I just got a 68 camaro this past weekend it is a clean street car with 60,000 miles but it is a standard coupe with a 392 small block stroker and dart heads. I wanted the car to play around with and for the money I figured I wasn't getting anything special. But like any muscle car head I started pulling numbers and when I got to the rear I about pooped my pants. I pulled the cover and it still has the original ring and pinion in it and inside was really clean. The only thing that I noticed was the pinion seal is starting to seep a little oil and someone put a low rent chrome cover on it. but I ran every # I could find and it is spot on. I just gave all the #'s to a buddy of mine who is a camaro junkie and he is double checking everything for me. Anyways I was wondering what this thing is worth I would like it to go to someone that has a copo and not an original rear, Instead of my weekend street beater and occasional cruise night special. Who knows maybe I can get enough out of it to get a new 12 bolt and my car cleaned up a little more. I will post the #'s later tonight or tomorrow and I can get pics up this weekend

Ok the rear is in the car of course so I cant get real good pics, but I will try this wknd. For now here are the numbers: axle tube, B E 0513g1 then of course the E underneath for eaton. The ring gear number: 1 gm 39162261041569 and the number on the pinion gear: 693916228 41gm. like I said everything is in really good shape inside and it doesn't look like it was ever torn down. If this isn't a copo rear don't beat me up too bad I am a newbie with these cars. and I would also like to know what numbers if any I could check on my trans it is a m21 and I think it is a close ratio( it feels like the close ratio in my uncles gto fast shifting through third then fourth seems alot higher) the reason I asked is the guy I got the car from said the previous owner told him the guy he got it from put the rear and tranny in it from an old camaro that was going to be junked. Who knows I may have a tranny too! oh yea what is this thing really worth, not what people are asking and not getting, but real world money?

the trans numbers are on the drivers side on the main case, it should start with a P then the year, month and day, and it will end in an A, B, or C. there should be a partial vin there as well. good luck!

I pulled the #'s on my tranny, the tailshaft # is 3857584. there is a little metal tag on the bottom of the trans that has 3950396 on it and there is a number cast in the pass side of the case that is 3925680. on the pass side of the tranny is a stamped # p9s06and I think the last letter is A but I'm not sure cant really see in there too well with the headers and 3" exhaust

I took pics of the numbers on the axle tube but I can't seem to get them posted up on here If someone could help me out with that it would be wonderful, I am kind of dumb when it comes to this computer, Hey, I dig ditches for a living, what do you expect <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/laugh.gif

The numbers that you posted, 3916226-3916228, are correct for a COPO 4.10 ring & pinion and the 5-69 dating matches the BE0513G1 axle code.

If you want to email the pictures to me, I will size them and post them for you tonight.

If you have a clear picture showing the gears/plates inside of the posi unit I can probably tell you if it has the correct 3916234 carrier too.

Good find.

With good original internals and a minimal amount of pitting on the housing I would put the value around 10k. However.... that is just me.

the internals seem fine I'm driving the car now (actually just come back from a little ride and put it away) and there aren't any noises coming from it. Also when I had the cover off everything looks good on the inside, and there doesnt seem to be alot of pitting on the housing but the guy painted everything under the car with a brush and it is pretty thick. If that is the value of the rear it will be up for sale and my car will be going to the paint shop and getting a big block!

I would agree with Matt if it has the correct carrier. A complete undamaged core from that time frame should be worth ~ $10K in my opinion.

I will note that, from the pictures, the tubes "appear" to have some pitting.

If you choose to strip the paint from the housing, do it chemically to maintain the original metal finishes and surface condition. Sanding marks will detract from the value more than rust and or pitting in my opinion.

Hope this helps.

I'd give you 10k for the rear if it is all original internals. pm or email if interested in selling. [email protected]

I believe that is Doug Perry's BE rear -

COPO

Is this BE rear the real deal? The ring gear is dated two months after the build date of the rear and the ring gear part number is not a COPO part #.

Hello 1goug76. You're probably going to get a ton of offers, but I'll at least throw my hat into the ring. I bought a 69 camaro 5 years ago, thinking it was just a RS car. Turns out its a COPO RS car. Anyway, I've built it to be as nice as I could afford, but on a limited budget. The rear-end I bought is a new moser 12-bolt unit with 3:42 gears. It has drum brakes on it, an eaton posi unit, and has about 1,000 miles on it. Your BE coded rear-end would go great under my copo. Want to swap?

I have what I believe to be a BE rear as well. The person I purchased it from had a massive collection on period correct big block and other misc. Chevy muscle car parts. His collection was amazing - even had a brand new L89 never fired engine.

Regardless, when I purchased the rear he told me he purchased it in Englishtown about 10-12 years prior and the guy had pulled it from a Nova and had no clue what it was other than a 12 bolt w. 5:13 gears. I had no reason not to believe his story. All the internals are gone - I will attach pictures of the stampings on the rear. I have gotten mixed reviews on it from the people that have looked at the pics in the past. I am open to further opinions on it.
