View Full Version : 69 Chevelle BB fuel line requirement

I'm working on a project I bought a few weeks back, it is a 69 Chevelle 300 deluxe hard top, with a 427/TH400, factory AC car. Originally it had a 307/TH350. It currently has a single 5/16" fuel line; I want to change it to a 3/8" fuel line and use a quadrajet carb (don't laugh, I've got a guy that really knows how to make them work well).

It seems like many of the HP Chevrolets that used the quadrajet also had a 1/4"return line.

Does anyone know if the return line is necessary with the q-jet Big Block configuration?

My goal is to make it a great running, street-friendly car with a stock appearance. The engine and trans have been previously rebuilt.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The use of a return line would help prevent vapor lock. The factory used them on the 325 and 350 h.p. for a reason. It's refreshing to see a malibu versus a poorly done cloned ss.

Phil,
the return line went from the fuel pump back so it shouldn't
affect your Qjet if you dont use it.

Gents,

Thanks for the input. I've seen many a q-jet car (other than BB Chevys) that did not have a return line. Just want to be sure before going through the ordeal to change lines from the 5/16" to 3/8" line.

The return line didn't appear until 69 Phil. My 68 SS-396 has a q-jet, and a single 3/8" fuel line. You just need the fuel pump to go with it.

Phil,

Your seats will be top notch when our interior guy finishes them.
Are you missing the RH side "300 Deluxe" emblem?
If your not needing any paint repair I would take your car to a "Painless Dent Remover" to have the few small dents repaired. Get new tail pipes, the ones that tuck up under and are hidden for that sleeper look. I would not put "SS" exhaust tips on it. Remove those "Don Lightfoot" plastic cowl covers that never came on the car. Get new "Historic Plates" that read, "300 DX".
Hard to tell from the picture, but is the LH Side "Spear Molding" a bit bent up, you can have it staightened and polished.
Just a few items I see.... Love your 300 Deluxe Chevelle.

Dan,

I like the license plate. I might have to go down that road.

I'm getting a little work done to the car soon and will get some of the cosmetics corrected. I'm very much looking forward to getting the seats back in the car (Thank you Dan). The rest of the interior is in very good condition, so that should be a quick fix. The missing 300 emblem is due to fender damage. Whoever fixed it, just ground down the studs, left them in the fender and mudded them over.

Bill, Thanks for the info regarding the 68 Q-jet set up. I should be safe just installing the 3/8" line. It hasn't starved for fuel with the 5/16" line, but then again, it really doesn't transition well from low rpm to high rpm, with that Edlebrock carb. I've been told that is common????

Anyway, thanks for all the input. I'll post a few pix after the fixes.

Phil,
don't you already have a 300 deluxe post sedan with the same color combo? blue / white painted top?

My Dear Canadian Pal....I understand you like the look of those cowl covers....but they make the back of my hair stand up. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/no.gif Just my opinion.

Jim,

I do, literally identical cars (one post, one hard-top), paint, interior, engine, trans and ac.

I came across this car that someone already started to do what I had in mind. It isn't perfect, but very solid start to a good driver quality car. It can be driven and enjoyed right now.

Nice looking 300 Deluxe coupe Phil. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif Seems like there aren't any more around that are kept without getting the SS treatment.
Neat that you have a matched color combo pair.

Woj

For entertainment purposes. A few pix of the pair.

The post car was built in Kansas City, the hard top built in California. Both glacier blue, white painted top, blue interior, 307's, TH350's, Factory AC cars. The hard-top car has the dreaded aftermarket riveted-on side molding (that has got to go).
