View Full Version : 70 HEMI Charger R/T-SE 4spd, the only red one made

I have been thinking about it for a while. With one of the kids getting close to college age (16 year old daughter), and the fact I haven’t been driving it in a year or so, and that I have this ongoing, unfulfilled lust for a 73 Super Duty, I have chosen to let her go (the car, not the daughter).
I probably don’t have to tell too many of you long time followers anything about the car you don’t already know after following its haunted thread:
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=77973#Post77973
and the Hemmings article:
http://www.hemmings.com/mus/stories/2008/03/01/hmn_feature1.html
But in case you are looking for the only one of its kind, here are the highlights:
-One of 10 Hemi R/T-SE Charger 4-speeds produced, (10 four speeds, 6 autos, total)
-The only red Hemi R/T-SE produced
-17,000 miles (same owner for past 24 years, I bought it with 12,234 miles)
-Unrestored. Repainted twice by me: in 1987 and 2004. Original leather interior, original undercoated belly.
-I am the second owner to drive it after the original owner, here in NJ. The car was off the road from 1975 to 1987. Owners 2 and 3 before me never got it running.
-Complete provenance since October 1969, documented. All three prior owners (all in NJ) interviewed and reunited with the car. All of them confirmed the car’s mileage, provenance and history.
-It has the entire dealer file that documents the original owner’s buying experience from inspiration in October 1969, to consummation, on to conception, and through delivery on Jan 3, 1970. More documents than the car is long, literally
-Dealer installed tubular headers from 1970 “Hustle Stuff”catalog, installed prior to delivery as documented by original dealer paperwork.
-Fastest stock hemi car I have ever owned: 12.77 @111 mph on street tires, (original owner got a 11.70 out of it when he raced it at Englishtown in the early 1970’s)
-Hemmings Muscle Machines called it “The Most Documented Hemi Car in Existence”
-Probably the most well-known Hemi Charger there is. Featured in over a dozen magazines and reference books over the past 24 years. There was even a scale model replica made of it a couple years ago - the entire production run completely sold out in a week! (one still in the box, goes with the car, if you want it)
She is the only one of her kind in the universe. She’s mean, nasty and will scare the hell out of you.
Feel free to PM me or email any questions to me at
[email protected]
Thank you, Steve

Here's a sampling of some of the original paperwork that this car has:
The original dealer file:

The legal pad sheet with the original negotiation for price, including the set of headers:

How about the original bill of lading from the delivering tractor trailer on New Year's Eve, 1969:

The dealer prep work order, documenting the installation of the headers prior to delivery:

Lots more in the file. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/naughty.gif

Thanks for the referral! I haven't driven the Charger more than 25 miles in over a year and a half, other than to top off the tank. I've been spending all the spare time with the Pontiacs (and the family)! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif
So, I figured it's probably time - better that someone enjoys driving this monster than seeing it hibernate (like my old 93 Viper race car that's been up on jackstands for 12 years now - but that's another story).

For you toy collectors out there (of both 1:1 scale and 1:18 scale), here is the model that Supercar1.com made of my Charger a couple years ago. It came as a total surprise at the time, when someone emailed me a link on my birthday alerting me, so I bought the last few they still had.

Steve are you really sure you want to sell this baby
As I am knocking at the door going on 60 there are a few cars I really regret selling Back then it was about the money today its memories of what I once had
My first car was a copy of miss belvedere same color had a 413 in that one
Had a lot of cars in my time but the two I let go I wish I had today
One would be the 57 Plymouth and the other one would be my 1959 chevy El Camino with a 409
In all these year and all the car shows I have been I Never have seen a 57 Plymouth
Or a 59 El There has NOT been a day were I wish I had keep those two cars. They were cheep back then but today well lets just say the money is just not in my Budget as I am on SSI
They were a LOT of fun back then . I just wish before My time is up to get one more
Time to have some fun

Hi Norm, How are you doing?
As for regrets, I'll go with what Sinatra said: "Regrets, I've had a few, but then again, too few to mention." <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif
I have a list of regretfully sold cars from over the years, ranging from the 71 hemicuda ragtop, to a pair of 71 six-barrel cuda ragtops, to the 71 hemicharger sunroof car, etc, but most of them I regret because I sold them long before they became valuable. (Which isn't a proper basis for a legitimate regret to be based upon, anyway).
So yes, Norm, I will regret selling this car if it does sell, since it has been part of the family for a quarter century, long before I had a wife, or kids, but if the funds go toward something important, like the kid(s) education, it's worth it.
The daughter wants to be an engineer, so if I can help her accomplish that goal, it's fine by me. Anyway she likes her great-grandmother's 75 Firebird better anyway, since that's the first car she ever drove.
...and I wouldn't trust the Charger to my boy. If you've seen him "drive" a lawnmower, you'd agree. It's more like watching a full scale version of pinball, the way he manages to crash into every tree on the property. The John Deere store has an running tab at the parts counter for all the things he's broken, so far this year. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif

Hi Steve I know what you mean Kids today think it’s a game watching too MUCH to fast and furious (Ha Ha)
A car like that charger you have to respect It is so fast that you have to know when NOT to get in to it and the street is NO playground for that baby
I am doing ok some days better some not as good
12 years living with pain every day is no picnic .I just try to ignore it but some times it just wins
The thing that gets me is I had a lot of really nice cars back in the 60s &70s
Back then I could afford them/ they were cheep BUT today a lot of the are just out of reach
And I am getting to old and I am to banged up to find a fixer upper as they say and rebuild I did my share of building cars
Any way good luck withy your Charger hope it finds a good home
BY the way I did have a 68 charger R/T 440 sky blue white interior and the only Hemi I had was a 57 Chrysler 300 with a 392 Hemi (ANOTHER ONE I KICK MYSELF FOR EVER SELLING) That was one big car and fast to boot

Steve, I will never forget the moment I found the file for your car. As soon as I saw "Charger R/T" and "Wickberg" on the jacket, I knew it was for your car. I brought the folder home that day and showed my dad, the first thing he said was, you need to track the owner down and give him all this stuff. Then he called my uncle (who also worked at Suburban in 1970) and they told stories for hours about your car and all the other hot Dodge's they sold there.
Good luck with the sale (altho you know I feel connected to the car, and would hate to loose track of it). The fact that Dad prepped it and did other work on it, Suburban was my family dealership and Steve Martin (no...not that one)is a friend too. Not to mention every time I see it and touch it I get a warm feeling,

John, you and your Dad are truly what is "right" about this hobby. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif
So many people in this day and age, would have literally held something like that original dealer material, for ransom. Through your detective work, the car went from having no documentation other than gossip and a broadcast sheet, to the mother lode of paperwork.
And I do remember that day, back in 1990 when I was working for Musclecar Review, when you tracked me down and mailed me the entire package, out of the blue. That was right after the car was in the November, 1990 issue.

http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/tt77/nk15268c/DayTwop2-1.jpg
And you know what is really scary? The storyline I used for that article was just a fantasy of what I thought it must have been like to buy that car back in 1970. It's bizzare how close I was to the real, actual story that I later learned from you and your Dad.
Cue the Twilight Zone theme...again!
And now that I think of it, I should have trademarked the term "DAY TWO," since as far as I can recall, that was the first time the term appeared in print. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif And I got all sorts of grief for using it as the title since the magazine powers-that-be didn't think anyone would understand what I meant. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif

Here's how she looks with its 1970 set of 15x4 and 15x7 Cragars that were installed by the original owner back in January, 1970. Of course, they go with the car. Those 1972 Firestone Parnelli Jones L60x15 tires are as hard as hockey pucks now. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

Now that is the quintessential Musclecar, a gross polluter and massive consumer of the Earth's limited fossil fuels. Could you imagine picking the kids up from school at Parent Pick-Up and seeing this macho Red Hemi Charger parked among a line of Toyota Prius'es? You'd definitely be the "cool dad" at school!

In case anyone is interested and wants to see her in person, the Charger will be at the 2011 MCACN in Chicago in November in the non-judged SYC display.
And yes, she will be riding on her 41 year old Cragars and vintage rubber. Everything on the car will be as delivered in Day 2 condition on 01/03/1970.
Stay tuned.

Here's another vintage photo of the car taken in 1987, when Pete Ianelli owned it. It was stored under that blue tarp, in what resembled a wildlife preserve for vintage musclecars. Hibernating in the yard was a blue 69 COPO Camaro, a 70 L78 Camaro, a 70 LS6 El Camino, a green 69 Hemi GTX, a 73 Superduty T/A and a bunch of other equally rare beasts.

Yes, it is a lot of money for the car.
Try to find another one. - you won't because they made only one.
Try to find another hemi car with 43 years of completely documented ownership.
Or unrestored with 17,000 miles, still riding on its original 1970, owner installed wheels and tires.
With the only known set of dealer-installed and ironclad documented, Scat Pack hemi headers.
With every single piece of documentation since even before it was built.
As for market value? Show me a comparitive sale of an unrestored 426 Hemi, four speed,70 Charger R/T-SE. There was a yellow 70 hemi R/T Charger (not an SE) that was beautifully restored, which privately sold in the same ballpark within the past year or so.
P.S. I was told the exact same thing in 1987 when I sold that yellow 71 Hemicuda ragtop for $54K. I had people calling me and telling me how I ripped off Otis Chandler by making him pay that much for a hemi car. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

Any thing is worth what someone else will pay for it.
"That is way over market value"
My last realtor told me the same thing when I had him list my house for $20k over market value in 2008 when housing was at it's worst. When he made such a fuss over it I made him agree that if it sold for more he would only take the commission on what he felt was market value. That was on Monday August 11th, 2008. On Wednesday August 13th, the VERY first couple that viewed the house bought it after only inspecting it for only 20 minutes!

If you don't have something constructive to say in the classifieds please don't say anything. If you want to argue value with the owner please take it up in private. I want people to be able to advertise their car here and not have to put up with what just happened.

Ahhh the myth of polite Canadians, shattered again. 87gn, I notice you are new here. Welcome. If there is a site on the internet where you can learn more about american muscle cars - particularly of the bow-tie variety - than this site, I haven't been there. I thought I knew a lot. Then I came here. Sit back, read, learn, listen. And if you open your maw and get it wrong someone will politely set you straight (there's that word again).
You don't know this Charger, obviously. It's special. Very special. Beyond its rarity, its history is so rich and so reflective of what a "survivor" truly is that it nearly lives and breaths and has a heartbeat. You should dig up some info on it and learn about it. The question you should have asked is "what makes it so special for someone to want 285K?" You would have gotten your answer in an informative, civilized manner. Instead, you were torn a new one. If you enjoy that, go to moparts.com, they do that over there to guys who just say hello. If you want to talk american muscle (particularly Chevrolet dealer Supercars) and learn some cool stuff that will impress your friends, or even share your knowledge, this is the place to be.
So, welcome, relax. Listen first, then talk. And thanks for wanting to bring Steve's car back up to the top. We have that in common, as well as the fact that we are both impolite Canadians.

DES (Tracker1) is from Newfoundland as am I. We have had to be extra polite over the years until someone discovered it was cool to be from Newfoundland now we are just polite like 99.99999% of all Canadians.
With Apologies to NJSteve on behalf of 87gn.

Being from the rudeness capital of Planet Earth, we take rudeness to Olympian heights, here in Joysey. Even the New Yorkers are merely considered amateurs at the fine art.
Did you know that in New Jersey you can deduct the cost of post-graduate courses in advanced full-contact rudeness training, off of your tax returns if it is directly related to your employment in this state? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif It's considered mandatory training for all DMV workers here.
Thanks guys! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif

Steve...your Charger flat out rocks.
Now, if Rick can convince his wife to work thousands of hours overtime, Rick can have the car of his dreams!
Good luck with the sale...you've been a great caretaker of the car <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif

Every day I remind her of the importance of working all of that overtime at Arrowhead Hospital so she can buy this Charger for us. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

I just sold the 72 Trans Am. So now if anyone is interested in the Charger, I am happy to talk about price.
If I sell the Charger then I really can find something interesting as the next project...and send the daughter to college, too. If she REALLY has her heart set on going. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

I took her out of hibernation the other day while out in the garage working on the new Firebird project.
Very scary (as usual). Hadn't been run since the MCACN show last November. I pumped the gas pedal once, turned the key and within 1/2 a revolution she started up and was running. She definitely wants to be out there hunting prey! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/naughty.gif

As part of my mid-winter routine I started all the cars today and drove them around a few miles. I got the Charger running. As usual, I just hooked the battery up, let the electric fuel pump fill the bowls, and then turned the key. She started on the first crank.
I topped off the air in the tires- after a year they all lost exactly 9 psi each. Went for a slow drive on the 40 year old tires which felt like I was driving a shopping cart. Boy, I forgot how much nicer these things ride better on radials.
Stills idles and runs very nicely. She is quite "peppy", a term my Gramma used to say about her 1964, 426-powered Dodge. There's nothing like a hemi with headers. It sounds like a 1970's SuperStocker. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

If anyone wants to see the original dealer file docs and other stuff, the Mecum auction site just added a downloadable PDF of all of the stuff. Here is the site link. Near the top it says "additional information". Just click on that and you can see it.

Hemmings.com just posted a blurb on their blogsite about the Charger. Some of the comments are rather humorous:

I'm not that close. I'm about three hours away. If you get bored down there and want to come up to Chicago let me know. I will probably be there Tuesday to drop off a few cars.
