I was reading a previous post from 2005 pertaining to a 427 engine with a CE engine number, but no VIN number stamped onto the engine. A few members said that the CE engine numbers were used as warranty replacement engines. I was wondering how the person who answered that forum knew that the CE was a replacement block? Also, what does the CE and numbers following it stand for?

A CE engine is either a replacement engine or an engine sold over the counter out of the parts depertment. It shouldn't have a VIN stamped on it because it wasn't designated to go in any particular car. The CE stands for Chevrolet Engine. The numbers following the CE were just the engine plant serial numbers.

The first number after the CE is the year the block was assembled.

For example: This block is CE455416. The first 4 designates it as a 1974 and the 55416 is a number that Tonowanda used.

Cool, thanks for all the help!
Now, say I don't have the paperwork from the dealer saying when this engine was replaced, do you guys know if there's a way of tracking these engines through Chevy? As in which dealership it would've been sent to?

No but if you find out a way, let me know. The picture I put up is of the CE block in my Chevelle and would love to find out more info.

Fran Preve told me once years ago about a leger/book at the Tonawanda plant w/ the CE #'s they shipped recorded but the book foolishly tossed by one of his co-workers..
From what I understood, the recorded info included as built engine internal details also where it was shipped and/or Vin specific info corresponding to vehicles getting warranty replacements..

Wow, imagine how much easier life would be if that book was still around. A little less homework to do
