I picked up a 4 bolt main 3969854 block cast H.30.9 and wanted some opinions on the stamp.

It appears it started out as a T0916KE then it was ground down at Tonowanda then it bacame a CE070400. On the bottom of the block where the starter bolt on is stamped T099. Broach marks are very clear everywhere on the block but under the stamps.

My theory is it was stamped to go on a car but then it turned into a CE block before it went out the door????

Thanks, Kurt

What does the T099 means?

That is the build date of the motor. 9th mo 9th day. Same format that would be on the top pad for a production engine.
Typically CE blocks were stamped on this machined pad near the starter.
Looks like they could not figure out what to do with this block... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

Is it only on CE blocks this date is stamped by the starter?

I have a engine block with T089, but the castingdate is H 23 9, could T089 be 8th day in 9th month?

From what I have seen....yes, only the CE blocks are stamped down by the starter. Also, the T099 stands for the 9th month of 1969.

This is what Kurt Sonen over on Team Camaro said about the block.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">KE is for the MA6 dual clutch. Production total of zero. They made up this engine but it was never installed since the RPO was never orderable. Tonawanda then converted it to a CE block and sent it out the door.
Interesting they got this far towards actually building MA6 cars....</div></div>

T089 is the 8th month of 1969 or August of 1969....no specific day.

I stand corrected, thanks. If it were a specific day like up top it would be T0909

Thank you guys. I dont want to hijack the tropic, but I have one more question.
Could you buy a L88 shortblock over the counter in 1969? Or was it only complete engines?
