View Full Version : smart guy that I am...9800 mile 69 Camaro

Maybe 2 months ago I finally bought this 69 Camaro from a lady in New York. Lemans blue with white vinyl top, white std interior. As a girl she had watched the old lady down the street drive it sparingly and loved the car. Years later the lady died and she bought it at the estate sale. It is a 6 cylinder, power steering, column auto, radio delete car. The interior is as nice as I've ever seen. Carpet looks new. Steering wheel looks new...So for a couple months I have been looking forward to it's arrival.

Imagine my surprise when it unloads with a white painted roof and is Azure Turquoise...maybe I should have asked ? Maybe I should have asked for a pic of the trim tag ? Sometimes I just don't pay attention...Still looks Lemans blue to me.

....interesting that the trim around the painted roof does not have the center of it blacked out like I have always seen on vinyl top cars.

Wow, thats fantastic! That 69 Camaro looks like a new car. I like the looks of the Sport Coupe. The indoor photos do look like Azure Turquoise, the outdoor photo look like LeMans Blue.

Nice Charley
Also a great learning tool too. Could you get me a close in shot of the screws on the fire wall wire gutter ? Those are correct and not often done correctly on many restored cars.
Also a close in shot of the horn bolts, note, they do not appear to be zinc plated like the ones that come in your AMK bolt kits... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif
Thanks and have fun with her. This is one that would be great for Vintage Cert ?

The cardboard that tapes to the bottom of the dash to block off the speaker grill has fallen...You can also see on the trunk lid where the painter smeared the paint with his fingers around the emblem holes.

So I have another 69 low mile car that is also Azure Turquoise. Took em outside and they are definitely different colors. Inside they look closer. The RS was a LA built car while the plain Jane is a Norwood car. Amazing color difference.

Beautiful pair! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/naughty.gif

We have a local guy out here who has 69 Camaro with a six cylinder, manual three speed on the tree, also in Azure TurquoIse. It is one of the highest quality restorations I've ever seen. Must have spent a fortune on it. I think it was a family heirloom.

Those "average" non high performance cars from the era are so neat to see. And so rare because they weren't seen as worth saving by the majority of the population.

As to the color difference, it would not surprise me that the 2 plants had 2 different paint suppliers. Also, the cars were being painted by manual application. It is amazing what the difference in fan pattern and humidity will do to color.

Currently, we have a lot of painted parts show up ready to install for the F-150. Painted offsite and having to match our plant as well as Dearborn (different paint supplier there). Color harmony......wonderful meetings!!!!

BTW, sweet grocery getter!!!

Congrats on a beautiful car. Not that many around in that paint combo. According to CRG only 2.4% where two tone color, divide that up on the total 6 combos and it would be roughly 1000 cars made in 55 50. Not many still around of those.

Actually, congrats on your latest - but Azure Turquoise is my favorite 69 color and I'm really jealous.... If you ever want to sell - yada, yada, yada....

Cool cars Charley. Noticed your RS car does not have the Camaro emblem on the trunk lid. Wonder if it was resprayed at some point.

Charley Lillard

The RS is just a odd car. It was Vintage judged and they all agreed it was orig. paint. Odd trunk sticker and bolts also. Something not normal apparently happened on the assembly line that day.

There is a research topic over at CRG about the holes in the trunk lid. For the emblem they were stamped out and all other holes were drilled on the line.
http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=3752.0

This one is dated before the Firebirds came to Norwood so there shouldn't be a mixup. The trunklid bracing on 69 Camaros had the holes for mounting the Trans Am wing from around 01A or maybe earlier. Yours don't have that. It could be a replacement lid you have there.

Jan, possibly you're confused but this 69 Rally Sport is LOS built car. That plant started building Firebirds in 1968. This car is an 11B built car so it should not have the extra holes to accommodate the TA spoiler. We found this car to be original in both body panel and paint(all sheet metal date codes matched the build period). Again this is an 11B LOS built car therefore your assertion that the trunk lid is replace is incorrect. A team of four judges spent over three hours on this car and it’s as real and unrestored as they get.

Hey Charlie I am wondering about the pin stripping. I could see the pin stripping under the one repaint on my car. Was this an option or were the pin stripes on all Camaros. For some reason very few repainted cars I have seen have the pin stripes.

The D96 striping accent was included in 1969 with both the Z22 & Z21 option, but was not available on Z28's or Z27(SS)because those options had other striping included. To make it more confusing it was included with the Z11 (indy pace cars which were rs/ss equipped).

If your car is not a Z28 or Z27 equipped then it could be ordered under RPO D96. I may be easier to tell me how your car is equipped if my explanation was confusing.

My first '69 Camaro was Azure Turquoise with Black vinyl top, hockey stick stripe, and black standard int. w/ console, 327 glide wiyh A/C. Cragar SS and Road Huggers. I was a junior in high school (private school and I was the ONLY car guy). It still makes me wonder why that color was NOT more popular---went GREAT with White, Black, or solid color. I remember seeing one with a White top and B/W Houndstooth---a definite looker. GREAY find Charley---I like the wheel/tire combo., but I say NO to the LS swap. Rare doesn't always mean desirable, but that car is an honest original and PLEASE leave it that way.
Again, CONGRATS.

One thing I forgot to tell you guys about my Azure '69. I was one of a few guys in my class that had their own cars (most drove their parents---you know the sons of doctors and lawyers; my father sold new Oldsmobiles) and had a job to make the payments. I used to walk to and from school and passed by the '69 everyday. Finally, a "For Sale" sign appeared and I left a deposit immediately on the way home from school. I owned it within that week and was driving on the weekend. I'll never forget---$47.77 a month as a junior in high school! Thanks to mom for co-signing!!!!!!!!
