Mopars are cool!
took the family out tonight to a car show, and so far the hemi gtx provides the most fun out of the cars I have, going to the show (tons of room inside), at the show (tons of trunk space for lawn chairs), and country rides after the show (4spd+hemi+disk brakes). wife happy/kids happy = daddy happy as they say.

I've owned a few of those cars. The urge to put on a pair of thick, black rimmed glasses and drive around humming the music from the opening scenes of the chase from Bullitt is almost undeniable.

With some garage-mates back in 1990...(the original paint, 71 hemi sunroof Charger on the left and the Y2 Yellow/black cloth interior hemi Daytona on right. I bought that Daytona in 1989 as a resto project from Otis Chandler. Under its hood was the correct dated hemi engine for my 70. That exact engine turned out to have originally come in the very next 1970 hemi Charger built right after mine on the assembly line back on Dec 8, 1969. The block VIN is 21 cars after mine)

Some interesting Mopars I have given away over the years... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

My first Mopar when I was 16, in high school in the late 70's: 1970 Superbird 440 4 bbl, automatic. Scary car, when you'd hit passing gear the engine noise sounded just like the roaring of "Spot" the dragon that lived under the stairs in the Munsters TV show.

http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/tt77/nk15268c/mysuperbird.jpg

My first Cuda back in 1981, a 70 440+6, 4-speed:

http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/tt77/nk15268c/cuda70.jpg

My first 71 Cuda ragtop a 383 automatic. I traded a 72 Chevy Vega that my neighbors dumped and abandoned in my front yard in Denver back in '81. Before (in the junkyard where I traded the Vega for it):

http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/tt77/nk15268c/383cuda1.jpg

After:

My second 71 Cuda ragtop: one of five 4-speed, 440+6 ragtops produced. Full option car with two data tags and all original drivetrain. It was in Miami when I found it. Here's a before shot of it in the prior owner's successful camouflage attempt with 70 tail lights and a gigantic chewed-up, stainless steel dog dish with a broken dog chain wrapped around the leaf spring. (He didn't actually have a dog, but this sure kept away the nosey sightseers) <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/tt77/nk15268c/6bblcuda1.jpg

And after I finished it:

http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/tt77/nk15268c/6pkcuda2.jpg

My third Cuda, the only yellow 1971 Hemicuda ragtop produced. In as-found condition in Wisconsin back in 1986:

http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/tt77/nk15268c/cudasnow.jpg

And after I finished it and was beating the crap out of it at the Supercar Showdown in '86.

http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/tt77/nk15268c/yellowcuda2.jpg

My fourth Cuda, a 19,000 mile, survivor 71 440+6 automatic ragtop (1 of 12 produced). Auto on the column, 4.10 Dana. Quickest car I ever had. The original engine had never been apart. I just washed it, put some tires on it and and drove it for fun. Sold it to Steve Juliano in 1988 and it is now in his museum out in California.

I bought this old race car in the late 1980's because it came with an NOS 1970 Hemi engine as part of the deal. Had all sorts of weird parts with it, like a 69 grill and a Diamond Engineering magnesium cross ram. Kept the engine and sold the race car.

Of course it turned out to be Dick Landy's 1968 LO23 Hemi Dart four speed car that he campaigned as a 69. (of course I didnt know it was Dick Landy's til a decade after I sold it! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif

http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/tt77/nk15268c/LO23dart.jpg

Finally got tired of Cudas in the late 80s and went on to something with a trunk. Here's is the 71 Hemi Charger factory sunroof car. It took me 5 years of calling the owner every month to finally get him to sell it to me. 38,000 miles and original paint, along with every possible option available in 71. I sold it to Pittsburgh Steelers Linebacker Kevin Greene, back in 1994. It's now in Tim Wellborn's 71 hemi Charger collection in Alabama. http://wellbornmusclecarmuseum.com/

http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/tt77/nk15268c/71charger.jpg

1969 Hemi Daytona, one of one in Y2 Yellow with a black cloth interior. Bought it as a project car from Otis Chandler in 1989. This is the car that had a NOM 1970 hemi that turned out to be the engine from the very next 1970 hemi Charger built on the same day as my 1970 Hemi Charger R/T-SE (and which now resides under the hood of my 70)

And the infamous 1970 Hemi Charger R/T-SE, 4-speed, One of one in red, and 1 of 10 four speed cars. I found it in 1987 after it was hidden away, sitting for a decade or so here in NJ, since the mid 70's. 12,234 miles on in it when I found it.

Here are a couple shots from the moment the tarp was pulled away. I now know how Treasure Hunter Howard Carter felt when he first peered into the opening in King Tut's tomb and saw Tut's treasure. That was exactly how I felt when that plastic tarp fell away and revealed this:

Thank you!

I guess I got into these cars at the right time, back when they were reasonably cheap. (or maybe that was the wrong time, since I could have retired on what they were worth just a few years ago if I had kept a couple of them) <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

Here's one that might be worth something in another decade or two: The old Project Pit Viper, the first (and only, I think) Viper project car used by a magazine, complete with unofficial/disavowed backdoor support from the guys at Team Viper.

Here it is at Sebring. I actually held a lap record in the ASP class for a year, back in the day (til they became obsolete when SCCA allowed the Viper Coupes in with their better aerodynamics and 50 more horsepower).

http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/tt77/nk15268c/vipersebring1A.jpg

Most of you know this car as the mysterious covered workbench in my garage over the past 7 years of the Trans Am saga.

Hey Steve,
you have had some great Mopars in your time.
Question?
What would you say ran better over all,a 440 6 pack or Hemi?
Be Honest.
Here is another photo of my Challenger.
My Challenger has never left Texas until i bought it and brought it over to Canada.
Best car i have ever owned,
It was built in the LA plant and comes with a rare Broadcast sheet that were very tough to come by as the plants policy was to toss them in the trash.
Car still has original vinyl roof with one re paint/original body panels and floors never being off the car.
Car also has fantastic documents like,Dealer photos,Owner history with titles from day 1, photos of car with original paint, VHS tape of car after first paint job and tons more.
It is a 1970 R/T S.E. 440 4 Speed.
I would like to do a story on it like Steve did on his Charger one day on this forum soon.

As for E-bodies: that untouched, survivor 440+6/auto/4.10 ragtop was the quickest, stock condition car of anything I had over the years. It was scary fast.

The 71 Hemicuda ragtop was probably the slowest at 14.05. It just had no soul, that's why I sold it. Too slow and you could just tell it didn't want to go fast.

I have to recuse the 70 Hemi Charger from consideration since it has been Day 2 since Day 1. She ran a 12.77 @ 111 mph on street tires but remember, that's a car with headers. The original owner had it running 11.70's with a tunnel ram and slicks. Now that is definitely a car with it's own angry personality.

Several years ago, a buddy from Chicago had a Norm's 68 Hemi Charger. We never lined up, but just from riding in and driving both cars, my 70 440-6 Road Runner would have eaten the Hemi alive. Mine was a 3.54 geared 4-speed, and his was a 3.23 auto, so maybe not a fair comparison, but, it was what it was. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif

I had a 1970 R/T S.E. Challenger with a 440 Six pack with 4 speed trans and the Super Track Pack with 4:10 gears.
That car was very fast just Stock with no headers, i took a few buddies for a ride that had Hemi Cars and they all said that my 6 pack would have really put some of there Hemi cars in it's place.
I guess it all depends on how you set the Hemi up.
Here is a photo of that Six Pack car i sold in March 2009.
It sure was super fast.

The car is an original 383 "H" code car 3.23 posi auto, console PS,PB,AIR,Defogger, road wheels, red line tires. I have the original window sticker, certi-card, and owners manual. The car is supposed to be Gold and one day I will repaint it the original color. The car has 92K miles on the clock and seem to be original. I put a mild build 440 in it the original 383 was gone when I got it. I kept the 383 that came with it. Original body panels, floors, trunk...Arkansas car. I tracked the original owner down and spoke to the lady...she was 89 years old when I spoke to her. Very cool to speak to her.

Not only didn't hurt but it is the fastest stock car I have ever owned. When it was 35 years old it turned a 12.6 1/4 mile with just the cutouts opened. It is still capable of that today. A set of slicks will get it in the 12 teens. Don't know of any other car off the showroom floor in the day that could do that.

Hate to be a party pooper, but in the day the street hemi had the mystique but never ran. The 440 6 packs always blew their doors in and any big block solid lifter Chevy (L78 396 or 427) left their owners crying. The only Hemi worth owning was the race Hemi which was available in both 65 Dodge and Plymouths and could be ordered just like the Max Wedge earlier. Right off the showroom floor. NHRA Hall of Famer, Kenny Montgomery, lives locally to me. He still owns his 1965 Race Hemi Belvedere that he bought new. It still turns a 9.15 @ 148 MPH,with slicks and headers. Show me a GM or a Ford that can do that!

You got a great one there. The two cars I refer to were a 68 GTX and a 69 Roadrunner. They just did not run for all they were cracked up to be. I beat both of them with my 66 L78 Chevelle SS,12.82 with slicks, heaaders and 4.88 gears. A previous owner of my 63 Max Wedge ran a 12.6 @ 113 mph. Road and Track in the day recorded a 12.0 @ 117 mph. I love my Chevy big blocks but vintage Mopars rock!

have to leave Kenny's SS/B car out of that mix Rob. That is a full blown race car, NOTHING like anything you could buy in the showroom. And yes the six-pack cars ran well but I don't remember many if any beating a good running L78 camaro, nova or chevelle where I lived on most occasions.

Kenny bought both his belvedere and Cuda with race henis ordered from the dealer. Over the years I am sure they have been massaged, but you could order one at the dealer, same as the max wedge in 62, 63, and 64. They were race cars also. That is what made these cars unique. Anyone could order one at any Dodge or Plymouth dealer. No true race car was available from any GM or Ford dealer for the general public, unless you want to include the Z/28 which was ready to race. The Trans Am was not available at the dealer with the 303 in it. You are right about the six packs and street hemis in the day. I was never beaten by one of the two I mentioned either on the street or at the Grove in my L78 Chevelle.

YES, both race cars from the factory. BUT if you saw a SS/AH cuda or dart or Kenny Montgomery's car you would not recognize them as you have 40 years ago. Yes, factory race cars like the Zl-1 camaro but nothing like the day you brought it home. Go to Cecil Couny this weekend to the NHRA DIV-1 race and give us a report on Monday what the Hemi cars or any other "factory" racecars look today compared to new. Check out the SS/C, 4 speed AMX with the dual quads that runs in the 9 teens. Aris Asdorian from Bethlehem, pa. Not like the showroom in these days.

----If I can throw a bit of fuel on the fire, a "street stock" Hemi wasnt generally that fast a ride. I whipped more than a few of them, and have owned more than a few of them. That part was relatively easy as weight was the difference. The guys that dug into them a bit (not just posers with an idle and an emblem) found that they needed about two more points of compression and a bit wilder cam. Any sort of good internals didnt hurt either. That plus good exhaust and a gear and any hemi around Akron Ohio would spank just about anybody who was willing to come out to play. Just the same as many here, I know as I was there!!! I used to get drilled on a regular basis when the serious Hemi guys came out as my 66 427/425 Vette only had a 3:70. No matter how much tuning we did we would not get the job done when they showed up unless they broke. I couldnt afford much more. All I had was welded on, spin off plumbing pipe dumps like most every one else. It was all still more fun than I can even explain weather I won or lost. Where I was it wasnt all about the benjamins (although that helped) but the bragging rights.......Bill S

Exactly Bill. That is what I meant if I did not state it correctly. A stock street hemi needed help to match it's image. The two cars I referred to in the day were bone stock and they just did not run. They were 13.4 times at best. I still stand by my assertion that Mopar was the only brand that offered a real race motor ordered from the dealer whether it was a hemi or a max wedge. I will admit I never saw one on the street in the day. They really were not for daily driving and Mopar made that very clear. A modified street hemi with cam, headers and headwork would beat me more often then not, but my L78 motor was bone stock with the addition of tires and headers, and neither car touched me. Remember, the L78 in the Chevelle was the exact same motor that was in the 1965 396 Corvette. Chevy did not want to show up the Corvette so they "downrated" the same motor in the Chevelle. It wwas really 425hp or better not 375. You are also completely spot on, it was all bragging rights, money never entered into it in my circles. In 1966 it was all I could do to pay my car payment and insurance.

I did not throw in the ZL1 because that is comparing apples and oranges. Only 69 ZL1 cars were built, Stock out of the box they were a low 13's car. With tuning, tires and headers they turned mid 11's. At $7200.00 they were out of reach for just about anyone but the rich or sponsored teams, which in fact bought 20 of them. As a matter of fact 12 of the 69 cars actually had the motors removed and the motors were sold. As far as I remember, Mopar was the only car capapble of 12's off the showroom floor with no modifications. Everything that ran against them were built just for that reason. The Ford thunderbolt was not street legal and was not even built by Ford, the Pontiac SD's were not street legal and not available to the genral public. Chevy did not have a competitive platform in the day.(62,63,64,65)All these cars are great stuff and make the 60's a very special time. Enjoy.

as far as mopars being cool, here is a car I have had for a while. its orignally curious yellow, white interior and came with white billboards (actually rare, most were black). what gets better is it came with the rare flying saucer hubcaps, the wider wheels and dual white stripe F 70 14s (the autoshow pictures I see now from 71 had the same dual stripe tires on alot of the cars). I got it from the original owner. 340 4 spd and NO options other than 'fast and light'.

Being stored in a barn for about 37 years it's a little rough round the edges but overall in great shape. It's a rare Red on Red factory manual floor shift 3 speed stick car that's never been cut up or modified. Fully documented in the Darell Davis book, has ALL of the rare original Max Wedge parts intact and runs and drives like an beast! It's now been mechanically redone and the body is pretty much all original with a lot of "patina".

I'm waiting to hear back from Chry Hist for the IBM card. It is an original 3.91 rear end car but has a 3.23 in it now. I have the 3.91 to put back into it. Mileage is 25K. Only thing not original in the interior are the front bucket seat covers and the headliner. The underside is just, well, all original except for a new correct repro Max Wedge exhaust system. I suspect the car was street raced but no signs of any modifications or abuse that most Max Wedge cars were subjected to.

Anyone who thought about buying this and didn't...Thanks, you missed a fantastic piece of automotive history.

Here's my 69 GTX. Nothing crazy, 440 Super Commando, Hemi 4 speed, 3.54 Dana rear. F5 green, green interior, green vinyl top. Ordered without PS or PB, no A/C. It had the Magnum 500s on it when I bought it in 2007 but I also liked the steel wheel look so I switched a little while after buying it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2015/02/full-2779-21334-img_0406.jpg

I dig them all, but I love that purple Demon!
That had to be a fast car with that rear gear ratio.

I have a real soft spot for that Demon, bought it from a guy I knew and thought I'd keep it forever. Then when my other buddy told me about the Satellite Sebring Plus that was so similar to my first cat I had to let it go to fund the SSP.
It went back to the guy I bought it from.

Also forgot about this bad boy! 13 R/T, hope to get a 2015 or 16 ScatPack Shaker car next year.

I sold my 69 GTX about 6 months to get this 1970 Roadrunner. FE5 red with brown bench seat interior. Airgrabber, 4 speed, numbers matching 383 and transmission. Car hasn't run in over 10 years. I did some assembly over the last 6 months and it's almost ready to run. Looking foward to getting it on the road.
