garage and put it at another location and I need him to take me there sometime soon.

Thanks, Kurt

Thats awesome!!

Sounds crazy but would bolting the body to an original unmolested frame work? Either bolting it down as is or by adding shims to the outer body mounts to pull the center down and relieve the stress creases?

Cool car! I thought the white side stripe was the default color for Monaco Orange w/o vinyl top. Am I wrong?

That car looks awesome. I would a good frame straightening shop could work their magic on this body. Keep us posted on your progress.

I will give all the ideas to Jerry and see what happens.

As far as the black stripe, all I can tell you is this cars paint/stripes are original to the car. It also came without the back tail panel being painted black.

Are those the original stripes on the car?? If so, look at the length difference from where the striping ends on both front fenders...

Here are some more pictures that was taken the same day. The damage on both quarters can be seen pretty good in a couple of the pictures.

Notice the tail panel is not painted black. He painted a black lace design on it. 20022 original miles!

Get a new frame, relieve the stress and find a very skilled PDR guy. Neat find. Everything's fixable.

Very cool '69! I agree with the above, find a frame for it.

A factory original frame will take the stress off. It will likley take some shimming to get the bow out of it.

I personally am dead against painting the car if it's not necessary. The bottom line is, it's Jerry's car and his decision. That's why I put this question on here and another site to get a better idea from people who have possibly dealt with these kinds of things before.

I do want to mention that the car is NOT for sale and that it does obtain it's original paint although I will ask Jerry if the rear quarters have been massaged but I don't believe so.

Thanks again for all the comments, keep them coming, Kurt

Agreed....IMO, that would be the first course of action to pursue, providing there are no cracks in the paint.

I hope it's just a reflection, but in that shot of the passenger side on the trailer, it almost looks like the rocker and the lower rear section of the door are also buckled <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/shocked.gif

I'm betting that Jerry wishes he had that whole tubbing thing to do over again <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif

Bill, there's no cracks in the paint and you are seeing a reflection on the passenger side rocker. There are the two kinks, one on each quarter. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Let's not forget that in addition to needing a frame, there has probably been some sheetmetal surgery to the inner rear wheel tubs for those larger rear slicks. Many times when this is done, a body mount on each side is removed and the un-supported body can buckle in the quarter panels.

69 Post Sedan
10-21-2010, 01:09 AM
Mark, you are correct. The original wheel wells have been removed and the tubs have been installed. They have to come out and new w/w's need to be installed.

I mentioned this car, and it's problem, to the guys over at Nostalgic Autobody. They think the car should be able to be repaired with minimal paint work, but obviously would need to see it firsthand.

I also see no reason a skilled person with an eye towards preservation couldn't save the paint given what has been discussed.

Love the car! Hell no should it be repainted! Mount it on a new frame, go with a day two look for the wheels and tires... add some traction bars and certainly ... keep the graphics!!!

There are a lot of L78 Chevelles out there but how many with that look and some cool history!

Looking forward to seeing the progress on this car!!!

Here is an update pictures of Jerry's Chevelle. They went to Arizona and picked up a 1969 frame, took the body off the old frame and welded it to a jig and started to install the new trunk. While cutting out the old tubs, the body would make noises as if it were relieving pressure.

They had a former employee from the GM Janesville plant start working on the wrinkles. I think the pictures will speak for themselves.

There are over 40 pictures....so enjoy....I know I did.

BTW....Boomer took the pictures! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/headbang.gif

The guy only worked on the car for about an hour and a half and said he was too sore to continue so he had to stop. He wants the car back to detail it a little more.

This is being done at TLC Restorations and is owned by Bob "Ripp" Rippberger. Ripp said the jig was rocking all around as it was being worked on.

As of right now....the plan is to letter the passenger side just like the drivers side is, install a "CE" 4 bolt main block that Jerry has with all the original heads, intake, carb, dist., trans. Install a different rear end for now, interior and get it running for next year.

Ok....here's the kicker, since Jerry's rear end was narrowed, I found a 12 bolt locally for sale on Craigslist yesterday. Rip and Jerry go look at it tonight and it's a KK code. What are the chances of that??????? So, the original rearend will go in Jerry's garage and this one goes in the car. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Is that the original rosewood wheel? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/no.gif

If so, please ask him to remove it and store it somewhere safe during the restoration. I've had way too many origInal wheels ruined at bodyshops, and it pains me to see that perfect wheel sitting there. Whether its cracking from the dry conditions, or paint/solvent on someones hands, or just heaving on the wheel to turn the car in the shop, it is just waiting to get damaged.

I'd be happy to send him a crappy loaner wheel, free of charge.

Nice progress and looking good. I noticed in your last photo above that your friend is putting on those adapters that relocate the upper rear-control-arm mounting point higher (shortens the instant center). The David Bunn LS6 (see avatar) used a similar Lakewood piece which was permitted in the stock class that he raced in. Were those brackets in the photo used on the L78 back in the day?

Yes Sam, Jerry had them installed on the original rearend. They can be seen on the original frame/rearend on page 4.

I'm not sure if he's going to use them on the current rearend. I kinda hope he doesn't as they will have to drill holes in the webbing and it's a real "KK" rearend.

My challenge with my Chevelle is that I had to eliminate wheelhop. Is there a way you guys got rid of that without a set of ladder bars or "no-hop" bars?

Salvatore

air bags worked well back then also. Some 50/50 shocks too.

The no-hop Lakewoods do not require drilling - they are bolted on as can be seen in the photo above. Another thing you can try is to change your rear bushings to polyurethane to minimize flex (not period correct though).

With street tires.... I used a set of QA1 12 position adjustable shocks. I painted them black so they're not a noticable. That eliminated all wheelhop. When I switched to Mickey Thompson ET Street tires.....the wheelhop came back.

The bottom line it the upper control arms MUST be higher on the rearend then the body.

Hope that helps, Kurt

I would think an aluminum bushing would be an acceptable vintage option. The Lakewood bars I bought did require drilling the webbing. Checked the online instructions- note #8

http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/instructions/lak-21609_21610.pdf

I think even if you just tried to pinch the webbing, it would damage it similarly enough or more than the drilled hole.

As I understand it, the grippier that the tires are the further back the instant center needs to be (or the higher the rear contol arms need to be attached).

----Sam,,,Instant center ideally should be app. right under the drivers seat to under his feet. Using the 70 Chevelle as an example, there actually is no instant center as the cars are delivered. The upper arms actually angle away from the lower, longer arms. Thats why theres tire hop. Hop-stop bars reorient the upper bars rear pivot point on the pumpkin upward to gain an instant center. Install them and hop should go away. Other stuff can probably mitigate wheel hop (air bags, etc.) but I think they are bandaids. If someone really wants to race with GMs midsize rear suspension, drill the holes. They can always get patched. Or get another housing. Really good 60 foots are out there waiting......Bill S

The Ram Air IV Gto from Harrisburg that was raced just had the air bags inside the springs.

Thanks Bill. I did not know that the uppers and lowers actually diverge. I guess you would know a thing or two about racing 70 A bodies (LS6s to boot). <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif

Yesterday they had a guy come in and letter the passenger side to match the driver's side.

Looks great. Are those Super Comp headers? New or vintage?

They are the original ones that Jerry used back in the day.

Kurt

EDIT: I guess I should say "I believe" they are originals. Jerry kept almost everything for that car.

EDIT: Rip just told me that they are vintage headers.

Wow, the car is coming together nicely. Engine bay is looking real old school race-ready! What brand and size ar those rear slicks? Wheel offset? I noticed the oversized pulley for the alternator. Is that to reduce draw from the engine?

Here are some pictures of Jerry's car at a dragstrip. It's hooking......that's for sure.

Sam, I'm not sure what size the tire/rims are. The bigger pulley on the alternator was to keep it from spinning too fast at high RPM's. They don't charge real good at idle from what I've been told though.

Dan, the paint used on Jerry's motor was Seymour Paint. Rip wasn't real happy with it but it's all he had at the time. He said he usually uses with Bill Hirsch paint.

It's not the best picture but here is Jerry behind the wheel of his Chevelle after sitting in his garage since 1975. He said it felt like a new car.

Awesome stuff.

Any details on the engine build and what it made on the dyno?

Eric, the motor was built to stock specs except for the intake. Jerry even had his original camshaft.

They got 410hp on the dyno.

Is that the set up that he raced back in the day (pre-tubbing) and he was able to yank the fronts with that? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/shocked.gif

Sam, I will ask Jerry but AFAIK, he had a different cam, distributor, and taller gears. I posted a picture of the cam specs that he had in the car at one time on a earlier post. I'm at work so I can't see it to tell you what the spec were.

Kurt

P.S. TLC Restorations (Bob Rippberger) along with Jerry will be showing this car at the MCACN show this November.

Sam, I was at a car show yesterday with Jerry. He said he the car had a Crane Cam (621/646), Edelbrock TR-2 intake, headers and, here's the kicker, 5.36 gears.

Here are a couple of pictures of our cars at the car show.
