Would like to run a 10.5" clutch setup in the '69 with the BB, I have all the parts except the flywheel. Somebody needed the 621 housing more than me, so I traded him for a nice 403. Anyone see any issues with this combo? I thought the L88 vettes used a 10.5" setup.....

Marlin,
L88's did use a 10.5 flywheel. It is still available from GM # 14085720. Only weighs 15lbs.

Awesome, thanks for the part number! Didn't the '69 Z's also use a 10.5"?

I do not know that, but I do believe some 70 small blocks had that flywheel. 70 lt1 Vettes?

If you wanna see something really neat, check out rare dual-disc clutch that, I believe, was a one-year-only option in 1969. I've always been surprised that it wasn't more popular and didn't really take off. Anybody here ever fool around with one? Please don't confuse this with the Centerforce Dual Friction Clutchs either because they are two entirely different animals.

----Marlin,,,You will love the light flywheel, especially if the car has a healthy gear. I did this swap to several 425 and 435hp Corvettes and it absolutely woke them up......Bill S

marlin, the 69 z-28 did use the 10.5 in clutch and the 403 bellhousing. good luck
Use whatever flywheel you want, but if this is Benjamin's car, run a scatter shield. He might just over-rev it a bit learning how to "flat-shift" when dad isn't looking.

Probably, but was using the rounded up term of 10.5" I think you are right though and the exact measurement was a 10.4

The dealer told me that I could have ordered a dual disc clutch in the Chevelle for about $96 CDN back in the day. That would probably be over $1000 in today's money, a lot of money for the average guy. Although I never had clutch problems in close to 200K miles of driving, in hind sight, it might have been good insurance. Exploding clutches are nasty. They were said to be bullet proof, but that's just talk. "They" say a lot of stuff. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif

Thanks for the link, that looks like the best route to take right about now.

RPO MA6. Apparently none ever put in a Camaro from the factory. Was used in select big block Corvettes from Feb 1969 through 1971, mostly M22 equipped L-88 and LS-6 cars if memory serves.

My uncle has one in his W-31 Olds; very light pedal, smooth and fast. I have a complete setup for my COPO car to put behind my Jenkins motor, but it's still on the shelf.

How would the 15 # flywheel work with 3.55 gears?

Any clutches set-up new or not is allways a new dancing step. Benjamins ride I would put a junk clutch in it so he can learn on. He will learn it.

Good point - most people burn up their first clutch! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif
I have a bone stock AC Delco clutch and pressure plate, so I might as well go with the stock flywheel.

the bell housings are interchangable. I have the 11" set up in my Z right now with the 403 housing. The set up in the old days was the 11" pressure plate with the 10.5" L-88 disc. That worked real good. M, put the set up you want to run in the car. Your kid will NOT burn that clutch up. He will drive that nova like a champ in 20 minutes or so. He looks to be dialed in to me. Why do double work?

Just trying to control costs a bit - figured why put an expensive unit in there first just to get it burned up! I'll order it from GM Parts Direct and be done with it, we are hoping to be able to fire it up later this year.

All your kids drive your Camaro for 20 minutes first time,Sam?
It's a right of passage for any gear head who wrenches on his own car. If you've never burnt a clutch and had to hump out the trans from your back then you can't call yourself a gear head.
The inexpensive unit will be the sacrificial lamb.
