Rubbing out swirls in paint

I was thinking of rubbing and buffing out some scratches from over the years of wiping it down with mist and shine.


A few weeks ago I thought I would practice on one of the work trucks that normally gets washed a few times a week that about a year old. I used the clay bar on everything with Mist and Shine. After that was done, I got out a white 3M waffle pad and went over it with some white Finesse It, washed it down, then black waffle with machine glaze and then some more Wizzards glaze. To do all of this, I humped at it and spent a good 10-12 hours at it with my Snapon 7/9 inch buffer. Now it has its fair share of swirl marks all over it.


Last week I see that Mequires has an orbital buffer and a 2 or 3 step package that will take care of all the light scratches and swirl marks. Has anyone used this? Did it really work?

Or do I need to buff out 100-200 cars again to get the hang of it with my 3M-Wizards combo?

If you end up purchasing an orbital buffer, below is a link to the Meguiar's G110v2. It's one the best out there, as far as orbital buffers go from what I have read and experienced from guys that have purchased them. It actually has is a variable speed.....like cruise control. It's next on my list of detailing tools.

I have a dewalt variable speed buffer I have found that finishing with Meguiar's swirl free polish and a red foam pad works well to get rid of swirl marks.

Check this thread. This old 'Vette really pops. Love the Meguiars M80 Speed Glaze. Then follow with Meguiars Showcar Glaze 7. Then a good carnuba like Meguiars Hi Tech Yellow wax. All applied with a Porter Cable with a foam pad. These products have been around for awhile but they work. We use it on every thing from lacquer to basecoat/clear with good results.

I use 3M Imperial hand glaze to remove swirls...{By hand}datailing for 36 years and all I use are 3M products. Tan in color and it will be alittle tuff to remove bit well worth it!. Remember...no circles when applying any glaze or wax as the buffer does the same so why do the same with your pad. Always follow the body lines. I use diapers to remove wax, It will take two diapers to remove the glaze as the one will almost smere and the second will remove the rest. I use this on my black paint and it works wonders. Very good on Lacquer {Spelling?} paint.

I use a Mothers Clay bar with Mothers showtime detail-er and then dry it up with a microfiber rag.
Then i wax the car by hand with that pink stuff called &quot;Liquid Luster&quot; (been using it for over 20 years on all my cars).
Paint was done in 1985 and it is a Black color.
If there are any stubborn swirl marks left i then use Scratch X on the direct spot were the swirl is.
I do this all by hand.
When i am finished all my friends think i just got the car painted again LOL
I also have the 3M wax that was given to me and it works as well as the Liquid Luster.
Everyone thinks Black is hard to take care of but i do not have a problem doing what i do as i have 4 out of my 6 cars being Black.

Once a year, I use Meguiars formula 82 using that Porter Cable buffer mentioned earlier, applied with the foam applicator it came with. Does a great job removing swirls and rag scratches, not that I have many. Meguiars recommends clay-barring the finish before working on it.

Finish on my '69 is basecoat / clearcoat done in 1985. I'm contemplating color sanding and buffing it over the summer. Haven't done that on this car since 1985.

I just spent 3 hours reading on that detailer forum with the black Corvette...and they say one can get about 1-2 cars per clay bar. Then there are about 10 different brands and grits of claybars too.

I just thought there was the Mothers, Wizards, and Mequires. It sounds like the clay bar market is huge.

I totally agree with the 3M suggestions. On the last NHRA Stocker I built (the Firebird B/Stick car Tim Bishop races), I had a devil of a time with the wet sand &amp; polish. The Meguiars &quot;system&quot; I had used before with Sikkens just didn't work with the BASF paint. The painter came over to my little shop and suggested I give the 3M stuff a try. Wow!! It works perfectly. For finished jobs, I still use Meguiars glaze and detailer because I can pick them up anywhere. On another note, I find it interesting that 3M owns Meguiars.

Meguiars is good stuff for going &quot;on top of the paint&quot;. 3M stuff is good for &quot;in the paint&quot;. When ever we do any black or even dark paint, 3M swirl mark remover and the blue pad are a must.
BTW the 3M compounds and the pad to use with them are corresponding colors. White cutting compound with white pad, dark gray buffing compound with the black pad and blue swirl mark remover with the blue pad.
