I recently have had to deal with some real flakes and unreasonable people on ebay lately. How about a buddy system here to alert each other who deal in vintage parts about hard to deal with or unreasonable customers? I have plenty I could share so that others won't ever have to deal with people like this again.

My biggest headache is people in other countrys that want me to understate the prices they paid for an item so they don't have to pay full import duties. That makes it impossible for me to insure the item for it's real worth. Had one guy put in an ebay claim that the item was not as described because I wouldn't play his game. Ended up eating the $60.00 shipping to settle the deal instead of having to take the item back and sell it all over again. I'm really close to not shipping out of country, but people in Sweden, Norway, France and Australia are really great bidders and love to buy and pay big bucks for American oe performance parts. I'm really torn.....

The next problem I have is timely delivery inside the USA, but that is out of my control once the item is shipped. I have had items get to England in three days, but then I have had other items take ten days to go the hundred and ten miles to the west side of Chicago. If it wasn't so much fun and so profitable, I'd give it up.

Luckily some of the biggest scam sellers (you instantly recognize them when you see them bid) that scare me when I sell an item, have been some of my least problems.

I just had a seller charge me $10 and change to ship a thermostat housing from NJ to NY... Its not the $ that angers me, its the principle.

John, would you happen to know WHEN they charge import duty? Is it a hit-and-miss thing?

That was you? WOW! You are the reason that I started this thread! I told you, it cost ME $10.47 to ship the thermostat housing to you. Why should you have to pay anything less than what it costs me to ship it? Before you bid, you saw the shipping cost and how I was shipping the item. For any inquiring minds who would like to see who is in the wrong... Go to UPS.com and get a shipping quote. From 08094 to 10583. Exactly 1 pound boxed up. It costs $10.47. I explained this to you, with no response. I pack the item well, ship it out to you on time and then you leave me a neutral feedback and say I am unwilling to discuss and that I overpacked the item? You are the first person to ever say I packed it too well. I know who is being unreasonable here.... YOU.

USPS Priority Mail would have been $4.80 with postage purchased online includes free delivery confirmation. . I have no reasonable UPS or FedEx services out here. USPS is the only way to go. Once you learn what box or bag to use when shipping, it's definitely the better option.

Not when I can never make it to the local post office. Stated directly in the auction is that I ship UPS only, no exceptions. Whats not to understand?

I use USPS almost exclusively and whenever the package reaches the end purchaser the postal service in that country collects the appropriate tax. I never use UPS to ship to Canada because they have an exorbitant fee that they charge for handling the tax collection. I once sent a $150 dollar item to Canada by UPS and they supposedly charged $50.00 in collection fees that Canada Post would have charged $5.00 for the same procedure. As for the amounts charged, I think the percentages vary between provinces and territories. Other countrys, don't know.

In the past 10 years I have Sold over 2000 items on Ebay and all i can say now is Ebay gives way to much power to the buyer.
They can lie all they want and always win a dispute but the seller is always wrong.
I have 100% feedback because i am very honest with everything i sell as i describe it bang on but you always run into a dishonest nim rod once in awhile.
I am so so tired of paying Ebay fees along with Paypal fees even though they are both owned by the same company.
I now use Forums as my number one selling venue and a local Ad source that is all free. $25 on this forum is cheap for the year.
I post firm reasonable prices and move my stuff pretty well.
Ebay is now used as my last resort because when i have the stock to long, i throw it on there at a low starting price and get rid of it.

One thing i will say is i will never ever buy anything when someone has UPS as there shipper. I don't care how rare the part is as i will just pass with the UPS shipping service.
It is a big rip off here in Canada.
Like someone mentioned here in this post, the fees are atrocious.

I know some sellers that will not shipp to Canada.
That is a pitty because if you only knew what i was going to bid and pay for something that you sold for one tenth of my max bid,you would of liked that extra gravy.

I am in Canada and my number one customers are in the USA and i have made many friends selling to them.
I guess everyone has there own ways.
My 2 cents.

I like USPS and Fedex Ground. UPS is expensive and des have a tendancy to break things. That said, if a seller posts a shipping fee in an auction the buyer should be prepared to pay that rate. It is part of the terms of the auction. There are always exceptions to the rule and bidders should ask questions before bidding, not after they have won the item.

I like to offer actual or cheaper shipping since bidders seem to bid more when shipping is reasonable. If I lose a few bucks on shipping I tell myself the item sold for more than what it would have if shipping was more expensive. Am I fooling myself? Maybe.

Lately, I have had very few issues as a seller but many as a buyer. It seems like about 20% of the things I buy are significantly not as described. I'm talking intakes with major corrosion, cracks, etc. or tachs that are "working" when the needle is stuck against the face.

I usually use FedEx for US shipping for a couple of reasons. One is there prices are decent and the other is that I set everything up online at my house then drop it off at the local office.

I use USPS for shipping to Canada. They are much easier than FedEx. I hear too many horror stories about UPS.

I used eBay last month. A couple of items I had a reserve and they didn't sell. So between insertion fees, reserve fees, selling fees and PayPal....I didn't make much. It's out of hand in my opinion.

I had a reserve so I don't take a bath on some items and it just killed me in the end.

So I went back to Craigslist, forums and word of mouth and it seems to be working.....so far.

I don't even want to get into other sellers. I've had items that where the description wasn’t even close to what they had and the way some people package items is pathetic.

I would never use UPS to ship anything. I sold a BE 12 bolt last fall and the buyer arranged for UPS freight to pick it up. It was to ship freight collect to the freight terminal in the buyer's area. It was properly labeled, correct bill of lading, Pro # stickers on the skid, etc. They LOST the skid for about 5 weeks! The buyer finally received a call from the UPS truck driver trying to deliver to the PO box of the buyer's business address! UPS had lost the original bill of lading that we printed, made their own bill of lading with the shipper as prepaid and an incorrect destination address. I'm still getting bills from UPS, they don't have a clue.
USPS or FedEx only...

I used to sell about 300-400 items a year. I strived for 100% positive feedback but the flakes come to me for some reason.

I sold a 4 speed T10 that weighed around 100# to someone in Sweden last year. He hit the buy it now price at $499. He paided for the US mail for it, but gave the wrong address. The mail sent it back to me and he wanted me to send it to him free. I was like WTF. I offered to send it to him again of what it would cost me, or refund him his money minus the freight. He couldn't understand why I wouldn't shell out $250ish to send it out again on my dime.

The shipping calculator is one thing I have a hard time with. I can put down my zip code, with ups and the actual weights and add 2# for the packaging. I sold a carb to someone in LA for 9.99 and shipping was going to cost if I remember right was $21 and he send me 9.99 for shipping because thats what it showed him. I opened up the window after the transaction was over and it showed $15 something to ship it to my own zip.

I don't mind shelling out $1-3 on shipping when its something I made money on, but for a core junk rochester, I shouldn't have to pay someone to take it after all the fee's are final.

For sellers, its really in the dumps for them. Look up something as simple as 1969 Camaro radiator. About 400-600 radiators pull up. How many of them sold? 2-3 when you look at the completed history. It makes me sick to dig through the listings to find good stuff on there when the dot.net companys load it up with mail order part number crap that they don't stock hoping they will sell a $100 china alum radiator for $499. Mustang II frontends are the same way when your looking for hotrods and streetrods.

You can avoid the "new parts fits" on Ebay by typing in one space after search word and then -fits.

ok my turn ...

I sent a HEAVY item to western Canada several years ago (big block exhaust manifold).

I gave the buyer the USPS quote and he pissed back and said to send it Fed-Ex ground

I had an account so thought why not?

The slime KNEW he could ignore the customs and duty fees with Fed-ex and my account was charged back HIS fees ...

NEVER, EVER send ANYTHING out of the US with UPS or Fed-Ex on your account number

Do it with cash and walk into the store, there is no way for them to charge you back

Regarding shipping charges, some people think that is the only way they can make anything on their low priced parts ... IF the TOTAL cost is ok with me then I do it, if they are stupid they get nothing from me

We have been selling on ebay for ~ 12 years and find it best to be HONEST with the listing, point out the flaws you know, people will respect you for it. Try to gloss them over with fancy words then they hate you for it.

We use way more pictures than anyone else and TRY to pretend you are at a swap meet and picking up a part to look at in your hands ...

People that take a picture of an item from 50 feet away with their toes at the bottom of the photo and their kids plastic junk toys in the background are better off with no pictures IMHO

We USED to have to spend nearly an hour EVERY DAY at the post office to ship items, then we started using online postage and having the mailman pick the stuff up much easier. We still have to make a run to Fed-Ex but not as often as the USPS runs used to be.

Bottom line, like in life there are people that are different from you. Some people are just stupid and would box a heavy item without any thought ... others know what they are doing.

The last items I received packed by a moron were some seat tracks that were poking out of 3 sides of the box - he simply dropped the tracks into a large box and sent it ... unbelievable that they both made it ...

I agree ebay is only concerned with the buyers, they should realize that without the sellers there would be no buyers and that the SELLERS are the ONLY ones that make them money, the buyers do not pay anything to ebay ...

Thanks. Seems like a nice guy to me too but I had a similar experience with the questions, he did not like them even though they were simple and legitimate, he thought I was questioning his integrity. A few minutes after we spoke he de-listed the item. Bummer for me as the item was something I have been looking for for many years, bummer for him as I would have bought it.........
