Hi Guys,

A few people know from following my Facebook page that I was recently turned onto a fantastic '69 Z28. I owe the lead to Jeff Boone (69L78 here). I thank him for his enthusiasm. He is true good-nature hobbyist! I had Jeff inspect the car Monday and Wednesday I drove truck and trailer to purchase the car. Ok... onto the Z.

Very early 1969 Z28. Very rare "M" code block, original motor, trans, rear, heads, carb, 837 alt, 9204 master, power steering, flat hood, console, no gauges, 729 interior (deluxe with woodgrain), late '68 dated seat belts, white houndstooth, pre-x code tag but has "X3" on the bulk head, even has the original smog system (pump, hoses, inlets, diverter valve, check value and all hardware) sitting in a box for reinstall too. Will need 1/4's later on + a trunk floor and of course a restoration but as we begin to bring the car back to road-worthy condition, I'm continuously impressed by the car's refreshing original state.

Plans for it now include a thorough cleaning, dusting, new carpet, belts, hoses, fluids, plugs, wires, shifter rebuild, t handle, sun tach, traction bars, a good set of shocks, and tires. When all that is done, she'll get some new front end bushings and a wheel alignment because I need a driver! The car was authenticated by Jerry MacNeish too.

Onto the photos... Have a nice night.

Thanks,
Dan

Score of the evening!

The car had no paperwork present during the time of the sale but was convinced something would turn up when we took apart the interior for cleaning and carpet. Sure enough, the broadcast sheet for the car was under the driver's footwell area.

Items include dealer 218 - zone 10, tag matching 158440 Norwood #, 729 trim, 71-71 paint, DZ motor... Does anyone know about the "XF" trans? I know its the original M21.

And finally with the original hood on it

Thanks for looking.

Car was in Hanover, PA for about 7 years with the previous owner. He drove it about 150 miles in that time period. The owner before him had it since his return from Vietnam - 1972 or so is when he bought it. He was also from that area. We have his contact information but will wait until we can send him him a nice written letter with photos of the car before reaching out.

More photos to come later today!

What a score with my favorite interior color. After seeing so many restored Z/28s it is so refreshing to see a flat hood original car. Is this car exceptional or did most most original Camaros have this good of panel alignment from the factory? I would do what ever I could to save those fenders because you are not going to get that great of a fit even with NOS fenders.

very cool car! I did not think norwood cars even had build sheets. Most of the unrestored camaros I have seen have a bigger than normal gap between the front fender and the leading edge of the door, and when restored that gap is reduced.

It is a 386 block with a casting date of M34. I believe if you go to the Camaro.net website there is some research done that explains the M coded block.

Thanks a lot guys!

No spoiler, flat hood. The rear spoiler was added (not by me). I will not be putting a cowl hood on the car. It was there was I purchased it. The original flat hood is here to stay.

Thanks,
Dan

<span style="font-weight: bold">From the CRG on the M Code Block:
&quot;M&quot;-Coded Blocks
There is one exception to this convention that has been observed: some blocks have been seen with &quot;M&quot; cast codes. Research by the Saginaw Metal Casting Operations of GM Powertrain Division has found that these &quot;M&quot; codes are not date codes, but actually a foundry code used to indentify parts that were made to evaluate a casting process change. After evaluating the parts, the blocks would either be destroyed or released into production. There is no way to determine the date an &quot;M&quot;-coded block was poured. </span>

That's not the broadcast sheet. That's the IBM computer card - don't see them very often.
Zone 10 is Colorado. Don't know the dealer.
XF is an M21.

Hey Dan and Dave,

Great find and Great choice on the NOS sheetmetal. I would also look for a good rust free floor from a donor car The repro floors don’t have all the right indents, creases, wrinkles and bracket impressions that the factory floors do. This way you can butt weld the repair sections in. An original car like this deserves that.

Dave and Dan.....I would take that car down to the local spray car wash and gently hit the engine bay with some power water and take it home and Boeshield or WD-40 everything under the hood and then wipe it down or spray some on a rag and wipe all metal. Will look good and preserve some of what is left of the paint and toning.

I would agree with that, Donnie. My all-original 69 Chevelle has a plastic PS cap that I have absolutely no reason to believe has ever been changed, and yet I have had some self-professed 'experts' tell me that it is &quot;wrong&quot; for the car <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/no.gif

I have inspected very early survivor 69 camaros from 9B of 68 and found them to have the black plastic type, and the cars have been from both LA and Nor. Does that represent every car or take into consideration vendor shortages and such no, but every original 69 camaro I have inspected has had the black plastic. Donnie what information do you have regarding the usage of the metal cap? BTW the metal cap part# is 846 and the plastic is 820.

NICE car, it looks awesome as is ...

on to the pet peeves ...

WHY are SO many Camaros (especially 69's) out there with the emblems installed so far &quot;off&quot;???

I think Donnie is referring to what some have found on some original `69 Chevelles. Camaros may never had the metal caps.
Here's an original 67K mile Jan. built `69 Chevelle.

Steve, I dont have any information only my observations over the years.
that either kind could be on a 69.
so it sounds like the majority of Camaros got the plastic cap and the majority of Chevelles got the metal cap.
but sense both types were used in 69 you could be the minority. as Bills car is my Chevelle also has the plastic cap and it appears original to the car.
and I dont want some judge at a show taking off points and telling me its NOT correct.

sorry about getting this off track Dan

Hi Donnie,

I missed your reference to Chevelles. My understanding is that for Chevelles the plastic cap was a mid year introduction. Again I was exclusively talking about the Camaro. Thanks for the clarification.

What was the IBM card used for? First step of the car order? Was the build sheet printed from the IBM card? Must be rare to find one, if they used the buildsheet to build the car.

PeteLeathersac
03-16-2011, 05:32 PM
I think I've mentioned this here in the past but late 60's when I was a kid we lived in Oshawa GM Canada town and my dad used to bring these IBM cards home to use as paper or other stuff...like our bicycle spokes held w/ clothespins!.
Dad was an electrical-mechanical engineer / math-physics guru who had quit the business world to teach school and was head of math at one of the large Oshawa high schools..
He was into computers then and had been since the 50's although besides big business there was little going on w/ them in the late 60's..
I have no idea how he was ending up w/ the IBM cards but being they were lose you'd expect whatever they were used for at the GM plant was over after the cars were built also not usually left in cars?.

Those IBM cards were what we used to program the computers with! All the students at General Motors Institute had to learn &quot;FORTRAN IV&quot;. Each step in the program sequence had to be punched onto those cards and read into the computer. Raw data was also fed into the computers on punch cards. If you wanted to computer to &quot;know&quot; all of the build options on a car, a keypunch operator had to punch out an IBM card from the list provided. After the cards were read by the computer, the inventory requirements were calculated for the rolling build schedule. God I'm old!
Pete - I visited the St Catherines MCP many time when I was Supt of Production at Tonawanda MCP. It was pretty common knowledge in GM that St Catherines MCP was the most efficient and best quality foundry in GM.

Cool info Bergy!.
Did you work w/ Fran P. at Tonawanda?.

So how/where/why would an IBM card end up in any vehicle especially the one it belongs to?.
Sporadic spot checks to confirm all's flowing correctly?.

BTW, I believe that is the original assembly line cap as the later ones had an additional molded ring around that center relief hole opening.

Here's a shot of a couple caps from the garage. Newer style replacement cap on left, original assembly line piece on right.

Good old FORTRAN (Formula Translation) and COBOL (Common Business Operating Language)...i Learned them both in 11th grade (flowcharts and all). I was really familiar with the IBM cards.

The one program that I &quot;programmed through the cards&quot; was to run the sequence of Fibonacci numbers to 100,000. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/headbang.gif

Took me quite a while to get it to work...LOL

I was at the foundry and Fran was at the motor plant. Even though the plants were connected and I would be at QC meetings at the motor plant, I didn't know Fran. It's been a lot of years and I don't know axactly when Fran was at Tonawanda. I spent most of my time in operations (on the shop floor). Since I never worked at Norwood, I can't speak to how the IBM card got into a car. I did work at the St. Louis Corvette Assy plant when I was co-oping as a student. We used build sheets. The same info was on the punch cards though (the punch cards were the source for the eventual build sheet).

Sorry to steal this thread!

I have never installed traction bars before. They go in easy! Ran out of time before evening plans to install the driver's side and with a few adjustments yet to be made, we'll be all dialed in.

you could consider checking out the blue turtle wax (it has color filler). I used the black stuff on 'blackie', and it works great. I convinced another chap on this website (has a black 69 motion camaro) and he loved it.

I have used the red wax they sell on an old laquer 61 vette I have and it really made the paint pop. all hand application, no buffer.

it may hold you over....and could bring the color out. I don't think they are making the blue too much longer, but black and red are still available.

take with a grain...(I would go get some though)

If you just want to make it shine a bit, take some 2000 on a soft block with plenty of water and liquid soap in the bucket, lightly knock off the worst oxidation. Then fine cut on an orbital, and hand swirl remover.
I typically go for the least destructive first, and then determine how much further things need to go to make where I can live with it.

Lawrence Shaw (sixt9rsx33) has a Gold 69 RS/Z28 which had original paint when he purchased it, basically from photos it looked to be the same condition as William's Black RS/Z.
I though (by the photos) it was salvageable with a little touch-up and figuring on some tinting to match some of the sun-bleached paint. However after he brought the car down and I took a look at the paint in person, the effects of sun on the gold paint were evident, the paint held up nowhere near as well as the black car, even though in photos it appeared much better. The car needed to be taken down and done right, there was no option besides doing it right.

Over the past 25-30 years the vehicles I have seen lead me to believe that the Metallics hold up nowhere near as well as the Solids.

Another update on the Z.

Front end is just about done! New lower ball joints, lower control arm bushings, idler arm, pitman arm, offset shafts, and some hardware were all replaced. The original 2 piece rotors were being cut as I was leaving (the one completed looked great) and new wheel bearings (inner and outer) were being inspected. The oil pan was hot tanked and the dents removed - slug too(!) and the gasket replaced. The flywheel was about to be cut, and the new Ram clutch will be installed shortly too. Delco front shocks should be in today...

New bushings are pressed in the new rear leaf springs along with new hardware... and then some Uncle Sam Scardino Traction Action Bars will be installed, with new rear KYB shocks. The diff and trans are the last items to be gone through and then we're smooth sailing. Waiting on some new rubber and still toying with the exhaust system swap. Enough jabber now onto the photos...

I concur on the non-chromed holes in the lower part of the bumper. Camaro bumper guards bolt on using specific clamps, not the holes pictured in your photo.

And the final update before picking up the car. Should be all set and done next week. The rear is complete, clutch installed, #403 bellhousing installed, front end set and greased, oil pan cleaned and new gasket installed, oil pump is rebuilt, new rear springs installed too capped by some special traction bars (Thanks Sam Scardino and Dennis Cumby!), have an NOS Sun 10k rpm tach to in, along with a trio pod of Blue Line Gauges... That should be about it.

Case after being cleaned in the parts washer and hot tanked...

That's correct, Plastic fill cap and Deep Groove Power Steering Pulley 3941105DD. I've owned my 69 Z/28 since 1977 and its what I see.

I love the fact that you are putting all the mechanicals &quot;right&quot;, but not doing a &quot;proper&quot; full resto. I hope you leave it original forever. Restored, it would become just another Z/28. It has character now! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

Very neat car!
Seeing people appreciate cars showing a little use and age makes me appreciate my car the way it is more too. Mine has a 22 year old so-so paint job. I'm starting to think it's just fine like this for my lifetime.

Wrote him a sincere, formal letter with photos of the car and every day when the mail comes, I hope I receive correspondence.

Thanks for the compliments!
