Where can I find information on the Motion Vega? I know that this was the car the brought the Feds in and shut down the program. That is about all I know. I am looking for pictures and all the info I can find.

Hi:
I did run info and pix of Motion-converted V-8 Vegas, including the big-block one that brought the Feds down to Motion, in my book, MOTION Performance Tales Of A Muscle Car Builder published last year by Motorbooks. It's available on Amazon.com as well as Motorbooks site.

Can anyone give a synopsis of "the feds put an end to it"?

The feds ended the V8 Vega program because of an article written in car craft magazine titled "King Kong is living on Long Island" that brought their attention to Motion plus the vega was a smog prepared economy car and had 5 smog devices on the car. Motion Performance was removing the smog devices and installing small and big blocks in these cars. When the feds paid Joel a visit he was ordered to cease and desist. He was to be fined $10,0000 per smog device removed (I believe that was the price) thats 50,000 per vehicle. He settled with them and could only build the specialty Phase III Supercars for export only. I believe he received a small fine greatly less than the original cost.I know this isnt 100% correct but you get the jist of it.

Thank you for the info. Interesting.
I'm kind of surprised they were that concerned with just a few vehicles being modified, but I guess that's government for ya.

Yeah. The vegas as well as all Phase III Motion cars were insanely fast. Its a shame that they had to put and end to it.Always killing someones fun.

Michael, here is text from an older source, a little more info.
"It was an article about the 454 Motion Super Vega in Car Craft, ‘King Kong Lives On Long Island,' that set off alarms at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1974 and forever changed the nature of Joel Rosen’s business. Joel Rosen was presented with a Cease and Desist order from the EPA (to halt the building of new cars with powertrains not available from the factory), executed by the Department of Justice. The bottom-line: If Motion did not cease production of its specialty vehicles, it would be fined $10,000 per emission device removed in the build process. This translated to $50,000 in fines for each V-8 Vega!
Rosen settled with Uncle Sam in 1975, paying a $500 fine and agreeing to the terms outlined in the EPA and DOJ documents. While this put a major crimp in business, Motion did continue building and marketing ultra-high-performance specialty Chevrolets. However, all vehicles were special-ordered (and invoiced) “For Export” or “For Off Road Use Only.”
