i have a few original 837 alternators and not all of them have the hook fan, so my question is not all 837 alternators had the hook fan right

I can only speak from experience. My '70 Deuce had its original -837 alt but, the fan did not have the hook on one of the blades. I guess it could have been replaced (the fan) but unlikely. I did put a hook fan on the alt. as I had understood that to be correct.

Sam,
I would have left your alternator alone. Although I've seen some 70 model year alternators with the pronounced hook on them, most don't have it. I use the hook style on 68-69 dates and the other smaller tab style on 70's. My take is the hook style is earlier than the same profile fan without.

My known-original 837 alternator (9B19) has the "hook" fan.

There is a unique mark on the back of the "hooked" fan blade that i did not see on the original fan blade on my '70 837 alternator. Can't describe it as it is not in front of me, but have seen it on other "hooked" blades.
