Just pulled this 66 big block vette race car from a shed near my work. Paperwork says Harry Mann Chevrolet was original dealer. Pretty much as raced, taken off track around 79? Owner said someone named Andy Anderson was the last owner driver of the car. I can email pics right now if someone can post them that would be great, Bruce?? That is if you want to see them <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif Anyone recogonize from So Cal area. Thanks.

Alright, alright I sent them to Dan now the pressure is on him.
It is a coupe. I found the car advertised locally, I mean like 2 miles away, and asked Jim Gessner to get involved. We went to the guys house and looked it over and I had to have it so we made a deal on the spot. It actually is tagged and I drove it to the store a couple of days later. Jim is actually hunting down information now and has a few good leads. All I know is it was a big block, blue on blue and with the help of the NCRS historical service found out it was delivered to Harry Mann Chevrolet in Feb 65. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Hello,
I may have sold him this car as I was a salesman there in 66 while attending school. is the corvet red? The only three I sold that year were red. I also lived in Pa for awhile. Treesdale CC, Pa, just north east of Pittsburgh. Regretfully, I do not have any memorabilia, just fond memories.

Car has a 350 in it now, pretty stout, last owner added front window trim and rear bumpers. Car has dated glass and orig trans, pretty crazy.

Darrell, that is cool you used to work at Harry Mann, probably some guys here that would like to talk to you. My car started life as Nassau Blue, same color as now.

Hey Bruce, have you given any thought to sneaking out Saturday morning early and going to Donut Derelicts? I have a '69 Camaro in a storage garage at Ellis/Beach right around the corner from there. You could be back in your jammies at your sis' before anyone missed you...

Thanks guys
I was hoping to find out previous owner history and race history and go from there. Jim Gessner and others are helping but a lot of people were busy for the holiday. I was hoping it would jog a memory here. Hung my Harry Mann plate frame today and a black and gold plate I had been saving for this occasion. OMG. I want to widen a set of vintage torque thrust D's, or if someone has a magnesium set to donate <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Great find, Jim is the guy to speak with. Since the car was apparently raced in the area you found it, information should be available. Does it have a Madellian certifying it as a vintage race car? If not you can work towards that.

Did you only work at Harry Mann in 66? My grandfather worked at Harry Mann as a used car salesman in the 60's and early 70's. I wonder if you remember him (Robert Hutcheson)?

----Yup, Daniel,,,That coupe either is a 67 or has 67 front fender scoops, and I think I can just barely make out the center back-up light, as well as the hood. All can and have been changed on mid-year Corvettes since forever! Love those fender flares. Cool Vette!!!......Bill S

I never noticed before, but maybe that is what the AP stands for on both cars. I talked to Andy a few years ago. He has a racing brake busness (http://www.porterfield-brakes.com/). He may know if it was his car or not and may also have pictures.

427freak
11-30-2010, 08:36 PM
The AP is for the production class that the car will compete in. With the Corvettes I think the small block cars raced under B producton, and the big blocks raced under A production class. Based on engine sze I believe. This car was was a big block as the one pictured so they would both be A Production cars. I have sent pics to Andy Porterfield. Lives nearby, so we will see.

Sir, You may already be aware, but H & R Dyno was located in near-by Covina, CA. They were on San Bernardino Road at the NE corner of Irwindale Ave. They overhauled the 302 in a 69 Z that I bought local in Covina in 1978. H & R left that location in the early 80's. Not sure if they closed shop altogether, or moved. Never heard that name again until now. Regards... 302Z

Thank you for posting. The person that tows cars for me walked in this morn and saw the car and told me exactly what you just said. He used to hang out there in the 70's and remembers the car. He might have pics. 2 people have told me that the 'H' stands for Owen Hixon (raced corvettes) and he was partnered in the business. I have an idea who the 'R' was but have not confirmed yet. He also told me that Carl Smith hung out there and he did a lot of drag racing in the area. Says Paint by Carl on the back...hummm
By the way, couldn't help myself and bought a set of Magnesium 15x10 American TT D's. Can't wait to get them on the car.

We found the name of the original owner this past week. Now we are looking for both #1 and #2. We also found a fellow who raced "against" this car in 1979. The owner Dana bought it from purchased it WITHOUT engine in 1983, and it sat in his "barn" until 2003 when he put a 350/350 Corvette engine in it and got it registered for the street. Neat thing is, the car still has vin tag and trim tag, and has never been 'massaged' by bubba. We hope owner #2 has the log books. Porterfield or Chuck Hance may remember.

TimG

Jim, the trim tag and VIN are great. So many of these cars were theft recovery cars that turned into race cars. All that stuff was pulled off on many.

It seems like the supply of story telling racers has not dried up. GREAT find!

While this car [pictured, if I can figure out how] is not in the same class as the one you found, I had lots of fun with it back in the late 70s...

Yes I know Jim. He actually went with me when I bought the car. He is Vettefinderjim above in this thread. That is an awesome site he has going. We are still putting together the history of this car. I did get my Magnesium TT D's for it. Early Christmas present to myself. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Took it to Baker's the other day to get a burger, a guy comes out and says " you don't see one of those driving around every day". Fun car

AP is an SCCA class. 427 vette's Cobra's the 904 Porsche probably because it was mid engine were in that class

Does it have a roll bar? If so look for a stamped number or tag. All the cars I have had that ran in SCCA or the Trans Am series had stamps .

Start searching for programs from Riverside races or whatever tracks you think the car was at...

Here is a good site for Riverside stuff

A friend was at the store yesterday looking at the Vette and he says " Did you ever notice the name on the passenger door that has been rubbed off " It clearly says Andy Brown on the door. If anybody knows anything I would appreciate it. Thanks

Just a note to update.
Andy Salvaggio saw the car on a website and called me. He knows the original owner of the car and called to talk about it. He is 75 and lives locally. He had the car from new until late 70's. Raced under #68. Had Dick Guldstrand do a lot of work on the car. And the beat goes on...

Quick update on the Vette.
Just found a pic that Andy Salvaggio had at his house of the car on the track at Riverside Int'l in early 70's. Andy told me before he sadly passed away, that there is a passenger in the car because you could take a dignitary for a ride on the cool down lap after the race. He said this was near the finish line. I am looking for more history, but I was excited to see this pic. Going to Riverside museum to dig thru boxes. Sent Sam the old pic and a new pic to post with the magnesium 5 spokes I put on it. Couldn't help myself.

I don't know about the Camaro, but I will find out. I have some calls out on it already. Unfortunately Andy is no longer here to tell me. Can you tell what year that Camaro is?

427freak
04-16-2012, 07:07 PM
Can you see the number on the Camaro, or are you talking about the Vette? The Vette was #68 at the time.

PeteLeathersac
04-16-2012, 07:59 PM
Yes the Camaro, it looks like # 8 and a lot like one of the original 1970 Trans-Am team Chaparall cars, link below to compare.
Expanded view using the Ctrl + keys, it looks like the hood and roof top stripes are gone but original bowtie graphics on the side remain w/ # 8 added which wasn't one of the team Chappy Camaro #'s but a Titus Firebird in 1970.
Note the w'shld safety clip locations similar also headlight and painted/blank frt. signal lenses, plexi front nose spolier gone also bumper different so maybe damage repair?
Mo Carter's preferred # was 8 and although he ran a '69 Camaro in 1970, did he perhaps buy one of the team Chappy cars later as I think I've seen pics of Mo w/ a '70 Camaro that had this style flares and if so maybe came from Jim Hall's group?

A gentleman named Derek from a corvette forum located a couple of pics of the Vette from the early 70's. Here is one of them.
