View Full Version : my MCACN surprise

In all my running around all weekend this was a huge surprise. Brian and Joe from Supercar Workshop were showing Jeff Murphy's blue ZL1. I stopped by to see it and Brian and Joe are showing me the cool hood on the car etc. Then Brian lifts the car cover off the car next to it saying this is a little somethin else we have been working on. They have managed to sneak my 69 Yenko in without me having a clue. This car was a painted shell a few weeks ago that had just come from Frank Arone's shop.
Over the last maybe two months a piece of it's history puzzle has been solved by of all things, a flat trailer tire on Brians rig near a small PA town. Turns out the guy that owned it and raced it back in the day is still around. He came to the Supercar Workshop last week to visit his old car and loan some old pics, racing jacket etc. Joe and Brian reproduced the lettering on the side on magnetic signage to show how it looked back in the day. Dick had bought the car used as a bank repo I think in 69. His friend worked at the bank and told him about it since he was a drag racer. Price the bank wanted was 1400.00. Dick only had 800.00. Bank guy and Dick end up rolling down the windows, flattening the tires, making the car look like crap, then taking pics and sending the pics to bank board. Dick gets the car for 800.00. The Yenko side stripes had already been removed but the edges were still in place in the door jamb area. In the pics Dick loans us you can see it still has the fender pinstripes and bowtie grill emblem. I think this is the only X11 style trim orange Yenko with no vinyl top. In the classic pic of the Yenko's sitting in the toxic lot you can clearly see a orange Yenko,no vinyl top with the fender pinstripes. We figure this is that car. Thanks guys. That was quite the surprise. And thanks Dick for the loan of pics etc. I'm glad you found your old car and got to see it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=download&Number=25356&filename= tn_IMG_1686.JPG http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=download&Number=25357&filename= tn_IMG_1680.JPG http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=download&Number=25358&filename= tn_IMG_1682.JPG http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=download&Number=25361&filename= tn_IMG_1865.JPG http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=download&Number=25362&filename= tn_IMG_1868.JPG http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=download&Number=25363&filename= tn_IMG_1869.JPG

That was a really neat way to display the Yenko's dual personality. I'd keep it that way.......cool Yenko.

Charley,I'm posting your reply to my question I PM'd you about, just because I think it in itself is a great part of the story.

Q-<span style="font-style: italic">How exactly did Brian having a flat trailer tire add to it's history?</span>

A-<span style="font-style: italic">Brian gets a flat, guy stops to help, sends him to shop in town,Yenko resto business comes up,leads to a guy still around that used to drag race a orange Yenko,Brian talks to the guy about his car and tells him he thinks he has his old car in his shop.</span>

Charlie,

I would get some yenko stripes done in the same magnetic form as the lettering. If you can pick and chose, you can go back and forth as you see fit.

Obviously you will need 2 hoods, and 2 intakes/carb setups (if I am correct assuming something was popping out of the hood on that one picture).

I am curious what wheels were on that car when it raced, as the chrome ones used don't match the pics.

One of my favorite cars at the show.

I agree with Stefano...keep it that way! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif

VERY COOL Yenko Charley! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif (and cool story!) Glad Brian got that flat tire so you were able to meet the previous owner and he was able to see the car again!

&quot;FUNSTER&quot;... what a perfect name for YOU! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

Congrats!

Hey Charlie,
Which way did you go with the resto? Either way is cool and unique.
